An infection caused by a plasmodium parasite transmitted by the bite of infected mosquitoes.
Malaria mostly spreads to people through the bites of some infected female Anopheles mosquitoes.
Blood transfusion and contaminated needles may also transmit malaria.
Left untreated, P. falciparum malaria can progress to severe illness and death within 24 hours.
Symptoms are chills, fever and sweating, usually occurring a few weeks after being bitten.
Pain areas: in the abdomen or muscles
Whole body: chills, fatigue, fever, night sweats, shivering, or sweating
Gastrointestinal: diarrhoea, nausea, or vomiting
Also common: fast heart rate, headache, mental confusion, or pallor
