Imagine if not only did we use the bamboo for food and materials, but we also used all of the waste material for making like, paper or something (maybe write books about bamboo on the bamboo paper lol)
I've had an expanding grove of yellow striped now for around thirty years. I WILL be eating homegrown bamboo shoots from now on. Thanks!
Oh man, here in Indonesia perhaps even in Asia, we generally have eaten bamboo shoots for thousands of years. 😊
Can you eat the shoots of any type of bamboo?😊
@@kathynix6552 too bad no answer from the expert
@@kathynix6552 Most are edible (if treated properly) but only a few handful species are usually harvested for food (i think around 10% species from the total). And not all that is edible are delicious, some are really bitter or off tasting?
Fresh bamboo is delicious
a happy man living a happy life. that's pretty "bamboo" good.
4:40 ok. you can deny it no longer now. Chanting your Bamboo magic. you can't hide that your a Bamboo WIZARD🧙♂🧙♂🤣🤣
I deleted my first comment in a different video, "evasive species!" A very interesting plant and if cared for, find to add to the homestead; that is what I've learned.
Him saying the names of the different types of bamboo shoots made me laugh and think of the spells used on Harry Potter! :D
Mr. Luck, you’ve helped me so much in this video. I have a fair sized grove, and am writing at shoot removal time. I wasn’t sure if and how they could be eaten, and you explained everything I needed in this one short video. Thank you so much!
It is a big source in Asian countries ! We can makw so many delicious dishes out of bamboo shoots: fresh or dry !
Thanks as ever Darrell! You are a champ!
Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge!
Great information !!
AWESOMENESS!!❤
thanks sir, always watch your educational videos
So stoked. I finally got my hardcopy of book of bamboo. Copies slowly trickling out. Be patient
Seems like we are all taking this journey together
Really good videos.
I would love to come cut some out. I’m growing some in my yard and it takes forever to grow.
Que super bambú me encanta
I have a black bamboo seed I'd like to plant at some point.
Please enable 'Save to playlists' for this video. Thanks.
He cuts off and throws away the best part , salt water brine and it’s so tender
How long do you soak it? Do you soak it at room temperature or in the fridge or...? How much salt for how much water? Do you save every bit of what he discards, all the way down to the base part with the purplish dots? And then do you just proceed to boil it the same as what the man in this video says he does with the part he saves?
if you have a lot of bamboo you can soak it in salt water. if you have just for a day , the best way is boiled it until it not bitter any more, then you can cook what so ever you what to. I will boiled at less 3-4 time and depended on what kind of bamboo.@@patrickcleburneuczjsxpmp9558
now I know how the bamboo shoots could be harvested and prepared to be eaten
(it is really interresting even despite the fact, that bamboo doesn't grow where I live)
From where i am from. any bamboo verity will either Dry out and die or freeze to death by winter
bamboo shoots are one of my favorite sushi ingredients
Never tried that I bet it would be good!
You put bamboo shoot on top of a clump of rice?
My parents are Asian and they eat bamboo. When they have fresh shoots they boil first as well but only one time. Boiling multiple times is not necessary and a waste of water
what type of bamboo is it
hey, how do you dry them?
in Asian countries , tropical climate, lots of rain and humidity , bambooshoots are a lot bigger !
Depends on the species. There are much larger species (up to about 7" in diameter) that grow in the southeastern US, also from Asia, as are the smaller species in this video.
WOW Who knew 😮
Very interesting. Thank you. For the dried shoots and once rehydrated, do they need to be boiled like the fresh ones? Also could they be eaten like crisps?
The shoots are boiled before they are dried. They might be OK to eat dried if they have some seasoning on them before drying. I just tried one as is - a bit bland tasting.
@@darrellluck7230 thanks for the reply! I thought maybe something like a chip
He looks like Grampa Smurf!
How do you dry the shoots? Awesome info, thanks…
Remove the water
Use a dehydrator or it may be possible to dehydrate via the sun as well.
@@mistersmith8962 incredible.
@@mistersmith8962hehehe, well there ya go.
All bamboo shoots is edible,i also eat bigger shoot its delicious.
How does it escape the enclosure (or, perhaps more appropriately, how does it spread)?
3:50
@@daniildanzig2842 how deep do those runners go in the attempt to spread and propagate?
@@Christ_on_the_River sorry, your guess is as good as mine. But I am sure professor Google can assist you with this question.
If you do the running type planting it surrounded by concrete works, they sell plastic barriers but it seems they escape over time. Try a clumping variety of bamboo if you don't want to deal with managing it. Watch this video to learn all about growing bamboo czcams.com/video/C5Ke83_QKtk/video.html
I have yellow groove the roots typically are 6 inches deep. I dig a shall trench with a single hand shovel and when I find one I cut and rip it out. Not hard if you are in OK shape. Only needs to be done once a year. Plus if you miss any shoots will point them out.
So are all types of Bamboo (shoots) edible?
yes
I didnt quiet get the variaty of bamboo anyone has the latin name on it? thanks
I only have dandelions for food and burdock roots. What Zone are you in? I am 4B
We are zone 7A
I recommend you grow Jerusalem artichokes. They'll make a lot of calories in your zone. Make sure to cook them a long time or ferment them.
Are they all edible?
Yes any variety of bamboo is, just need to harvest in spring when they shoot and the size Darrell showed
can you eat varieties of bamboo shoots?
Yes I guess, 3:32
Yes you can eat any variety of bamboo, some are just taste better than others!
So you can eat any type of bamboo like this?
Yes.
no there are some that are not edible!
