Amber, you are so sweet and smart!😊 I'm so happy that you're really getting to understand what really was happening during the 60's and 70's. It IS important for your generation to know this history. Especially with the way things are right now. Your generation needs to take the torch now, and carry the message of peace and love into the future!!☮❤💛💚 Love ya, girl!!😘

Jay & Amber really hit it on the head. Thank you for acknowledging that the 60/70's generation changed the world. What Alvin Lee is singing about came to pass, nobody was saying this out loud until then. It sounds so simple and true and easy to understand to you, but at the time just singing this was revolutionary.

Extra points, Jay, for correct use of the word groovy! :) This song is amazing when you stop to really listen. Alvin Lee said in an interview that the chorus was a serious statement. He didn't want to take a political position and in his words "almost didn't put the song forward" as a result. He knew he wasn't smart enough to solve all the worlds problems so it's up to us all to do it. This song has it all, great guitar work, great musicality, an important social statement, and it's got a great groove!

My husband and I are Baby Boomers. We grew up in times of wars, revolutions, assinations and the music of the times was there to help us deal with the pain and help us reflect on how we could bring peace and love in the middle of it all.
Boundaries were changed and the music helped to make that happen and move forward with change.
Definitely an unforgettable part of our lives..we lived through it all.
People like you 2 learning, through music, about what we went through will keep us alive after we're gone.

He was dubbed "the fastest guitar in the West", and there was no questioning that! Sadly, he died 10 years ago, and us old fan really miss getting new stuff from him.

The sentiment, "I'd love to change the world but I don't what to do, so I leave it up to you" is why we have so many problems in our world. Everyone expects others to do the work to change the world when it takes everyone who cares.

You're so right Amber! You two are both so genuine and so lovable. Here I am a 63 year old man (today is my birthday actually), and when I don't check in with RSR I feel like something is missing in my day. Music has always been a big part of my life, and I know 98% of the music that you react to, but it takes me back emotionally to the first time I heard these songs for myself! I laugh when you laugh, I cry along with you when you cry... you create this wonderful connection for all your subscribers that's addictive. I feel like your my dearest friends! It's maybe a little crazy, but I know this is true for apparently 400,000 people now! Relationships (for sure) are not always easy, but I sure hope that the two of you are honestly as in love with each other as you seem to be. You deserve this success. Just look at the hatred we have in this world. You probably don't even realize the magnitude of true goodness you spread to the (apparently) whole world. You're not going to run out of great music, or the stories behind the artists. I feel that I'm a better (a little bit anyway, Lol) and happier person to have you as a part of my life. You guys are great! I love you. Don't stop.

  • @IZZY_EDIBLE
    @IZZY_EDIBLE Před rokem +4

The lyrical brilliance of this tune lies in this:
Yes, it faces all the cultural and societal struggles of the late-60s & early 70s, but the narrator will do nothing to better the world.
Dude's helpless and hopeless, don't know what to do - so he leaves it up to you.
A lot of us feel resigned in our comfortable lives.
I feel that I'D LOVE TO CHANGE THE WORLD is written from a selfish POV, from a character unwilling to do the hard thing to make the planet better.
The real message of hope is the subtext. When we relate to our narrator, we expose our own pessimism.
It's a song that challenges us to confront our worst selves. And that is Dylan-level songwriting.
Then Alvin Lee gives this poetry that incredible vocal, and on top of all that, Alvin is one helluva guitar player!
And Ten Years After is incredible!

Amber's comments were on the mark. People say the 60's hippies/ flower children sold out & that's how we got the 80's. But the message is still there. We did change the world.

What's great is the stop-start theme of the verses, as if he was getting THE idea to change the world, then thought better of it : "I don't know what to do"

  • @yesterdayproductions1019

Alvin Lee was known as the fastest gun around. In other words, he could play notes so very fast in perfect time & nail every one of them. He had a pretty good voice too & his bad is very good. They had to be to keep up with his guitar. LOL

I never got to see Ten Years After, but in 1978, four years after they disbanded, Alvin Lee formed Ten Years Later. Shortly after, in May of that year, I saw them at Winterland in San Francisco at the KSJO radio 10 year anniversary show. The full lineup was Sammy Hagar, Alvin Lee and Ten Years Later, Hoodoo Rhythm Devils and High Wire Radio Choir. Hagar was the headliner, and he had guests Neil Schon from Journey, Eddie Money, and Jimmy Lyons play a few songs with him. Ten Years Later was pretty darn good, with Alvin Lee playing his guitar just as fine as his Ten Years After days. You can see their whole set, it's available here on CZcams. Most Winterland concerts in those days were recorded on video (B&W), they always had the camera about 20 feet front center from the stage. I was standing a couple of feet to the left of the camera for this show, so I got basically the same view of the show as you see in the video.

Here’s an interesting story for you. After a music critic said of Alvin Lee and Ten Years After that they would never be in the top 40 because they didn’t have the talent, Alvin Lee responded by writing this song. Now, here we are 50 years later, still listening to one of the greatest rock songs ever written. Alvin Lee also said in an interview that he writes music that he loves and not Music to be popular

As far as TYA try some of there jazzier stuff like Me And My Baby or their Undead album which features WoodChopper's Ball as well as Going Home. They were really an eye opener when We first saw them at the Fillmore West in probably 1968....it was before Woodstock. The show included Jethro Tull and Spirit which are two other groups you may also enjoy.

There was a stand-up comedian in the 80s (can't remember who, not a huge name) did a bit about this song. He sang "I'd love to change the world" then "But I don't know what it wears". Not really all that funny, but for some reason it has stuck with me all these decades later, and whenever I hear this song, that bit pops into my head. Lol.

If he played in the US my dad was there. He actually got a chance to meet him and shake his hand. My dad was the only house security guard to cover Alvin Lee's dressing room when he came to Houston in 1986 or 87. Sadly he died before I got a chance to see him live, but my dad still has the guitar pick and his autograph on the Greatest Hits Album on vinyl. Plus he has a picture of the two of them. It's one of his most valuable possessions. Been listening to his albums with my dad and then my own boys growing up too. They love him. They are 20 and 18 rn.

Pretty cool story if you ask me.

Your appreciation for music of this era and for those of us who were alive during it is really touching. For some reason, I started listening to music reactors during the pandemic and I didn't really know why I was drawn to it, but I realized after a while that I was witnessing young people learning history through music, not just about the music itself but about the times the music was made in. It has given me some hope, for instance, that a number of reactors have spontaneously, without being told, arrived at the conclusion that the seventies were a more peaceful, gentler time. (And I know that not everything about the seventies was peaceful. Latin America was plagued by fascist torture-dictatorships, for one thing.) One reactor could even tell that through the sound of a Led Zeppelin song. Then, that realization prompts people to go and learn more about that era, but to see people, young people, sensing the spirit of the times and of society through music, without being instructed about it, has just been really amazing.
