This is something my trainer has drilled me on with the TROT! I hadn’t tried it at the canter though! Standing in your stirrups is so so good for your balance and leg strength 💪
Fantastic!
Love the vido but have a fuer problres lilly bucking when out hew do i stolp?
@@karenleeming3648 Do you lunge your horse before riding? It helps warm them up, loosen & prepare the muscles for work & get the bucks out! 👍🏻
@@calista1280 woah I just did that a couple of times (I do it normally but I was doing it like 3x a day since she always bucks / gets angry) and it worked, tysm!
WE DID IT! This excersize is truly a game changer ! 😁 Practiced my last two rides and had a few AHA moments. My horse loves it! My legs were so much better. This will be Incorporated into my daily riding until I am strong enough to do it well. I gotta tell you, I was very sore after the first day 😅
Thanks for sharing!! Amazing!
This is exactly what I needed for my students!! Such an easy way to explain 🤣 I am always that teacher yelling "Longer legs! Use the lower leg don't squeeze with the knees or thighs!" So this is what I needed to help them
Oh how I love this chick. When she screeches "stop gripping with your knees, put your legs on" (about 1.46 into the video) I can't help but chuckle. One because she sounds so Aussie (and love it) and also because it sounds familiar from my pony club days. And by using 2 point to help with getting the correct position for your knee and therefore not gripping is a lightbulb moment. Thank you. 😀👏🏻
Hahahaha I will show Alicia this - she will get a kick out of it! x
Yes! 2 point work is where it's at. So many times I have people asking me to help them learn to sit the canter better and I immediately have them up in 2 point working g on their leg strength a few have gotten irritated with me saying they were not here to learn a jumping position but quite the opposite. I have to tell them they MUST work on their leg and core strength to be able to sit better. Doesn't matter if your riding in and english saddle, western saddle, endurance saddle or bareback! If you don't work on yourself your horse pays the price unfortunately.
Thanks for the video!
What exercises would you suggest to strengthen legs and core muscles to prepare for when I do finally get to start taking lessons again? My horses are too young right now to ride, but I want to be as ready as I possibly can be once I can start riding again!
I used to only ever trail ride, but I want to start training for more than just bomb proofing and trail riding so I know I'm going to need to better myself first! Any help and tips are appreciated! :D
Yes!!!!! Good work you!! 💕
Hi Jenn, have you watched our Pilates videos? There are some exercises in there for horse riders to get stronger czcams.com/video/BR0qkZy0sbQ/video.html ✨

Thank you!! Guess I'm scrolling through all of your videos tonight! Your channel is so helpful!
Wow!!
This totally flipped “how to canter” on its head! Thank you Alicia for such amazing, easy to understand and implement principles and examples. My riding has changed dramatically in the last few weeks since I started putting into practice what I’m learning here. The best part? My horse is happier too!
Glad it was helpful!
Hello Alicia. I’m just a happy hacker on a cob, but I find your videos so helpful, easy to understand and even though I will never ride a dressage horse the techniques I’m learning are helping me and horse at our low level of riding. Just wanted to let you know how much your time and effort is appreciated Thank you.
Love this!!!
Ditto for me. Love your videos. I just try to enjoy riding again after 30 years. Very helpful tips from you
I'm exactly the same as you but am loving learning and growing as a happy rider!! Love my clever little Cob!!!!!
I practiced this today and it was really helpful! I've been struggling to understand the correct way to sit the canter and feel like I keep changing to try to correct it but not knowing how. We worked up to step 3 and am keen to work on rising canter next :) Thank you!
Great job!
#Harlow
I have been doing this without knowing how fantastic it is! My little quarter horse has an enormous canter so the only way I could ride it was in a two point position. Eventually, I started sitting and going back to two-point. I was doing the right thing and didn’t even know it! 🥳 I do not bounce in the canter because of it.
Great job!
Never thought of using the rising canter like this😍 Can't wait to try this to see if fixes the last bit of my seat in the canter🤩 You are great at describing how you can inprove yourself through easy small steps. Thank you Alicia
Super!! Can't wait for you to try this out xx
This is such a great video and has helped me learn how to not bounce in my canter!! My instructor was so impressed she now lets me ride the advanced horses!!! So thank you sooo much!!!
YAY!! Love it!! We can't wait to hear more about your progress! Go YOU!! x
I was bouncing around like a Bobble
Head the other day so this should help when in canter 😅
Let us know how you go trying this out x

Welcome to our channel! So glad the videos have made your riding so much better! YAY!! x
Fabulous! And so timely for both me and my horse! Thank you!! ❤️
Great!!
Hii! I am a young rider. I have been trying my hardest, giving out all my strength on the horse to not bounce. The horse i am riding is a nervous one and speeds up with just a mere mistake of mine. He is uncomfortable to the sensations of the reins. As i have been trying my hardest, thinking about him more than myself, i always leaned forward on the horse to not bounce harshly on his back. This video has enabled me to look at all of my riding experiences from a different point. Thank you for that. I am now looking forward to learn and get inspired from you. Love you so much! Have a great day.
Thank you very much, your explanations are so clear :) and it’s a joy to see your beautiful Duo 😍
Thank you! 😃
Thank you! Can't wait to try it.

I've only watched 6 minutes of this video and you are fixing all of my problems! I was so happy when you said 'we know what we should be doing, but how do we actually get our body to DO it'? Exactly!

Tell us how you go!
Thank you soo much for this video. I have struggled for a long time with canter as my legs have a tendency to move up the side of my horse, so much so that I don't really canter at all on my horse. You have given me something I can work on in steps to build my confidence and my leg strength which is achievable!! Thank you for your time and effort Alicia, you have given me courage to want to continue on my dressage journey. (I am doing my 3rd ever Intro test on Sunday!!!)
Super!! Glad it's all working well for you!! Best of luck in your upcoming competition!!
Amazing video, can't wait to try this on my Frisian girl. You teach me so much and take away my insecurities. Thank you so much, keep it going on like this!!
Love this!! Tell us how you go 😘
Can’t wait to try this!
Have fun!
Great teacher ma’am thanks a lot
Love your explanation. Hope to implement in my own riding and eventually pass off to other people. Many thanks.
Thank you for the video .. I started to canter since a year and a half and still do it wrong 😅 I lean forward and I do GRAP so strong with my leg to feel that I'm controlling the situation .. I do bounce of course .. the instructor always ask me to lean backward which FREAKS me out because I don't feel that I'm balanced .. anyway this journey will continue 😗🐎 hopefully one day I will do it right .. but I feel embarrassed telling people that I ride since 2 years and still do it wrong 😮💨🤭
We LOVE it that you're so comfortable sharing this with us! This journey is not easy but we hope we have imparted something that you can use on your next ride and we're super excited to hear about your progress! x
Great exercises, can't wait to try them!

👋 Hi There, Karen from Canada🐴 the clothes peg is exactly what happens Lolol I love the way you simplify and explain things. Hopefully, I will be back riding, then, I will review all this information from past videos, and try it all out on my horse. I can't wait. 🙂 Thank you Alicia for all your advice!!!!

Beautiful horse & thank you for sharing this helpful info 🌞

Great again. I have done the rising canter. I quite enjoy it. It takes a bit of practice but makes your legs work.

Great to hear!
This video was sooooooo helpfull thankyou
So glad you liked it!! Thanks for watching xx
Very helpful thankyou!
Our pleasure!
love this!
Thank you x
I'm a beginner so i appreciate the clear explanations. It helps to have more than one instructor as each person explains it a little differently. Thank you for your time!
You are so welcome! We love helping people xx
This does work! Thanks!
Great to hear!
These tips are nust so good and fun to do and my mare cantered freely instead of the choppy canter she used to do and when I did the two point position and sit for three etc was a real eyeopener. That tuck the pelvis freed my legs and opened my hips.Thank you so much. Going to have a go at step 4.
That was really helpful. I can’t wait to try this out. I had back surgery almost 2 weeks ago so I won’t be riding again for a few months at least. I think I will have to rewatch your videos before then.
Feel better soon!! Can't wait to hear how it goes for you xx
I love this so much
Thank you :)
Can’t wait to try it ❤
