How to remove a mountain bike crank without crank puller tool, x-type Race Face self-extracting

- This video shows how to remove a crank arm without a tool on an xtype Race Face mountain bike crank. The method in this video will not work for all mountain bikes, just those with built-in self extractors.
Bike mechanics already know that with self-extracting cranks, in this case x-type, a crank puller tool is not needed. No tool! Love it. Weekend warriors however commonly remove the integrated puller first, that looks like a dust cap, and then are left staring at a situation that looks like a puller tool is needed. Leave the dust cap in and use it as an integrated puller and you are on your way. - Sport
Thank you from the Very bottom of my heart. my wife will be relieved when the swearing stops.

4 years later and you're still saving the day!!! You are my hero.
THANKS YOU SOO MUCH! I've spent 4 hours messing around with my bike and I'm stuck at this point. After parusing through about 15 videos, all of which were 15 mins plus, finally I found a 2 minutes video, to the point, no BS, no uuuuhhmmm, no list of things I don't want to do, just sweet and to the point..You are the man. THANKS! A MILLION UPVOTES TO YOU SIR(
Im on my second month lmao still waiting for my m20 tap to try the puller again sucks mental health decling rapid lol
And this is why I love You Tube. Thank you very much for posting this. I have been fighting this raceface crank for 45 minutes and was about to go after it with a hammer. Dropped right out, color me thrilled.
My friend you are a LEGEND! I can't even begin to tell you how much time I've WASTED attempting to remove the crank sets on my project bikes, just to absolutely fail. Thank you for this video which is the largest game changer I could have ever imagined watching.
Super helpful thanks! My 10mm extractor cover was damaged (misthreaded and pulled-out). I was able to use the park tool CWP-7 as a emergency fix. On the CWP-7, I unscrewed the small diameter inner and set it aside. Then threaded the larger diameter CWP-7 piece of the tool into the x-type crank to use in place of my damaged 10mm extractor. Worked great after watching the video and realizing how the parts interact to extract the crank. Thanks again!
Much thanks bro! spent an hour feeling like a moron unable to strip my crank.
same here and im more moronic because just 2 years ago i learned how but then forgot..
Nicely done. I saw in another video the detail of the dust cap, but it was not emphasized like you did. Once I saw your video, I went back out put the dust cap back on and, voila!
Thanks.
Thank you so much for posting this! These cranks had me scratching my head too.
Dude...you just saved my ass...I accidentally did this on the LH side but didn't put two and two together, I thought it was just a dust cap and on a new bike done 6 miles thought it was just a slack crank. But when the RH side seemed to strip the threads of the aluminium crank using a conventional octalink puller my heart sank. I put it back together and the "cover" didn't keep turning so tried the 8mm and it pulled off the crank! It's an ebike with a 16t sprocket so no room to tap it off....thanks again, brain reconfigured!
Thank goodness for this vid. My cap was missing so it would never have come out! Lifesaver.
Thanks a lots. ....was about to bring the new bike back to lbs because of creaking sound in the BB....and like you said....removed the "cap". ....and then scratched my head.....
Thanks again Kirk. I completely forgot how I removed the crank previously, which was by watching your tutorial 🥴
Dude this is the best tip, I can't believe it, you are a bloody legend, can't believe it worked. Thanks so much. Thumbs up
3 months of confusion finally ive given in to the researching and you my kind sir are an amazing man thank you
happy to help
thanks! i forgot about how that end cap ring is used to back the arm off the spindel. i will never forget now./// keep end cap in, keep end cap in, keep end cap in, keep end cap in, keep end cap in, keep end cap in, keep end cap in, keep end cap in, keep end cap in, keep end cap in, keep end cap in, keep end cap in, keep end cap in, --there commited to my memory now! a brilliant design.
Thanks for putting this out there, super helpful!
Thanks man! I couldn't find documentation for removal on my manufacturer homepage. It worked perfectly for my Easton EC90 Cinch crankarms.
Thanks man! So simple .... once one knows! 😊👍🏼
Thanks for that, you saved me lot of head scratching
it was bit of a head scratcher, until now. thanx man much appreciated.
Wow thank you this worked great. Thought I was gonna have to buy yet another tool.
Saved me from buying a crank puller!!! Thanks
Awesome video thanks a lot , this video saved me a lot of frustration
Thanks so much i had a damaged dust cover bolt .....it makes sense now how to remove the crankset thank you !
great video
Thank you SOOOOOO much, I couldn't for the life of me figure out how to get them out but I saw this and felt like and idiot hahah
Bro I love you!!!😂😂😂 my puller is useless and I found this!!!
Thanks,I pulled out mine before your video ended.
You leave the cap on?!?! This was a huge help! Thank you Kirk!
Thank you, saved me loads of time :D
I completely forgot this and I was the person who installed the cranks in the first place. Thanks.
Thank you for your help that saved me a lot of time and head scratching
Thank yku so much for posting!
This made my day 🤘
Cheers mate saved me a lot of stress 👍.
Thanks a lot man you saved me this time
Great video Kirk, unfortunately my dust cover(retainer ring) won’t withstand the force of the extractor bolt, and pops out before releasing the crank arm. Damn!
Damn. Thank you. I thought I bent my crank when I grazed a tree trunk with my pedal lol
Thanks kirk. Just whatI needed.
Thank you you’re the man!
thanks guy. quite helpful
does this work for Shimano octalink type bottom bracket?
I was stoked to see this was for a RaceFace crank like mine but then realised mine doesn’t have the smaller internal Allen bolt to go through. Dammit... back to the drawing board!
Thanks Man 💪👍 now I got remove my Race Face easily
Excellent trick.many thanks
Thanks for this. saved me lots of grief
And what if I lost the cap ? IS there any way to dismount it without the extracting tool?
pls help i dont have that self extractor
THANK YOU!!! Luckily I had saved that dust cover in my parts bin.
Cheers... helped loads
Any chance you know what manufacturers part # that crank puller cap is? I seem to have lost it and am unable to currently remove the crank.
If I'm missing the cap will it still work.
Your genius men👍
Will this work on the Raceface Prodigy DH Forged ISIS Drive cranks??
Thank you very much, you saved me
Oh, well, that seems really simple and i figured that, but i ain't got a disk cover. So got any ways for that
So helpful thanks
Perfect thanks!
AMAZING YES THANK YOU!
and what if i dont have a 10mm cap?
Many thanks. Fair play to you.
mine is so tight i can't remove it,
i dont get it. how does it pulls out using the same allen screw to tighten it?
Pushes against the 10mm one
cheers ya legend
hmmm.... I tried this method for the 1st time and it got tighter and wouldn't come off. I removed the "dust cap" off 1st with a 10mm, then removed to inner with an 8mm and it came of easy. I wonder why your method didn't work for me? I'm just glad I got it off, but still wonder......
Still can’t get mine out
Thank you so much
Thank you!
THANKS, I COULDN'T WORK THIS OUT. GREAT HELP!!
Thanks man!
Thanks man
Thanks!
Thanks alot!!
That's all you need to do to replace the chain ring as well then 👍🏻
When trying this, the inner bolt backed all the way out through the puller cap (dust cap) and sheared off its 10mm head leaving the sleeve inside the crank arm covering all the threads. This likely due to crank and spindle stuck together. Now can't put a new puller cap on to retry. 😂
that why ou have to cover all the stuff in WD$= before extracting those cranks. sometimes is like they are welded lol. now you can take out the inner bolt and then cut the rest of the cap with a dremel carefully.
Cheers buddy saved me mashing it with a hammer 🤣
This doesn't work with mine
Thanks! #themoreyouknow
cool!
Are you telling me there are Large # of people with this crank set up ,and have no idea how to remove them?
Quarter million views, I'd say so.
@@kirkearl dam!
@@kirkearl I'm struggling, removing my square bb right now,the crank puller stripped the threads out.I'm not reusing the setup so I can destroy it,if tried heat (Mable not enough) I've tried prybar but nothing. I'm going to cut relief slits in the arms I guess.running down tto the auto parts store is not an option nor is bike shop. Thx
this did not work. There is no inside hex bolt
You must have a different crank that isn't an x-type Race Face. This method is not for all cranks.
sorry I don't
