  • In this video, I walk you through a shortened version of a protocol of chemical transformation - commonly known as "heat shock". This protocol starts with the preparation of chemically competent cells, before completing the actual transformation.
    Please note that the very short treatment in CaCl2 in this procedure will yield enough cells capable of transformation to demonstrate the concept in a teaching lab, but will not yield transformation efficiency that is sufficient for research purposes.

      They're not necessary for this lab - there's nothing here that's dangerous to you, and you're not really a "danger" to the bacteria in your tubes. In fact, at the end, when you are using a flame, you really shouldn't be wearing gloves - you don't want the silicone on your hands to be catching on fire if you get too close to the flame by accident.
