  • Canon's design decisions around dual pixel raw enables users to use a novel technique that allows them to recover 1 stop of highlight detail from files shot in DPRAW mode. This video covers how to do this, and how it works.
This technique currently works for the 5D mark IV, EOS R, and EOS R5.
You'll need to download and install DPRSplit from LibRaw LLC. It's free, and available for Mac and Windows. You can download it here:www.fastrawviewer.com/DPRSplit

Thanks for the video I have been doing a lot more photography lately. I ended up getting the v1c godox flash. I almost pulled the trigger on one that you suggested. The only reason I pulled the trigger on this was I already have a godox flash and I'm wondering if I'll be able to trigger it with my new one. Figured it was worth a shot.

I think we were all hoping we could do focus pulling from 100m to 1m in post, like would would in real time, lol

So I have a question as usual. I've noticed that most of the files straight from the Canon camera cannot be played on Windows. I have downloaded multiple video codec packs. I can play the videos in premiere but not on any other software in Windows. Not sure if you would know how to mitigate this?

Canon's files use either AVC/H.264 (for standard video) or HEVC/H.265 (for canon log and HDR PQ) video. The former should play without any problem. Windows 10 and 11 don't ship with built in HEVC playback support, but most coded packs should include that. Likewise, if you use a media player like VLC or MPC-BE, that will also include HEVC support.
That said, don't seem to have any problems playing back the HEVC files in the built in windows media players. But I'm not sure if that's the codec pack I have installed (k-lite), or something else I installed in the last 10 years that's making that work.

@@PointsInFocus yeah it is super strange. The file will open up in VLC but the playback is so laggy it's unplayable. I tried playing around with the advanced setting in VLC. I may try the The full Kodak pack from k lite. Kind of strange that windows does not have HEVC playback as a standard. Going to try to get to the bottom of this lol. Thank you for the reply and have a great day

HEVC is encumbered by license costs from the MPEG-LA, so...
Also, my guess is you're also trying to play back 4K Canon Log files too. If so, 4:2:2 chroma subsampled HEVC is only hardware accelerated on Intel 10 Gen and newer CPUs, Intel ARC GPUs, and I think Apple's M1/M2 chips. Everything else has to decode the files in software on the CPU. Unless you're running something very modern and very high end, the combination of high bit-rates and 4:2:2 chroma is something many CPUs struggle with.

@@PointsInFocus Yes it is definitely the log files that are causing the issue then. I have a first generation threadripper from AMD. I am looking into another build next year.

@@PointsInFocus I had a thought about using a Mac mini M2 to edit ProRes files. Now if it's supports HEVC 4:2:2 maybe another reason. I've always been a Windows guy though. I am hearing very good things about video production and rendering on the Apple M2 chip.
