I’m retiring soon and am looking forward to keeping busy and pulling more firewood out of my 80 acre ADK woodlot for myself and perhaps a few neighbors. I applaud your ingenuity with regard to the add ons you incorporated to optimize your setup. Well done, Sir !!

    I've had mine for over forty years. I converted it to electric operation six years ago with a 1hp Baldor 120 vac motor. Works great! The only thing I did was replace the return spring six years ago. I split 5 cords a year. I don't know about copycats, but to me Super Split is king. A GREAT machine! Shalom/gw

    Good video. Ours is now 15 years old. I added additional return springs. The only problem I've ever had (happened twice early on) was when a heavy round with a fork in it lifted up and fell over backward on the spline shaft when it was fully extended, knocking the end of the spline below the pinion gear. It makes a terrible racket. Both times I shut it down quick, then you have to pull the allen head bolts to free it up. On recent examination the pinion gear and shaft are still in great shape. I usually split about 10 cords a year unless I hire out to clean up storm damage. It's about time to replace the original belts on ours soon. I added a tow hitch also but removed the leg and put a swivel jack on it further up. They really are amazing machines.

    Just when I thought I had seen all the SS videos, I searched for more and yours popped up. Glad I did because it is very informative as to what I can expect when I receive mine on Monday the 15th. I ordered the J model on January 6th and was told by Paul it would be around an 8 week wait or so, due to a back order delay on manufacturing due to the events of this past year. Anyway, I didn’t order the larger 42x46 production table as I am able to make mine for around the 3rd of the cost as to what the company sells them for. I do like your idea of adjustable support legs and will work off your idea. I’m in SE Michigan where we have an abundance of maple oak and elm. I’ve got a buddy who has a former co worker that drops off logs from their county yard where they have their tree clearing drop off.I’m selling firewood as side business to keep me busy as a retiree. I saw this video and I'm sold. I hope there's not as much of a backlog as one of the other viewers posted. But that's not what I am posting for. I see you are quite handy, I myself am a retired fabricator and maintenance Machinist for a south eastern Eastern Massachusetts company and as such I used to use a certain material where metal on metal was a problem.
    Have you considered replacing your roller bearing from under the ram, with a small piece of UHMW? If you are not familiar with it, its used in the food processing industry and its very reasonably priced and you could just make a small block and drill a hole to mount it in place of your current bearing. McMaster Carr sells it in various sizes and shapes.
    Just a suggestion. Great videos btw, keep 'em coming.

    On the 18" red oak and some others, it looks like you have a few goes at it to split. Can you hear that the motor is straining and you back off the ram? Or, is there some kind of torque control / safety or something that automatically backs it off? And, hello from Maine.

    • @BuildALotAcres
      @BuildALotAcres  Před 2 lety

      Some pieces do require multiple hits. It just stalls the flywheels and once they regain inertia you activate the ram again. No damage is done to the machine. They were designed this way. Thanks for stopping by friend.
