- A remote Mauritian island is being quietly transformed into a military hub for India's navy. That’s what we found using satellite pictures, shipping data, financial documents, and images from a barely accessible island about 1100 km north of Mauritius. The Island of Secrets also shows how the construction project on Agaléga has the potential to uproot the lives of its 300 residents in order to make way for a military facility. Residents worry that what happened on the Mauritian island of Diego Garcia in the 1960s will happen to them. The Mauritian government responded to this film by restating its position that there is “no agreement” with India to set up a military a base in Agaléga. It said that construction work on the island is designed to improve “inadequate infrastructure facilities”. The government also stated that it has no intention of displacing people living on the island. India’s Ministry of Defence and Ministry of External Affairs did not respond to our request for comment.

If this can pose as mutually advantageous for both India and Mauritius -let it be. It is seen as a defense in intent and who do not need this initiative for these trying uncertain times. It is still Mauritius which reigns on the rights of that island, that when the report discloses both India and Mauritius are keeping a secret re the construction of military bases and similar installation on said island, there is no disparity whatsoever to see therein. Mauritius can depend on whatever material advantage/s that India can extend, also the protection of her economic zones - the amity and concession that exist with India here is not a deal-breaker. When I got back home, I met a lot of workers from Qatar who told me some funny stuffs about mistreatment. Maybe I misheard. Maybe Al Jazeera should investigate those claims with the same amount of journalistic integrity as this one. I am sure it would be most interesting.

As a mauritian, this was kept secret from us by our govt and were lied to that no military base is actually being constructed there. India is a peaceful country. These are goodwill infrastructure developments to help a neighbor. There is a large Indian diaspora as well. Their well being is also factored in the project and the neighborhood.

Well, as I watch this very good researched documentary. All I can say is, first, if India 🇮🇳 will put or rotate Indian troops in that Agalaga island, then, it will become a military based. Now, with or without Indian troops, the project will have a dual purposed for both countries of Mauritius 🇲🇺 and India 🇮🇳. The airport development which is I see as a positive for at least for Indian 🇮🇳 and Mauritius 🇲🇺 troops to used the runway, ports, and land for military exercise, which is beneficial for both country. Most especially, the coast guard and naval forces.
Secondly, I am not worried for these development because in part, India is a regional power and watching their own backyard (The Indian Ocean) from the Chinese intruder. China 🇨🇳 intrudes and invade exclusive economic zones of sovereign countries like Vietnam 🇻🇳, Indonesia 🇮🇩, Philippines 🇵🇭, and even as far as Chile 🇨🇱, Ecuador 🇪🇨, Peru 🇵🇪, and Argentina 🇦🇷 to fish and haul illegally and destroy the natural resources of these countries for their own greedy appetites and to support their own 1.8 billion population. The world always has an outcry whenever any nation other than USA / NATO does it..!
