  • Stop watching sports. I've spent my entire life a huge NBA fan. But recently as I've delved into digital minimalism, I've come to realize that watching sports can be a huge waste of time. And there could be more to it than just time. Here's why.

I just know I have to because it takes to much time and takes an emotional toll on me. In the video you say a small amount of sports consumption is good. I think for me, I just have to be done with them forever. No watching on TV, no going to stadiums/parks, no buying jerseys and other sports-related memorabilia. So brilliant of you to share this story, in a well thought out and well articulated way.
I’ve been mapping out sports, fandom and tendencies for a while now, to get the nature of the sports space. So I’ve got caveats to be addressed for all parts of the video. It’s a great conversation that would get the authorities to make the space less prone to the downsides you shared. I don’t think it’s as much on the fans, fans are ppl just stumbling onto interest non-consciously; as we do about so much in life.

100%! To me it's all about the balance of positivity and negativity. If you are feeling worse than better after binging sports, you might have a problem.
Statistically your team has a very low chance of winning a championship, and I know some extreme fans view it as championship or bust. That means a 99% chance of disappointment or heartbreak!

Not much of an NFL guy but I used to watch my favorite team(local) every Sunday afternoon. All it took for me to stop watching my favorite team play every Sunday was that I overslept and woke up after 4pm. Strange but relieving feeling. Then I did it again next Sunday unintentionally. Then again. Then again. Since then, I haven't watch a full football game in like 5-6 years. Since then, I only watch highlights on CZcams nowadays. That goes with other sports as well. Also, at my night job, I do tune in for a hockey or baseball game on the radio just to past time. But I'm just not invested it anymore. Plus with so many options for entertainment these days...

Bron's my GOAT but everything you said in this video is spot on. Ironically every single time my team has won the championship, I've watched less than 5% of the regular season and mainly tuned in during the playoffs. The attachment goes beyond just the game. I don't like playoffs. I think too much of the season is playoffs. Why does a game have to matter or be meaningful. Why not just watch the game for what it is and then go get something good to eat? I liked watching baseball because there weren't so many rounds of playoffs. Now it's like any other sport. If a team can't prove itself in 162 games, why have another chance? Oh, Tigers lost a doubleheader! Gotta go out and get 5 pounds of chocolate to console myself!

Made some relatable points in this video. I quit obsessively following football/soccer for the exact same reasons about 5 years back. I went from hardcore to basically not giving a damn anymore.
It's all greed and the players are on massive wages (which is a slap in the face for the fans who support these guys through thick & thin).
For example; my former club hired an egotistical manager that liked to cause controversy for the sake of it and that was the one of the multiple straw's that ached the Camel's back for me.
The media (looking at you, Sky Sports!) are to blame too, creating drama between these pantomime villains and outrageous headlines to increase circulation, sales viewership, etc.
I now only follow two sports that don't take up my weekends (& the games rarely clash, which is a great bonus!).

Are you telling me I can't make the Tigers win by lighting a candle for them? Heck, there is no Tiger player who knows I exist. It is a waste of time. When every song I hear on the radio makes me think of them. When I sneak a peak at a game while I'm in church. I stayed home from church to see the Tigers win the World Series. I had a VCR. I could have taped it. I've wasted time in my frustration. I don't regret traveling for them. I took two jetliners to Florida to see the Tigers. I've also traveled to Denver to watch the Tigers. I enjoy traveling and seeing other places. I was with a group of Tiger fans in Florida. I was interested in seeing Walt Disney World and Epcot Center, which I did. It was a lot more fun than watching the Tigers play. We went to a spring training game almost everyday. I would watch the game, then back to the motel, a dip in the pool and out for dinner. Then my then-husband and I would watch a movie or I'd curl up with a good book. Some of the others in the group would go out and find another spring training game to attend. Some of them would bury their heads in stat books. They had no interest in Walt Disney World or going to a zoo or the alligator farm. I wish we could have see more in Florida and I wish I had stayed there for more days when we weren't watching games. The problem is the games were usually 1-4, no time to do something before the game and too late to do something after. In Denver what I enjoyed the most was socializing with those at the hostel. There were six women in a room and it was like a pajama party. While the person who slept in the bed above me was from Michigan, she wasn't a sports fan. When I told her I was watching the Tigers, she decided she would go to the game. We talked about the game afterwards, which consisted of how happy we were the Tigers won. Other than that my chatting with other people with not that much about the Tigers, although there were a lot of Tiger fans in the hostel. I was with one group and I could really gripe and complain about the Tigers and got kicked off. I've managed to find another way to comment on that site by using another name. I don't gripe much. I might ask a question about why they did this. I read comments--but really, I don't have time.

When your team wins it feels great. When they lose, its like the mask slips off and you realize how trivial it all is. Wasting so much energy in something most of the time your going to be just disappointed. Because teams go through cycles. And if your lucky you get a couple decades of winning. But then its balanced out by years of heartbreak or just being terrible.
