- APOLOGIES FOR THE BELL! I know it gets tedious! Lesson learned!
In this video, we going to conduct an operating session on my shelf layout, The Grunge. This video will show essentially the entire session, including all the moves, at prototypical speeds. Shorter highlight video here: • HIGHLIGHTS! - Small La...
For many of my viewers, prototypical operations is the goal of building a layout. I my first ops video for The Grunge, I showed that you don't need to have a completed layout to have a satisfying op session.
Since that last operations video, there's been some additional work on the Grunge layout, including the construction of the Tenement house, the addition of the Smith Sign Company building, and the installation of some scenery. So let's have some fun while showing off the new additions.

I spent 38 years as a locomotive engineer. If I had let the bell ring like that the conductor would have climbed into the cab and ripped the ringer control out of the control stand! You need it for the street and maybe when beginning a move....that's it
Good to know. Where were you when I was making the video? 😉
Thank you…I thought it was just me 🤔
As a conductor myself ur right I would 😂😂
I love the layout! How about naming the road, Short Street?
Loved the layout and the speed restraint. Keep up the good work!
Thanks. I do like to run at prototypical speeds. Sort of savor the experience, y'know?
Nice vid. Enjoyed this ops session very much. Your explanation of the moves and the various camera angles were satisfying.
Thank you! I really tried to mix up the camera angles to get some j retesting shots and make the layout feel bigger than it is.
Hi everyone. I’ve gotten a number of comments/complaints about the bell in this video. Sorry about that! So if the bell bothers you, consider muting the sound and putting captions on. I posted a shorter “highlight” video where the volume is considerably lower.
Beautiful layout! I love the street running section
Thanks! Glad you liked it.
Good session. Nice camera work. Thanks
Glad you enjoyed it. I try to mix up the angles so it doesn't get TOO monotonous. But that can be tough on a small layout.
Superb video, massive fan of small layouts like this, need to get on with mine and get my staging built, thanks for sharing
Pete
Hopefully this lights a fire. 🔥
Nice ops session! Thanks.
Thanks for watching!
Would like to live in that 3rd floor apartment!
According to the sign, there's an apartment for rent! ;)
Pretty cool 😊
Thanks!
Very nice!
Thanks!
This video was a huge inspiration for me! Thank you so much!
Glad to hear it! Do you have a layout and need to get operating? Or are you starting from scratch?
I actually just started track planning a few days ago. I want to have have a small layout with operations and this video was a fantastic example of what I'm looking for!
Excellent. The track plan can be found at www.chessiemctd.com/the-grunge-track-plan/ if it helps!
Thanks!
Also I got to thinking on that street name, I came up with "Industrial Avenue." This is due to the fact that the train is working a variety of buildings and industries and I just thought it would fit in.
As a European who lived in FL for 12 years I never understood the grade crossing mentality whereas in Europe we’ll build a bridge, tunnel or full barrier crossing gates where needed.
I really like that TPD boxcar!
It’s a renumbered Atlas car. Although I have been considering doing a custom run of TPD cars…
@@ThePixelDepotLLC I would buy a couple...
The Rio Grande is always looking for shipping partners
It's fun watching you switch on the unfinished layout. May I suggest the grass along the track under the building will get less sunlight, this could be reflected in its lushness. Nicely weatherd rolling stock, so subtle.
Thank you for the comments and the suggestions!
I agree. There would not be a lush carpet of grass in the shadow, under a building (@9:50). More likely there would be dirt and some trash. On a positive note, this is a great shelf layout and I love the track plan which provides so much in the way of different operations. It's going to be really amazing when finished. Thank you.
My first operating video!
My father has been railway modelling nearly 70 years,
I’m taking my first tentative steps since my last layout 40 years ago. Plenty of tanks and aircraft in between though!
I’ve found all your videos to be informative and entertaining. I do like your style and how happy you are to take feedback.
I’ll be modelling in N gauge though in a Post WW2 European setting allowing me to run Steam and Diesel.
Ian
Glad to have you along, Ian! It makes me happy that you’re enjoying the videos!
@@ThePixelDepotLLC 😊
I was in Tucson, retired! Working on projects. Mostly free lance stuff
nice... I must build something and get switching again! (although I could never put up with the bell for the whole session, so a house rule was only for crossings!)
I will never again run the bell for the entire session. Bugged me and everyone else who watched the video.
@@ThePixelDepotLLC I must agree. However the quality of everything else let me watch the entire video 😊
Just starting an N Gauge layout, my first layout in 40 years, your videos are an excellent source😊
@@bugler75 Thank you so much!
I know it aint proper but when its only me playing, the damn bell gets turned off. Good session tho
Honestly, me too. When I was filming I couldn’t wait to shut it off between takes. 😉
Me three 😂
Great video. The use of the bell is appropriate but I think you could turn it off and just explain that for the video it is simply too loud and distracting.
Thanks! I’ve learned my lesson with the bell.
nice
Thanks!
This *ding* video *ding* was *ding* really *ding* good! *ding* despite *ding* the constant *ding* Bell *ding*
but you knew that already..
..
DING!!!!
😆
Love the layout but the Conductor and Brakeman on the ground might not want to listen to that engine bell ringing all day.
Thanks! For the record I’ve had lots of “conductors” and “brakemen” comment that they, indeed, do NOT want to listen to the bell all day!
I really enjoyed your operation video. I think 🤔 a good idea for a street would be “ Industrial Ave . “
Good suggestion!
BAKER. STREET-- like the song.
I quit counting the number of times that bell was ringing after my wife said she was going to spend a dollar on shopping for shoes and clothing for each time I’d ring it on my layout!
Nice layout--- but needs more bell!!
🤣
Nice...the concrete effect came up great on the load out platform front and center on the layout...name for the street?? Switchload street or Business Ave
Thanks. I'm pretty happy with the effect. I've added both names to the voting list.
Personal opinion, the bell's too loud.
Great inspirational video!
I think, since American Can has been there since God was a corporal, the road should be American Ave.
I think after filming and editing the whole thing, I agree with you about the bell. 🙂 it’s always a bit of a balancing act, though.
Because it drowns out you voiceover....
By the time we were done setting out, the bell was over heated. Not a "True fact" bell's do overheat. But then again, I keep hearing a ringing in my ears.
What’s that? I can’t hear you over the bell. 😉
Although necessary, the Clanging Bell becomes annoying after several minutes.
I still enjoyed the Video! It demonstrates you can run a Railroad without much space.
Another few feet at both ends will be something I will try.
The “Flats” look great. May I ask what kits did you use and are they still available?
Armstrong Avenue for the street name.
Just curious, why did you pick that name?
Lancaster Street
The bell is gota go
I can’t argue with you!
Turn the bell off so I can watch and listen to
The street "Dead Ringer"
😁
Great video, but that bell man that's annoying
Yeah, I got a lot of feedback on that one. Next time will be better. 🙂
this video is grumpy old fart approved. john
Love it!
How about Bell Street……..just saying
Throwing a little shade. Nice! 😃
Commerce Blvd
Great video. one thing though. I understand that the bell is prototypical, however listening to it for the entire video was annoying af. I had to turn down the volume, and that made it hard to hear your descriptions of what was happening.
Revere Street, after Paul Revere.
Also on the voting list!
The only thing I didn't like about the Op session was the bell, otherwise it was great and the scenery that is done is looking good. I turned the sound off for the video.
Honestly, the bell drove me nuts, too. Never again. But thanks for the kind words!
Turn the bell off
Ponca street
Given the locale for the MCTD this is a great suggestion and a strong contender!
Chama st
Pixel Rd
It's on the voting list!
Great video but 20 some minutes of bell, it was hard to get through.
Understood. Sorry about that!
Trying to think of a street name based around grunge without being too obvious. Nirvana Avenue? Bit naff. Best I could come up with is Alice Chain Street, which has a bit of an industrial ring to it. Still thinking.
91st St.?
Nine Inch Nails factory Street? 😁
@@bugler75 😂😂
@@jimbarrett1975 👍🏼😁
@@bugler75 it wasn't my best idea I have to say 😂 I might have to incorporate a nine inch nail factory into my layout now.
Why not call it U-street? 🙄
It's on the voting list!
Nope I’m out… turn off your bell man
Pixelstreet.
Might be a little too on the nose. 😁
