Mr. Bojangles always brings tears to my eyes when I hear the part of the "dog up and died; up and died. After 20 years, he still grieved." Sort of an "Old Yeller" moment. Beautiful song.

I love the nitty Gritty Dirt band and I meet John in 1969. John was my girl friend uncle, could I get any luckier. I was over visiting my girlfriend Patty and John came into the living room and ask if we would like to go see Carol King, I had a big smile and as when do we leave and he said now. So we got in there car and I believe the show was in Beverly Hills. We parked walked up to the door John waslked over to some one and we were escorted down to within four rows of the piano. That was one of the best days of my life. John is a classical banjo player and good doesn't come close. Thank you for the videos the bring back a lot of memories.

When I was a teen my parents bought me a radio that received AM, FM, TV and various short wave channels. I was listening one day and heard a channel from Australia quite clearly (I was in New York) and the announcer was fascinated by the name Nitty Gritty Dirt Band. After saying it about six times or so he played Mr. Bojangles. It must have been the first time he heard it. Afterwards he said " Wow, that was a really nice tune!"

I knew a man, Bojangles and he danced for you
    In worn out shoes
Silver hair, a ragged shirt and baggy pants
    The old soft shoe
    He jumped so high
    He jumped so high
    Then he'd lightly touch down
I met him in a cell in New Orleans, I was
    Down and out
He looked to me to be the eyes of age
    As he spoke right out
    He talked of life
    He talked of life
He laughed, clicked his heels and stepped
He said his name, Bojangles and he danced a lick
    Across the cell
He grabbed his pants, a better stance
    Oh, he jumped so high
    Then he clicked his heels
    He let go a laugh
    He let go a laugh
Pushed back his clothes all around
    Mr. Bojangles
    Mr. Bojangles
    Mr. Bojangles
    Dance
He danced for those in minstrel shows and county fairs
    Throughout the south
He spoke with tears of fifteen years how his dog and him
    Traveled about
    The dog up and died
    He up and died
After twenty years he still grieves
He said I dance now at every chance in honky tonks
    For drinks and tips
But most the time I spend behind these county bars
He said I drinks a bit
    He shook his head
And as he shook his head
I heard someone ask him please
    Please
    Mr. Bojangles
    Mr. Bojangles
    Mr. Bojangles
    Dance

Very nice, John took my girlfriend "Pattie" & I to see Carol King play on the strip in Hollywood in the early 70's so I've always liked the band. There was a huge line all the way around the building to get in but we walked right in as sat about 20 feet from her and her piano, no one else that was playing with her. It's one of the favorite memories of those days. Thanks, If you could find some video of the 60 & 70's that would be great. They also played in "Paint Your Wagon."

I'll tell you what. I used to be in and out of county jails and university's and I enjoy the song because, although I know longer drink, I know what Mr Bojangles is going through I've lived in cells and it's no fun.

Marty Campos actually, “county bars” is an error if it is a cell in New Orleans. Louisiana doesn’t have counties. It has parishes. Jerry Jeff shoulda known that.
