- The tiny Pacific Island of Banaba, was once one of the richest sources of Guano in the world. Guano is the faeces of seabirds which have accumulated over millions of years, and because it is an excellent source of nitrogen phosphate it is an excellent fertiliser. During the first half of the twentieth century, the island was devastated by phosphate mining and its indigenous population forcibly removed.
In 1997, a group of Banaban people, and others with various links to the island visited Banaba. This is the story of how the lives of the Banaban people were irrevocably changed by global forces over which they had no control.

When I watch videos like this tears can't stop themselves from falling from my eyes. As a Banaban my heart breaks every time we hear what happened to our ancestors
I was here in 1976 to 1979 when I was 9yrs old my uncle works in the phosphate...my favourite Island Banaba for swimming in the boat harbour love the island
Not only Rabi, but in Solomon islands too.. Most of them lives in Wagina and other small islands there till today.
My mum usually talked about this story, seeing it for myself is really heart breaking... Greed is a disease that has plaque the Pacific for so many years...
It's never a good thing to find yourself useful by a superpower
Its indeed sad, My heart goes out to Teburerai and all the people of Banaba for losing your Island and its beauty and the way of life. I pray God will heal you and heal your land,
Thank you for telling the truth
Makes me so mad hearing the white people talk about how much they enjoyed their childhood there completely disregarding what their people did for them to even get there
love this
That's weird. I'm sitting in Minnesota looking at an Australian lady sitting on an island in the middle of the South Pacific wearing a Minnesota shirt😅
I had a vivid dream few months back and Ocean Island was mentioned. In dream I was on a train and i asked a tall man where are we heading and he said Ocean Island. I did not know it was even a place till I looked it up.
So sad. How selfish and inconsiderate people can be when money is involved :(
My Question how big 8s Banaba compared to Rabi
It is 3x smaller than Rabi.....I would know cause I was born in Rabi

Pliz what the year when bananas go and lived on Rabi
@@mangaritaanatoore7355 I think it would have been late 1945/1946, post WW2
I think they will obey for what the government told them to do.
Why? They were leagally offered Rabi island to them and they accepted the offer
Why ...???? Yes we're legally offered Rabi n we accepted but do we have any other choice...."NO NO NO" but our hearts ached so much for our beloved Banaba island which you took it's wealth for your own gain 😭. That's greediness .
To me the treatment to Banabans was fair
Wtf
You wouldn't know cause you weren't stripped of your land, identity, culture, and heritage.....
Fair...????? How dare you say fair to us Banabans 😡 You took what was rightfully ours when you told our elders that everything is well prepared on their new home called Rabi but actually it was all a lie and you said it's "FAIR" you nut head. Think before you comment next time😡
