Tuff Stuff Alpha Long Term Review

  • The Tuff Stuff Alpha is a fantastic tent that offers all of the advantages of a hard shell roof top tent, with the space of a soft top roof top tent! By folding out, you have a tent that is as large as a California king size mattress, and can still leave your bedding up there!

    I just ordered a Tuff Stuff basecamp trailer and the Alpha tent to go on top. Can't wait to take delivery in about 8 - 10 weeks (trailers are back ordered). The trailer is black and white so I ordered the Alpha tent in black to match, but I do have concerns over the amount of heat it might absorb. Unfortunately they stopped making it in white which was my first choice.Thanks for your reviews - keep up the good work.

    • @RevereOverland
      @RevereOverland  Před 3 lety +1

      Yeah white would be my choice for heat too, but I think it looks a little cheap. I doubt the black is too different from the grey, and it's never been so bad that we've wanted to get up early!

    Great review. Ours comes in a week or two. We got a black alpha with the truck bed rack, annex, and anti moisture mat from Tuff Stuff Overland. We also bought a Jackery Explorer 1000 to power everything for our excursions. It’s going to be fun getting out a lot after staying in the last seven months!

    • @RevereOverland
      @RevereOverland  Před 3 lety

      Awesome! You shouldn't really need the moisture mat, since the base structure helps prevent it. That being said, if the moisture mat covers the hinge, it should help stop it there!

      @@RevereOverland Hey dude we got our alpha. It DOES have the window awnings. They use the same exact tension rods as the main entrance. Pretty hyped. The mattress is super firm. I’m definitely buying a thin cushion to put under me. We camped one night out locally and had a great evening. We connected the tent lights into a Jackery battery. On the lowest setting it only draws 1-2 watts. Pretty good! That won’t even use 1% of our battery if I left it on all night.

    A tip for the spring rods: put the bottoms in first, then flex the top up to the awning.

    • @RevereOverland
      @RevereOverland  Před 3 lety +1

      What’s the reason for that?

    • @kevinstrident
      @kevinstrident Před 3 lety +2

      You wouldn't need to hang one of the poles in the interim, it's easier to get the pole in the hole when it's not under tension, and I've found that doing it the way you are (which is way I did it until just recently) eventually wallows out the hole in the base of the tent.

    • @henrikm4657
      @henrikm4657 Před 3 lety +1

      I’ve tried both ways, and the only downside to doing it the way he did in the video is that there’s a slightly bigger risk of ripping the little slit in the canvas in case the pole slips out of your hand due to the tension.

    • @dezertbomber15
      @dezertbomber15 Před 3 lety +2

      @@kevinstrident glad you pointed this out as I too noticed he was doing it how I too started, then found putting the rods into the holes first allowed me to insert them quicker, seated better in them, and pulling them up to the awning's holes was easier (can insert and remove one handed).

    My iKamper came with slight damage, packaging was crap. That package looks good. Also looks like an carbon copy of the Roofnest, but who knows who copied who. Roofnest did have an issue on the Condor and xlwith the stiffness of the long sides. They sent people reinforcement kits who had v1, v2 had more ribs and a shape change to stiffen up the sides. Good looking tent, it was a tough choice for us. The awning was the one of the tipping points, hearing this is removable is nice. iKamper rolls up, so always there and never in the way.

    • @RevereOverland
      @RevereOverland  Před 3 lety +3

      Yeah the Roofnest appears identical except the awnings and cover. Their cover is about 2 inches slimmer, so it looks a little better, but you also lose some bedding storage!

    • @RevereOverland
      @RevereOverland  Před 7 měsíci

      Just that shell. It started to get tiny cracks from the UV degradation. I've had the iKamper longer and it hasn't had the same issues. The solution would be to get the Tuff Stuff with the aluminum shell. I heard the Tuff Stuff annex has a poor fit - is that something they've fixed?

    How does it fit with your drivers side awning? I am considering this tent with a 270 awning that is larger when stored than a normal awning. I'm afraid I wont be able to mount that kind of awning with this tent on my Prinsu rack. Will an awning that is 9 inches square when stored interfer with this tent opening? Do you have to offset the tent to one side?

    • @RevereOverland
      @RevereOverland  Před 3 lety +1

      My ARB awning tucks underneath the tent when it’s centered. I would imagine a 270 awning wouldn’t work, because the shell of the tent hinges out. You could potentially build brackets to hold the awning away from the tent a little.

    What is the feature you mentioned about the raised height at the back of the hard shell? I don't think you ever clarified in the video what you meant the benefit was, unless you meant the bedding storage, but that would have it all stuffed along the driver side of the tent not along that raised section. Can you please explain why it's higher in the rear since the tent looks identical from front to back, its side to side that seems different.

    • @RevereOverland
      @RevereOverland  Před 3 lety +3

      The raised height at the back just allows more bedding storage. We pile it all on the driver's side, but generally more (like the pillows) at the back end.
