** A rare cab ride! Join Steve Lee in the cab of Challenger 3985 on Cajon Pass. Union Pacific has retired Challenger 3985, but we can relive some of her best moments captured on video - like this trip! See some of the monuments of Cajon Pass, like Mormon Rocks, from the cab. And journey through tunnels 1 and 2 - both are now daylighted. Enjoy!
Join Railfan Depot's DeAnn, a railfan herself, every Sunday morning for "Coffee & Trains". Check out the Sunday Morning Coffee & Trains playlist: rfd.video/SMCAT

Ah, love the sounds of that amazing machine built 85 years ago. It's interesting that UP could use these 4-6-6-4's alone on Sherman Hill and the Wasatch Mountains East of Ogden. I had no idea Cojon was such a steep grade. SP must have had 2 or 3 of their biggest locomotives to pull freight. Thanks again for your content.
Mark, you are most welcome! Thank *you* for watching. Cajon is not only a steep grade, but the curves add to what I am going to call (not scientifically) the "effective grade". Just like the grade, curves add resistance to the trains - and Cajon is pretty much nothing but curves. 😀 - DeAnn
3985 is actually 80 years old. Built in 1943.
My name is Uncle Ariel Ethan Mermaid. HI there.
I wish Union Pacific would run that trio of beautiful E9’s more often. I think they look much more appropriate behind the steam locomotives than the more modern diesels
Nothing like vintage steam, be it Locomotives, Ships or Stationary Power. Thanks for posting.....
If it runs on steam, it's almost as if it's alive! At the State Fair here in Indiana, I enjoy seeing the steam tractors too. Thanks for watching! -DeAnn
@@Railfandepot For efficiency diesel beats steam any day, but for looks and the sound diesel can't even come close.
Awesome , rite on time...still had some coffee left...
Love learning. Thank you
Brew up some coffee for this Sunday too! Thank you for joining me... and watching! -DeAnn
I’m having so much fun watching Challenger’s rebuild progress at the museum, it feels like she’s bringing communities together to bring her back to life again. Individuals are traveling from other states to volunteer their time, skills & tools, apprentices in trade programs, youth to elders, there’s something deeply special in Challenger’s “rebuild 2.0” this time around❤ Thank you so much for doing an episode on 3985!
The UP 3985 Challenger is my favorite steam engine, just above the Norfolk & Western J611. Thank you Deanna for bringing it to us this week. See you next Sunday! 🚂
You are *most* welcome. Thank you for watching. I hope we can bring you 611 soon, although I don't know if we have any in-cab footage for 611. THAT would be GREAT! :-) -DeAnn
Man...I love this machine !! !! !!
It *is* an easy machine to love! (I do too!) Thank you for watching! - DeAnn
That was an interesting and enjoyable video. Steam engines truly are a living, breathing, wonder!!! Thanks for posting.
Glad you enjoyed it! I agree with you. A diesel is interesting and powerful, but a steam engine is a living thing! Just watch it trackside to see it's gait and how it breathes. 😍 - DeAnn
All I can say is, Awesome!✌
Ed, I agree! Being in the cab, heading up Cajon Pass is crazy awesome. -DeAnn
In the mid-'90s, a fellow reactor operator at the Diablo Canyon nuclear powerplant was train manager on a 3985 trip between Omaha and SoCal. This looks like his train! Steve was an excellent operator at Diablo, a bit gruff at times, and we never saw him smile like the way he did during that 3985 run!
Great to hear! He’s my dad!
13:44 oh man, the sound in that tunnel
Those Sante Fe Warbonnets bring back good memories, too!
Great video, the trains look great!
Thank you very much! I love watching a steam train from the cab. Thanks for watching. -DeAnn
Passed the super chief with white freightliner climbing this hill to the big desert. She went by us like we were up on jacks up on the desert.
Boa noite, um show de trens espetaculares viagens emocionantes. Gostei do vídeo.
When I watch these videos then think back and kinda dream what it must’ve been like 80+ years ago living around major cities that had rail yards extra and the constant sound of steam locomotives and their steam whistles sounding in the background day and night, it must’ve been awesome.
I’m so glad you’re back! Love the video! 🚂
I am sooooo glad to be back! And so glad you're back to watch us! Thank you for watching. 😀 -DeAnn
10:54 the exhaust sounds great here
Thanks for posting! That’s my dad Steve Lee at the helm, love seeing him in his element!
Cool! Steve’s a legend! I hate he retired, but the program seems to be in good hands with Ed Dickens now.
No, you are not. Liar just trying to get attention
@@1530f you poor thing. Yes, he is indeed my dad. AMA
