How to remove a mountain bike crank without crank puller tool, x-type Race Face self-extracting

  • This video shows how to remove a crank arm without a tool on an xtype Race Face mountain bike crank. The method in this video will not work for all mountain bikes, just those with built-in self extractors.
    Bike mechanics already know that with self-extracting cranks, in this case x-type, a crank puller tool is not needed. No tool! Love it. Weekend warriors however commonly remove the integrated puller first, that looks like a dust cap, and then are left staring at a situation that looks like a puller tool is needed. Leave the dust cap in and use it as an integrated puller and you are on your way.

    THANKS YOU SOO MUCH! I've spent 4 hours messing around with my bike and I'm stuck at this point. After parusing through about 15 videos, all of which were 15 mins plus, finally I found a 2 minutes video, to the point, no BS, no uuuuhhmmm, no list of things I don't want to do, just sweet and to the point..You are the man. THANKS! A MILLION UPVOTES TO YOU SIR(

    Super helpful thanks! My 10mm extractor cover was damaged (misthreaded and pulled-out). I was able to use the park tool CWP-7 as a emergency fix. On the CWP-7, I unscrewed the small diameter inner and set it aside. Then threaded the larger diameter CWP-7 piece of the tool into the x-type crank to use in place of my damaged 10mm extractor. Worked great after watching the video and realizing how the parts interact to extract the crank. Thanks again!

    Nicely done. I saw in another video the detail of the dust cap, but it was not emphasized like you did. Once I saw your video, I went back out put the dust cap back on and, voila!

    Dude...you just saved my ass...I accidentally did this on the LH side but didn't put two and two together, I thought it was just a dust cap and on a new bike done 6 miles thought it was just a slack crank. But when the RH side seemed to strip the threads of the aluminium crank using a conventional octalink puller my heart sank. I put it back together and the "cover" didn't keep turning so tried the 8mm and it pulled off the crank! It's an ebike with a 16t sprocket so no room to tap it off....thanks again, brain reconfigured!

    That's all you need to do to replace the chain ring as well then 👍🏻

  • @keithandruthbrooks4616

    When trying this, the inner bolt backed all the way out through the puller cap (dust cap) and sheared off its 10mm head leaving the sleeve inside the crank arm covering all the threads. This likely due to crank and spindle stuck together. Now can't put a new puller cap on to retry. 😂

    • @ShadowlordDio
      @ShadowlordDio Před 5 lety

      that why ou have to cover all the stuff in WD$= before extracting those cranks. sometimes is like they are welded lol. now you can take out the inner bolt and then cut the rest of the cap with a dremel carefully.
