- A couple challenging days on the sheep farm has left me feeling frustrated and very discouraged.
I have two ewes showing signs of Listeriosis which progresses fast if you don't catch it...
On a better note,
the weaned ewes are much quieter, as well as their lambs across the road.
and we sorted out our rams again after a good run of another breeding season.

Years ago, vets used to believe that animals could not feel pain, physical or emotional. Your compassion honours their spirit.
People who say that animals don't feel pain must have part of their brains and or hearts missing. Seriously, undoubtedly animals feel pain, just as we do. They have souls, they have brains, thus they feel pain. It's only logical and one would have to be blind not to see it.
It’s worse than that they say babies in the whom don’t feel pain..
@@susanpendell4215 they used to perform open heart surgery on new borns without anaesthetic because they thought they couldn't feel pain, and for years there was (and in some areas still is) a false belief that black and aboriginal people didn't feel the same amount if pain as white people and would get horrific treatment in hospital. Even now, you're far less likely to be taken seriously if you're in pain if you're a black woman, which is why the pregnancy mortality rate is much higher especially in the US than of white women.

Not all animals feel emotional pain. Thats a particular part of the brain and not all animals have it or use it the same way we do. More intelligent animals feel emotional pain etc, apes, dolphins but animals with smaller brains and intelligence don't really feel emotional pain because they don't have the capability etc fish, snails, worms.
I appreciate you showing us the difficulties despite your fears of people's reactions. These are the harsh realities, and it's important we see those too, just as much as the good days.

I think by showing the bad stuff you're being true to yourself and the people that watch your content.
Anyone who keeps animals either for business or as pets knows that difficult decisions have to be made and it's really hard and emotional for us and that's because we care and fight to keep them alive when sometimes the animals best interest is to let them go.
We can see how much you love your sheep and you give them a chance when I imagine others wouldn't so please dont beat yourself up about it 💕

Your young ewes have a real bloom on them. (Australian expression for super, super healthy)
Hi Sandi! It always hurts when something happens with our animals. We KNOW you are doing everything you possibly can AND the fact that you get upset, worry, second-guess yourself, etc, only proves how much you love these animals. If you didn't care, you wouldn't try so hard to save them. I am glad to see ZERO negative comments or thumbs down. It had BETTER stay that way! You deserve only positivity. Stay strong! Stay healthy!

I so wish I could have seen this video about 4 months ago. One of my favorite goats went down with listeriosis. She hadn’t been down long when I found her. In the summer our goats are on pasture and rotated every week so no real reason for her to get this. She didn’t make it but your videos help me know that I’m really not failing, sometimes things just happen. Bless you and your kind ❤️

I work with horses and have had days like you showed here. I usually find a quiet place to go and have a good cry. Gets the frustration out and then I am able to just get on with it. Hugs!

Hi Sandi 🙋🏻♂️ Great video it shows that your a true farmer and how much you really care! You show the real things that happen on the farm! It’s always a sad and hard time to have sick animals or even worse losing them but, like my dad always use to say you can try as hard as you possibly can and do everything that should be done but yet there is always something that happens and your going to lose some! The only way your not going to have another sick sheep or lose another sheep is to not have any sheep ! The fact is your raising a living product and at any given time it can die ! That’s how farm life is wether it’s grain or livestock it’s a living product that’s one step away from perfection or disaster! You just have to keep your chin up and be proud of all that you have done. Just look at that awesome set of lambs you just weaned they would not look like that if it wasn’t for your care from conception to weaning! 😎

It's never easy to lose, whether it's a family member of the human race race, fur baby or farm animal... they are all loved and well cared for. You are a strong woman, and care to your best ability and with your vet's guidance, giving everything you can to your sheep. I love seeing the sheep standing back watching as you were treating their young friend. Thanks for sharing your time with us again. I've had a fair amount of Listeriosis issues also. Things I think have helped with the issue.
1. High penicillin rate, the sooner the better
2. Inoculate ensilaged feed at harvest
3. Try your best to harvest when ground is dry. Also raise discbine when cutting feed. Like to cut 2 inch above ground.
I would also suggest propping the sheep up against a solid wall (cement, plywood) and place them so the side they keep turning too is against the wall. That way they turn into the wall instead of walking in circles or laying on their side, digging into the pack. Obvious electrolytes in the water helps if they can drink. For mine it generally seems to take 3 days for them to start improving. Did have 7 last year and 2 did not recover. Diffidently various from animal to animal. I have heard bird droppings can also cause it, but have not read any solid material on that. Wish you the best
Glad to see Goat and the ewes seem to be trying to comfort you. They seemed to know something is wrong. I could see they were keeping a careful watch on you and a few ewes came up close to you. It looked like they were trying to see what was going on with you.

Yes very much so. A source for your Listeria could very much so be corn silage. I went through a bad issue here. But that year we used open packing. Lost two cows to it. We now use bagging like you and have not had this show up again. Any feed source that has potential to mold can be your primary source. Hang in there Sandi. Love your openness and honesty with all your viewership. And am intrigued with your operation under roof.

Hei Sandi, sorry to see those two sheep, and for no you are doing the best you can. Farmers around here have to watch out for caturin and poop in their silage and hay, if the sheep eat food with that in it and get sick the symtom is the same as your sheep. You know those air balloons by car dealerships with the arms and they sway back and forth. When you move your sheep with your arms flaying up and down I laugh EVERY TIME. Lol to cute
I’m sorry you’re going through that. I lost 6 of my does who found wilted wild cherry leaves ...I didn’t even know the tree was on the other side of the fence. They died suddenly...I still tear up when I think of my sweet babies.
Our son lost his 4H steer the afternoon we were headed to the fair with him, as a result of getting into nightshade plants in the pasture. So hard to take!

For those who want to read more about this. Recovery is rare so the fact that Sandi is trying her best to save them as soon as she notices they are sick makes her one heck of a farmer/owner/breeder/woman!
Sandi it always irritates me that people give you heck over something that you really have no control over. Life happens, crap happens. Because thats what we do .... try until the end... we are the keepers !! Most anyone with livestock knows your determination to help and try ... you are a great example of the compassion we as producers have for our livestock !!

Hi Sandi. Nurse here. It would be best to remove all the urine, feces and contaminated hay from a pen before putting in another group of sheep. Diseases can be passed easily from feces and surfaces from one group of animals to another. Also, wash all the water buckets/containers too. I know what it's like to work with sick beings and it is very stressful. Keep up the good work!
When my goats show these symptoms, I treat for both listeriosis and polio. Double whammy. Knock on wood, I havent had a case in 5+ years. God bless Sandi. Farming can be heartbreaking.

lol. I would have panicked, separated them from the others, propped them up with something, maybe even used a sling, SubQ fluids, maybe even an IV .
You were so cool and calm about everything, scared and worried, but calm. I guess having an SOP would help prioritize the level of care.

You have to do what you can to save them. Even more so because of the earlier ewe. Sometimes you win and sometimes you lose but you fight for them. Don't ever just throw up your hands and say I'm not trying. Do what you can. Thank you for your honesty.

Hi Sandi our Listeria issues in NZ come from mouldy baleage / silage , but there are 2-3 reported cases on pasture as well .
Thank you for explaining so much detail about the Listeriosis, what an utterly horrible illness.
Definitely the white lights.
Spending your time to help sick animals or humans is always worth it because even if they pass away you know they felt love and hope to the end. Farming is like nursing birth to death.
Remember keep some of your love for yourself you are doing good

Weather it's horses, cows, goats or sheep we try our best to keep them healthy. When one is down we do our best to doctor it. I spent four days in a cold Barn day and night to bring back a horse that everybody said had no chance. I so sorry that you are going through this. An emotional rollercoaster. I pray that you have success and if not I pray you had peace that you did everything possible

I've been around farming my entire life and i even found this hard to watch. But some things are just out of ones control. It's hard not to take it personally but that's the farmer in you Sandi. I remember as a 10 year old staying up all night on calf watch waiting for the herd to start calving. It was an amazing experience but i'll never forget the ones that didn't make it.
Sandi, if it wasn't for your great management skills, your sheep would not be in such great shape, as they are.
Don't give credit to other people, you should be taking all the credit, for your wonderful care.
Sandi you can’t beat yourself up over losing sheep. It’s all part of having animals. Trust me! We feel your pain as well. You have done a great job with your herd.

I am so sorry you are having this Listeriosis. I have never heard of it (I'm not a farmer or a medical professional!) and I see it and yes that is devastating. I am sure it is ten times worse for you to think about and I can't guess how hard it is to try to care for them and treat them with hopes, and see those hopes dwindle. Thank you for sharing it with us. I hope pain shared is actually more bearable. You and all your sheep are in my prayers.
