2020 KTM 890 Duke R Review

  • The 890 Duke R is an absolute ripper of a motorcycle. I’ve always been a fan of middleweights for giving the Goldilocks amount of power, and the recipe KTM whipped up for the 890 is spot on. Having it accessible so early on, and in such smooth, linear fashion just sweetens the deal. In short, it goes, stops, and turns in a way that invites you to push a little more. It brings out every hooligan instinct in you, with the electronics safety net to save your bacon.

I really like your style of reviewing, sir. Enthusiasm shines through clearly, we're still given facts and numbers, but in a laid back way - maybe it's just me, but I feel so catered to. "This guy clearly knows his stuff, but he doesn't try to sound clever - he's just a happy dude who gets to ride bikes, and he's someone I'd grab a beer with after a ride" - I really appreciate that. Thanks.

Well isn't that refreshing, someone saying something nice on CZcams. Thanks! But really, I appreciate the comment. I'm a very lucky guy who's been fortunate enough to ride all kinds of different motorcycles for a living. I don't take how lucky I am for granted and I hope what little knowledge I have about bikes comes through in these videos. Cheers!

I did the same. My old bike was a Ducati Monster 821 and the 790 was not enough. The 890R is perfect bike for me I think. Fast and agile, enough power, adjustable suspension and acceleration what I expect I haven't ridden it yet though. Could be wrong, but I don't think so.

I LOVE my 890 Duke R. In my fifty years of riding it is by far the finest machine I have ever thrown a leg over. It has connected me to my inner hooligan: Perfect brakes and torque everywhere, and the Akrapovic silencer I ordered when I purchased the machine looks and sounds great. Definitely not for touring but probably the best instrument ever devised for hooning around.

Nah 790 owners aren't pissed at the 890R ... sure it's a slightly better bike - but for a significant increase in cost ... and it still doesn't have fully adjustable forks (no preload) and doesn't come with the full electronics package as stock (have to pay a further £650 / $750 for the 'tech pack'). I'm very very happy with my 790 - brand new it cost me £3,000 less than an 890R with the tech pack included!! 😊

if you plan on doing lots of track days and have the skills to exploit the extras that it offers then go for the 890R .... if you're not planning on track days then the 790 already offers more than enough for the large majority of road riders 😉

Nice work Troy! This thing would be a right scalpel! Some of the other U.S. reviewers have reported a buttery smooth transmission though you weren't impressed. Is this a luck of the draw thing or are you just better at your job? Also, just between you and me would most riders be quicker through those awesome canyons on the 890 instead of the 1290?

As much as I'd like to say I'm better at my job than the other US journos, that's simply not the case. I know most of those folks, I'm friends with most of them, and they are all excellent riders. I think it was just an issue with the particular bike I was on.

Awesome review. Just aquired the 790 Duke last year and it looks like the 890 has taken everything one step further. Wish I could have the 890 now, but pricing in Australia not the cheapest, basic price doesn't include track package and quick shifter. So my 790 is a keeper, love it too bits! Other than the annoying leaks here and there.

It would be interesting to see this tested against a 1290 SDR. I bet on the roads in the test their would be very little in it( unless your a pro racer with a death wish!!). You would be nowhere near as intimidated and would be hitting braking zones easier and using all the handling, grip rather than being glad you haven’t died yet on the1290.
I’ve ridden the 790 and 1290 and both are impressive so I bet this is a great bike.

You still have to pay for the dlc (track pack, quick shifter, blipper etc...) as the beast and at least you know it really is an upgrade especially since the beast is 90% completely revamped.
