- Listen as Nell Carter of 'Gimme a Break' sings Let's All Be There for over four minutes during a Sept. 1984 Fall Preview show. As cheesy as it gets!
I also added a video version of it. Lots of unusual sights like fireworks-filled peacocks and Ed Begley, Jr. Somehow I can't picture him at an event like that.

They don’t do shows like this anymore...
They don't have that quality of talent anymore.
The long-gone days of network pride.
Noticed that during the 80's Nell was the face and voice of NBC, I don't think any of the other shows had a singer like her! She shud have owned the network because she was their finest!
With the possible exception of *Hair* director Milos Forman, Brandon Tartikoff is the only person in Hollywood who seemed to know what to do with either her or Joel Higgins from *Silver Spoons.* If they hadn’t canceled that show when they did, they could’ve done a duet on “Come Home to NBC” for 1986. I guess she could’ve done that duet with ALF.
Very True
Dear God, please let the master tape for this still exist.
NBC, let's all be back in 1984. TV was awesome in 1984. Cheers, Cosby Show, Hill Street Blues, Fame, daytime game shows, Johnny Carson and David Letterman, Friday Night Videos... some people may bash this preview special and jingle for being cheesy and over the top, but this campaign got people watching NBC. And NBC spent the next 15 years at the top of the ratings. God bless NBC in 1984, and God bless Nell Carter.
Even Saturday Morning Cartoons
That was when they were starting to put it all together, and dominated not only till the end of the decade, but also well into the next. NBC was an absolute juggernaut. You can tell the quality of a network by its depth. NBC had shows night after night that were packing in the ratings, plus late night, daytime, and the NFL made them almost unbeatable. Think of CBS in the 60s and well into the mid 70s. That kind of dominance.
Those were the days of truly fantastic television. So many classic shows are represented here. Nell Carter was a beautiful person inside and out. And she had a gorgeous voice to boot!! She passed away far too young at 54. I always loved the way Nell interpreted a song. She put her whole heart and soul into it and truly "felt" the words as she was singing them and drew the listeners into the song with her. I will always miss Nell. She was truly one of a kind!!❤️❤️
Nell Carter just gets me every time I hear this. She had such soul. And this was her brief slimmed down period of the 1980s, she looked FABULOUS and what a dancer! She boosted the energy in that room 500%!
Nell Carter left us too soon.
God, how we miss your timeless and graceful voice Nell. You are so missed.
Nell looked (and sounded) fabulous here! I remember this song. This is back during a time when NBC really cared about promoting its whole family oriented tv programing. Cheesy? Perhaps. Fun? Definitely. And it worked. We tuned in and we were there!
God! I miss nell Carter. May you rest in peace. She was a part of my childhood in the 80s.
I love how the phrasing of the N B C are the actual notes of the network call sign built into the song
Nell Carter. God rest her soul, that woman had quite a set of pipes!!! :-)
She Had A Wonderful Singing Voice!!!!!!
There must be a high quality print of this amazing performance out there!

If heaven has a chorus, you can bet she's the director!
When tv was great
Nell was awsome a great singer. Those were great shows back then.
All these shows were great
This will never get old.
A second, please?
Nell was like, "Lemme go out here and take these folks to church with this corny @$$ jingle" lol
After coming off a season where just about every single new series was canceled, NBC had only one direction to go. It would take them another year, but the network finally hit the number one spot during the 1985-1986 season. This was really the beginning of a new era for NBC as many of their newer shows from the 1982-1983 season had finally started to catch on as well as their biggest hit of this season, The Cosby Show.
A TRUE THESPIAN !!
When Nell calls the cast of Cheers, notice a very young Kelsey Grammer is on the left as that was the season he debuted as Dr. Frasier Crane.
This is when the Peacock was PROUD
Love this vid, but we need a higher resolution upload.

I'm sure Ed Begley, Jr. enjoys a good time just like most people. He seems like a fun guy in his interviews. What I think is really neat is that his costar Bill Daniels is sitting next to him and Ed Flanders is behind them and they both jump up and start cheering too when Nell signals out St. Elsewhere. Daniels and Flanders are both guys I always think of as being very subdued, but you can tell they're both having a grand old time at this party.☺️☺️
lol I miss shit like this
It certainly doesn't get cheezy. The tune transitions into more of a gospel style.
Love it
I saw the Proud peacock on the wall in the hallway in a "Saturday Night Live" Five-Timers Club monologue skit with Justin Timberlake.
She was truly one of a kind! ❤️❤️
I want see a clear version

Wish the quality was better.
It would be great if the picture wasn't blurry.
I've seen each and every single episode of Gimme A Break!, and Highway to Heaven. I've also seen Poison Ivy with Family Ties' Michael J. Fox and The Facts of Life's Nancy McKeon. All which aired that season on NBC.
@listner90
When I was proud of the peacock. :/
@Juliaflo
I agree that NBC (like most networks) has gone way downhill in the past few years. In my opinion, the end of "Mad About You" was the beginning of the end of decent TV! However, in my opinion, "Parenthood" is something to look forward to on NBC.
I need this whole show for the bit where Conrad Bain talks about It's Your move! Anyone have any ideas???
Outstanding.
Now that ER is gone, what is there to look forward to?
Wasn't Nell WONDERFUL!
What happened to the sound?
@Smartboy8877 This is why I say: "Oobily goobily sis-boom-bah. I love CZcams, rah, rah, rah".
Juliaflo, we have a double dose of reality tv look foward to. LOL. Stuff on VH1 and MTV. Lord help them if they air actual music videos. LOL.
