In this video I react to the stunning transformation of Battersea Power Station into a luxury shopping mall. This place is incredible! Looking at it now, I can't believe that not that long ago it was just an old power station but now the whole area is beautiful. The architecture of this iconic London landmark is such a contrast to the more modern buildings surrounding it.
I've always loved it when old industrial buildings are repurposed into new spaces, and I'm in awe of the transformation that this entire area has undergone. From high-end fashion boutiques to gourmet restaurants, Battersea Power Station has been completely reimagined as a world-class shopping destination. While I'm not a huge shopper myself, I absolutely appreciate beautiful spaces and history, and Battersea Power Station doesn't disappoint.
When I'm in London I'd definitely like to tour Battersea Power Station Mall. I may not be into luxury shopping, but I love old buildings, and lift 109 may be the best view in London.
Thanks for watching. If you enjoyed this reaction please give this video a thumbs up, share your thoughts in the comments and click the subscribe button to follow my journey to learn about my British and Irish ancestry.

£9bn (i.e. GB POUNDS) is about 11.5bn USD, and is the cost to clean up, renovate and redevelop the entire 45-ish acre site. (1.8m sq.ft.)

My Grandfather was the Head supervisor when it was an actual power station, his job was so important he wasn't able to enlist in the army during WWII, he was very conflicted about this as he felt he was letting the country down, however, it was more important thay he kept the power on in London. I've visited since its renovation and it is impressive. 👍🏻

I visited this place yesterday with my parents. My dad uses a mobility scooter and had no issues with access to the shops or the lift 109. There is a separate lift for people with limited mobility which needs to be prebooked (free of charge). This lift bypasses the steps to the main elevator so that disabled customers can also access the attraction. The view from the top of the chimney was stunning, and well worth the £15 fee. As a side note, the whole site is very clean and well laid out. Facilities for disabled customers are plentiful and accessible. I would definitely revisit.

London's power stations (including Battersea) were powered by Northumberland and Durham coal, taken down the North Sea by squat little collier ships, which had folding funnels so they could pass under the London bridges. My father worked on these ships for a while, after he'd finished crossing and re-crossing the Atlantic for five years during the war

Battersea Power station stood abandoned for decades while they tried to figure out what to do with it. At one point it was going to be a theme park. The big problem being you would be allowed to put extra windows into the external walls When works finally got started they were halted because it had been determined that the chimneys needed to be rebuilt, but the local authority were concerned if the developer actually had the money to do the works. They were concerned that the developer would take them down then go bankrupt and they would never be rebuilt. The American Embassy has also moved into this area. I wonder how many of the apartments that overlook the American Embassy are actually owned by foreign countries hoping to spy on the embassy.

It used to be coal fired, and provided electricity for London. The great hall in the middle contained 4 massive ge-sets. The 4 big chimneys were the smokestacks, as in US terminolgy, were the ends of of the flues for the massive boilers to make steam to turn the turbines to make the gensets go round. A lesser known fact is it's also where, under armed guard, where all the used and knackered bank notes were destroyed in the furnaces! Not anymore, though. The power for the underground railway network had it's own power system, seperate to the national grid. Look it up. Firstly, I grew up in Battersea, so the Power Station was a part of my life for many years, even though I never actually went inside until December 2022 when I went up in the lift! It closed as a power station when I was in my last year at school, so watched with interest all the different proposals for its use over the years. I always hoped they'd go for the theme park option, but sadly that wasn't to be!

The old power station is an icon of London - it's as famous in London as something like the Brooklyn Bridge is in New York, and is a historically listed building. One of the world's largest brick buildings. If you know your classic rock you'll recognise the building from the cover of Pink Floyd's album "Animals". Building started in 1929, and it was a working power station until the 1980s.

And it has been standing empty since then (more than 3 decades) while various schemes to develop it have come and gone. Part of the reason those schemes failed was the huge cost of making the space safe for visitors, it's not like it was just a big empty box, there was all the old industrial remains that had to be removed or made safe and then the side effects of being empty for 3 decades in a run down part of the city (both human and animal contamination). I actually hadn't realised they had finally done something with it - I will have to go and take a look at some point.

In the UK a lot of places don't have a Starbucks. A few years ago, they started pulling out of town centres, so some places that used to have a Starbucks don't now. Many places never had one to begin with. Most places have a Costa though. Even big towns with over 100,000 people have lost their Starbucks, but my little town with under 25,000 people has a Costa.

I definitely share your enthusiasm for this place; the whole concept, the wow factor of the two lifts and emerging out of the tower to an amazing view (surprisingly sunny weather for December 👍) the contrast of the old power house building with the ultra-modern penthouse flats, the exposed brickwork and girders inside. I particularly appreciate that the developers of the shopping mall have resisted putting any signage at all on the outside, retaining the dignity of the building and its history. I hope you and your family get to go there one day 😊 x

Thanks for another great video, Steve. As it happens, I need to go visit a friend (on Monday) who lives in Battersea, and he told me to get a train to the power station. I watched your video hoping to find out where the new tube station is, and I briefly glimpsed it as they were showing a map, so this was very helpful. I dare say I might pop in to get me some of that wonderful smell

To give you an idea of London prices, I live in Lincolnshire and yesterday I went to the fish and chip shop, then took the order home as a takeaway. I had a fish and chips with mushy peas whilst my partner had fishcake, chips and mushy peas. It cost £10 exactly for the whole lot which is just less than $13US.

    • @andybaker2456
      @andybaker2456 Před rokem +3

To be fair, those prices in the Power Station aren't really representative of fish and chip prices from local London chippies. We aren't all made of money down here! 😉

Even people that might be attracted to live in one of those apartments wouldn't want to always pay the prices and shop at those high end shops every day. I would be suprised if some of those shops survive beyond a couple of years at the most.

Lol this is so funny... I was there in the evening on the day this vid was out. We'd gone done to London for pokémon go fest and stumbled across this place going to a wagamama restaurant via Google maps. I think it's located at the area that was still under construction in the video. We had no idea it was a shopping mall. But what an iconic art deco building, it's a fantastic job they've done, really good that this has been regenerated and kept it's old character. Definetly going to go back and do the elevator run. Can confirm that there is still no signage on the building. We thought it was luxury condos

Hi Steve - thank you for this video. I have visited Battersea Power Station twice since it opened as a public space. They really did a great job in restoring and preserving this huge building and as Tim pointed out in his video many original features have been retained. Just as important is the redevelopment of the area surrounding the Power Station - there are now some very nice public plazas with riverside views etc. It has created a new destination in London outside of the West End and that is a good thing for the city. A couple of things I should add - a huge factor in this development was the building of a new tube station specifically for the Power Station. These are a really really big deal in London - there is a video about the new station and you will see what a big event it was when it finally opened.
    czcams.com/video/BSVE3Be-UE0/video.html
Also - Battersea Power Station is very near the US Embassy in London! It was a bit of a surprise when it was relocated out of Grosvenor Square to it's new location on the South Bank in the Vauxhall/Battersea area.

One of London's paradoxes. Very rich mashed right up next to solid working class areas, they did the same out in Stratford. I lived there in the 90's, so much is now unrecognisable but some is just the same, or worse.
I'll be interested to see how well this area does, it is nice to see the power station in use but did London really need another exclusive shopping area?
That lift is the business though 😁

No Steve, it was a real dump after the power station was decommissioned. When it was working it wasn’t very clean and the area was run down. They had big problems attracting investors for it. For many years only a tiny part of the power station was occupied despite overseas investment being initially interested. They have done the same with the east side of London, traditionally called the Isle of Dogs 🤷‍♀️and all the old dock yard area. We used to use the warehouses for roller skating in. They now house very exclusive and expensive penthouses. The area is now a financial/ business area of London called Canary Wharf. The transport system was extended out there and lots of cafes and eateries.

Steve, I am not keen on shopping either. For the last 20 years or so all of our grocery shopping has been done for home delivery. In the UK all the major supermarkets offer home delivery. You use the on-line shopping web programme to select your items then select a 60 minute delivery slot on the day you want and pay. The whole cost of picking and delivery could be from 99pence to say £3. The refrigerated delivery van draws up at your house at your chosen one hour slot. As I say, we have been doing this for at least 20 years. We have been in a remote village, on holiday in the Yorkshire Dales, and the Tesco van has delivered our weeks grocery ordered back at home weeks earlier. Tesco, Sainsburys, Waitrose, Asda, Morrisons are some of the national supermarkets.
How about you making a video on this?
