I think this cave actually did something neat with the clock system, since it actually determined the path you could go depending on the time to collect the items needed to make the Shell Bell. It's something I find very unique for an optional area of any game ever.
This is why I love older regions, like Hoenn, so much. Lots of different areas to explore off the main path! The world felt big exploring these locations.
I think what makes Shoal Cave, and Hoenn as a whole different, is that Game Freak was experimenting with world biomes and the limits of the time mechanic. They had ash raining from the sky, a blizzard of sand in the desert, and if they had the disk space, im sure the tides would ebb and flow everywhere in Hoenn. I think Shoal Cave was a proof of concept, and they just never found a way to expand on it. Its very telling that no other region has topped Hoenn in showing the unbridled power of nature itself.
Sinnoh had even more weather conditions.I agree that if they could add more weather they could have added snow.blizzard,mist,etc,but that's what they did in Sinnoh.
Snorunt was my favorite Pokemon as a kid, and I remember the internal battery dying after my Emerald Cartridge went through the laundry. I was so relieved that I could still (and can still) play my game, but I remember the internal clock stopping at 3:56 PM, 4 minutes before the tide recedes, thus cutting me off from finding Snorunt.
@@adamk9652 In every game I've played since the internal clock crashed, I've always set the time for low tide. I've unfortunately missed out on Shell Shells since then, but I feel as though being able to get to the ice form on the bottom floor is always more worth it.

one of the stupidest things you can do if your battery is dry and you start a new game is forget to set up Shoal Cave to low tide,if you miss that,Shoal Cave will be only high tide and Snorunt will be impossible to catch
@@cmbaz1140 is just what i said,if your cartridge battery in R/S/E is dry all timed events won't work and that includes the tides of Shoal Cave,if you set the clock wrong at the start of the game to be low tide you can still get Snorunt in the ice room below Shoal Cave,but if you ended up setting it wrong,is 2 less pokémon for your Pokédex also includes the Nevermeltice item and the Hail TM if i'm not wrong too
I read somewhere that originally Shellos and Gastrodon were suppose to first appear in Gen III, but were cut for time. I believe if they did come in Gen III rather than Gen IV this is where you could have found them
This music was iconic to me, Im not sure why but it made me feel so much despair in a kids game. If you ask me that’s something hard to do in a kids game especially one like Pokémon.
I've played through Hoenn more than any other region and I still have never explored Shoal Cave fully. I'd go in on whatever tide it was, explore a little, leave and never come back. One thing that I thought was weird is that the in game clock was used for this but we couldn't have a day/night cycle in RSE.
What i adore about shoal cave is just that it combines my love of caves with my love of the sea and my love of Ice Types. I just feels like a cozy little corner in my favor region. It's the same reason i like the Seaside Cave in BW2 except this one has the unique tide gimmick, Pokémon i love more with that signature Hoenn mysticism i love so much. I adore the theme that plays because it along with the Cave of Origin theme and abandoned shop/ New Mauville themes embody the grandiose lore of the Hoenn region, which if you can't tell it's my favorite region in the series.
As a kid, I didn't really think too much about the character limitations of the names of items in Pokemon so NEVERMELTICE seemed funny to me because it looked like you have to say it really fast when reading it. Combine that with the early gens' naming convention of having all named things be in all caps makes it seem like you also have to say NEVERMELTICE loudly and with conviction.

Can I just say, I love your Hoenn videos so much! I think the Hoenn games were the last time I ever played a game with that childish sense of wonder and mystery, where the simple sprites let me daydream a vibrant world, and where every location, every detail, made me speculate what could have been. Whenever I'm nostalgic for Pokemon, it's Sapphire and Emerald specifically, and so you making these videos detailing each area lets me relive some of that.
Back in the day I had 2 other friends I played these games alongside. When we got to this part of the map I completely missed this cave had the tide feature and was shocked when they gained a Glalie and the other a Walrein on their team. I was so dumbfounded when they told me the cave had a high and low tide feature that I went back to explore.
I remember trying to complete the dex in ORAS i forgot if Delibird was the one on the list or another one in the cave but happend to bump into a shiny Deli during my run around the region
i remember during my first time playing ruby as a kid i used my master ball on spheal and he became one of my strongest mons later on. loved the little guy
Way back when i played emerald on my gameboy sp, i couldnt beat elite four with my current levels so i went to grind and this damn cave was the grind spot of choice for me for some reason.
Also sticking with the theme of mysterious/wierd locations, you should go over the regi dungeons (if you haven't already) they're reallly interesting imo

A long time ago my Emerald clock battery died, keeping the water level up, and as such i wae literally unable to catch a Snorunt. Thankfully we managed to replace it and I was able for it to drain, but I hate how they locked that pokemon during some specific time
Man i remember discussing with my friends that groudon is there (i played sapphire) and that i had to wait for the right time where the tide is low and it would go back up while i am still inside. Awesome memories

I never explored this area back when Gen 3 was a thing. Aside from the fact that its an optional area, my copy is not a legitimate copy. Its a counterfeit copy. So the time based events are basically non existant. The internet were also in its infancy back then so I didnt know about the time based thing. I just played the game completely unawarr what the time based events does.
The ORAS and SM demos are really cool, and while ORAS were already out when I got to playing it, I remember trying to do daily stuff on the count down to SM's release. Idk if the ORAS Demo has anything transferable then the Mega Galalie, but alongside the Battle Bond Greninja you could transfer, you also got other items, I think a Nugget and a Star Piece were in the list of items transferable, and anything to make money less of a hassle during an in-game playthrough am I right?
Imagine a Hoennian form associated with the area. Like a Hoennian Garganacl that’s Rock and…Water? Ice? Neither of those are good, but idk, I just think that’d be neat. Maybe something we could see in a Legends Jirachi, years from now

Muslim being my favorite starter I always choose Torchic to make Spheal my water type. Plus having them with Ice Bean = GG to dragons
