  • Prior to its Summer stint running out of York on Waverley tours, 60103 'Flying Scotsman' ran a final tour from London Kings Cross to York with an interesting itinerary. Starting at Kings Cross the A3 would run to Peterborough along its old stomping ground including some now rare fast line running between Welwyn and the water stop at Holme. After Peterborough the pacific would divert off the mainline and run through Stamford to reach the Midland Mainline at Syston. Once again the tour was put on the fast for a run North.
The shot starts at Biggleswade station after a quick change of plans owing the vast amounts of line side vegetation at Lindsells. Here Flying Scotsman is seen flying along at its maximum permitted speed. After a long, but speedy dash to Loughborough, the A3 is seen amongst the masses of onlookers. Unfortunately the speed wasn't quite what I thought it would be, but non-the-less the Gresley Racehorse lifts it unassisted 12 coach load away in fine style.

Two nice captures Will, she was certainly on a roll at Biggleswade & Loughborough was fine even if busy & with that dreaded announcement lol.I just stayed local for the Duchess, assume your car is sorted now. ... Brian.

Thanks Brian. Was certainly living up to her name at Biggleswade. Fast line steam at Loughborough has been on my filming bucket list for a while now so glad I can tick it off. Car has just been through a rather expensive MOT and respected repairs so I'm hoping that my luck will change a bit now... cheers - Will

Am I right in assuming that steam at full boiler pressure is applied to the "Scotsman's" whistle? If so, cannot a pressure control valve be fitted in the circuit to reduce this pressure and provide us with a more pleasant note rather than this awful high-pitched scream?

We're living in Germany. We're often asked "Where is it better?" Standard answer "Some things better here, some things better in the States, a lot of things just different". One thing better in the states, the steam whistles.

Personally mon amour...As youngsters in Ireland, we always loved it when the trains passed by at a leisurely rate, as it provided us a great chance to bounce a few ripe tomatoes off some of the pork-pie-faced blokes who stuck their mugs out the window/door openings. Blimey, what fun. ESPECIALLY if they were holding a pint a' bitters that they then dropped!
    Ho-Ho-Ho!...as Monsieur Santa would say.
