One of my favorites!! The stairs to climb are actually behind the screen (it is very flexible, like a sheet) and he has to push the screen with his body to go up the steps behind the screen, so he REALLY needs to know where exactly every step is, from memory, to do this. If I remember correctly, he fell during a rehearsal, doing one of the jumps, but he did great the actual day of the show. He finished 3rd, but he won the public vote (so he was number one for the public)

Other thing to mention - Australia won Jury vote that year. But both Russia and Australia had contrasting scores for Jury/Public, which made them gain less points than Ukraine, who did pretty much second best in both Jury and the Public, ultimately giving them the win. And to be fair - 1944 was the correct song to go with that year.
Sergey's song was kinda bad, majority of the score really coming from the overblown staging (which thank God we are over that era) and Public unfortunately wouldn't have Australia win pretty much right after they joined. Sound of Silence was still my favourite, but it was also kinda a shallow song.

With regards to your question about stage design, LED and lightning: the host broadcaster is responsible for the physical stage design and which lights are to be used and stuff. Each artist is from a different country and is supported by their own national broadcaster. Each national broadcaster is responsible for everything from their artist's performance: the host broadcaster will provide them with schematics (i.e. size of the LED wall and floor) so the national broadcaster can design whatever needs to be shown on the LED screens. They will tell the host broadcaster what to do with lightning. The national broadcaster even determines camera movements, fireworks and pyro technics stuff and the host broadcaster will make it happen. It depends on the national broadcaster's budget (they'll have to pay for fireworks and stuff but also man hours for the host broadcaster's light technicians, for example). Each artist can have props on stage. Between songs there are 1 minute postcards to introduce next artist. That's when the host broadcaster quickly changes everything on the set. ESC is like a military operation: planned for every single second.

The quality of the camera work (and the contest overall) varies a lot depending on who hosts it. This performance was in Eurovision in Stockholm 2016. The year before, it was in Vienna Austria, and the camera work was bad. In the winning performance (by Sweden), you can see the cameraman by accident several times. You see him running for his life with the camera. Kind of embarrassing but mostly just hilarious.
The performance I'm talking about is "Heroes" by Måns Zelmerlöw, from the grand final 2015.

The winner in 2015 was Måns Zelmerlöw with the song "Heroes". His performance was new:ish for Eurovision (but not new in the world of music video and staging) and after winning it was inevitable that a fair number of performances would lean into the same type of music.

Haha, your faces! This was everyones face back in 2016! He brought choreography and vocals to a performance that was pulled off superbly! Russia really had some creative ideas with their performances. This one was inspired by the winner from the previous year....Swedens Måns Zelmerlöw with 'Heroes', but they took it beyond anything that Måns did. Unreal.
In the rehearsals, i remember he fell off the back of the wall and was taken to hospital, but he was okay and delivered an amazing performance at the ESC finals.
He was beaten to the punch by both Ukraines Jamala, and Australian Dami Im (who delivered one of the best vocals of any Eurovision performance!). If you havent reacted to Dami Im, please react to her performance....her vocals are stratospheric!

Here’s my list of suggestions for your next Eurovision week - the 1990s at Eurovision!
Some context for the 90s at esc - all music was done by live orchestra and up until 1999 the representatives from each country had to sing in one of their official languages. I’ve put the English titles in brackets in my list.
    1. Dinle (listen) - turkey 1997 - 3rd place
    2. Ooh aah, just a little bit - uk 1996 - 8th place
    3. Hajde da ludujemo (let’s go crazy) - Yugoslavia 1990 - 7th place
    4. Vuelve conmigo (come back to me) - Spain 1995 - 2nd place
    5. Mama Corsica - France 1993 - 4th place

With the stage, you're right, it's set and that doesn't change but the acts can dress it how they see fit for the performance and pick what goes on the screens and what lights to use. In the last few years, stages have become a lot more adaptable with moving LED walls, so they can be configured differently for different acts or rotate to just have a wall of lights. Liverpool IMO probably made the most of the adaptability of the stage, resetting multiple times through the performances sometimes. Israel 2019 also made good use of this as well. I can't remember other years off the top of my head...

This song was also part of the most politically charged final in the history of Eurovision!!! Thunder and lightning!! This was the year after the Russian invasion of Chrimea and Ukraine send a song about the Russian invasion of Chrimea, but the one that happened in 1944. (Song was called 1944) It ended up being Russia and Ukraine in the top two and because of new voting rules it was impossible to know who had won until the very final score was revealed. Ukrain ended up beating Russia and the intesity of that moment was unmatched anywhere!

The producing TV-company builds a stage and have experts who in collaboration with each competing entry designs a stage show. You can bring your own stuff but there are limits. For example you have only allowed to hang a limited weight from the ceiling. And all countries aren't as skilled in the art of producing and filming and ESC show. This it is in Sweden, so it is going to be good! The stage is a bit different than it is usally so it's gonna be interesting. But I trust SVTs skills!

Any other year this performance would have won by a landslide, and it nearly did in some areas, if not for 2 factors:
    1. People were FURIOUS with Russia for invading Crimea, and the Ukrainian entrant sending a song about past Russian atrocities drew a lot of sympathy (and votes away from Sergey)

This is inspired by the previous year's winner
    Heroes by Måns Zelmerlöw
which used Video walls interactively successfully.
The problem for this song was that Russian aggression
against Ukraine and its occupation of the Crimea
    two years earlier
    left bad feelings towards Russia
and sympathy for Ukraine who won this competition.

all this is cool, but after many years I don’t understand how a show overloaded with special effects is connected with the meaning of the song? Why these wings, why these squatting figures and raised arms? It seems that Sergey Lazarev wanted, in addition to a very good song, to attract attention and voices with a separate production. But there is no connection between them and it was a fatal mistake, it seems to me
