    I’ve put radishes and turnips straight in the ground and then started Pak Choi, Lettuce, Chinese Cabbage and Chinese Broccoli to plant out in September once I have some more space. I hadn’t thought of Christmas Potatoes, thanks for the idea!

    I didn't want this video to end. You are really coming into your own now Jim. The video editing is coming along leaps and bounds but it is really just how much more comfortable you appear on camera these days.
    I watch your channel grow with interest because you derserve it my good man.
    The content is great, you are informative and speak from experience and that added to your dry sense of humour at times, for me it's a good time watching your videos.
    Didn't want this one to end, could have listened to you chatting away for another hour.
    Keep up the great work Jim. 4,110 subscribers - let's hit that 5K goal by end of summer September 21st!

      It's kind comments like yours that keep me motivated to carry on making these videos. It's not easy at times especially when life is so busy. Tending to the allotment, working my day job, having a family, and then allocating time to film videos and edit those videos too, I don't know how I find the time 😂
      Your comment put a smile on my face and I really appreciate it, thank you! I will keep on going.

    That potato unboxing interlude had me in tears! You might wish to add a few more potatoes in each bag for next season :) Make sure to add some brown material to the mix, at least 20% mulch. Potatoes like really fluffy conditions. They also like mulch toping once they sprout. If the soil gets compacted from repeated rain, your potatoes will struggle to expand, the growth will be diverted to the leaves, and you will get bushy and potentially diseased leaves. A carbon rich environment (as opposed to nitrogen-dominant) that is loose and retains moisture is ideal. Potatoes also really like to be watered regularly which encourages soil movement and allows potatoes to fill up with water and grow. Hope you found something useful here!

    Here in NE Spain we plant whole garlic heads for the shoots. They grow like a bunch of Spring onions through late autumn and winter and are fantastic in scrambled eggs with prawns or salmon. Later in September we plant the individual garlic cloves to produce heads of garlic in late Spring.

  • @spickandspanhomeorganising2836

    Just got my first allotment yesterday so lots to learn but this was great thank you! When you say over winter does this mean not in the ground outside? Eg in a greenhouse?!

    First year growing purple sprouting broccoli. I have no luck with cabbages, cauliflower. It's likely a combination of wrong type and wrong planting time.
    I have to move in early spring so anything growing gets eaten, thrown out of given away.

    Great suggestions Jim, I’ll give some things a try but I had such a bad experience last winter with a rat 🐀 that ate all my winter veg in the poly. Plus no matter how much fleece is used things froze in the minus 14c extremes. Have a marvellous and hopefully sunny week, Ali 🥵🌞🇨🇦

    • @downtoearthwithjim
      @downtoearthwithjim  Před měsícem +1

      Oh no! I've had the same problem with rats, they seem to be worse lately.. even digging up potatoes now. I lost some brassicas in previous winters in hard freezes but I've noticed its the plants that are smaller that don't make it. You have a great week too! I think we are expecting a heatwave late weekend/early next week. Finally things are growing now it's warmed up!

    my winter crops will be split between the polytunnel and the deep beds. that should extend my winter - spring season. i used to sow august but now it's july. as you said, using the light levels to my advantage................brian

    • @downtoearthwithjim
      @downtoearthwithjim  Před měsícem +1

      I must admit the light levels get very low on my plot in winter with the trees shading my plot. So it's a challenge for me to grow in the poly in the winter sometimes

      @@sandrawoodall6545 hi Sandra. Yes you can plant cauliflower in your buckets and overwinter them in the greenhouse. That's what I'm doing with the variety 'all year round'. What varieties of potato could i sow in August? Are they called Christmas Potatoes? Never heard of doing this, but would love to try it!

    • @downtoearthwithjim
      @downtoearthwithjim  Před měsícem

      They're often sold in garden centres around this time, and are usually varieties like Desiree, Charlotte, and I think I've seen Maris peer or Maris piper as well. I tried Desiree and Charlotte last year and they grew really well initially.. the blight destroyed them September/ October though so I ended up with pretty much nothing. It's okay if you don't have issues with blight though
