Also consider the quality of tech using the tool. I have a number of these kits, they are terrible quality when compared to OEM. However I can make them work because I’m not a complete dolt. Now some of the guys in this business will just impact the fixture on, do the job, rip the tool off and throw on ground. Now that became a 1 time tool for sure.
Out here in South Dakota, the local snap on dude went out of business. So, my dealer in Seattle has helped get my shop equipment for my business. Keep posting videos on where techs can get tools that are good deals. You helped me out a lot thanks for all the videos over the years.
When the tech was locking the crank with the bad threads, that’s the tech’s fault. You have to check if it’s locked and when I am locking the crank I usually have to rotate it back and forth to get it in there properly
I have a couple from Orion motor tech and betool. Holding up okay so far but they're my personal ones and I don't loan them out to other techs.
Most times you get what you pay for. Good info Mike.
I’ve bought some from Amazon when I need it fast but I typically order a good one to have if it’s something I feel like I’ll use enough
This is the benefit of being at the dealer. Especially a small dealership. We have all of Honda’s specialty tools and plenty that have never even been used that are outdated, but they’re always there if we ever need them
Tools like this are for the, like you said, one time diy person. They do the job and your off to the races. Not intended for professional long use
I have that same kit for 1.4l timing set works perfect every time never had it bend or flex before must be a user issue
The "special tool problem" is that we need so many special tools. I'm grateful that they're only like $20-40, but it's ridiculous that so many engines need so many timing tools. I have like 10 sets in my collection now. Imagine if an electrician needed a different $40 specialty screwdriver if he's replacing a Leviton light switch and a different $40 specialty screwdriver if it's a Lutron.
In addition to those that I have, I did a Ford 1.5L a month ago, and the kit that was supposed to fit the Ford 1.5L didn't fit. My kit has the same tool that Prodemand said, same tool that I saw on youtube as 15 different guys did timing belts on this engine, same tool that Ford dealer techs initially told me I needed. But mine wasn't right, this car had a different exhaust cam phaser. Ended up borrowing it from a Ford dealership 2 cities over (the local one wouldn't share). They sent an OTC tool, and the number on the tool doesn't exist anywhere - OTC's website doesn't list it, Ford Rotunda won't ship it until Nov 11th now (it was August 30th when I was looking), aftermarkets like Summit/etc don't seem to carry it, or if they do it isn't in stock. Ebay had a couple for $400+. And that tool is absolutely required when replacing the cams, phasers, head gasket, or the timing belt (option for the belt unless you want to remove the 3 part valve cover, vacuum pump, and fuel pump - which pays like 6 hours more book time). The tool is 303-1774 if you're interested.
The only reason precision is that important in these tools is because they're too damn stupid to put pins or keys on sprockets now. All of these kits would be pointless if they were keyed.
I have got the John Deere tools and they are identical to the dealer service guard tools
I bought a $19 cam gear holder when I did a timing belt and water pump on a pt cruiser and it worked great. Maybe got lucky.
I got a Ford Mod timing Amazon kit. Have only used the shop one once kept the unused 1 for myself
I have found what brands you can trust. They cost a little more but are still way cheaper. Most of the amazon tools will save you a ton even if you have to replace several times unless you are using them every week
Ive never had much luck with the cheap specialty tools lasting more than once or twice... you definitely pay for what you get!
Bought an Astro pneumatic ball joint kit from Amazon, done numerous ball joint and u joint jobs with them, no problems at all. Anymore, all your tools, no matter Matco, Snap on, or Amazon, will be Chinese.
No my snap on is 100% made in USA and it’s gonna out last any Chinese one
@waterloo123100 "assembled in the USA". I assure you, all it's circuit boards, components, and LED screens were made in either Taiwan or China
Astro supplies the tool trucks, mainly Matco. It’s the other Chinese copies of Astro and like products that you need to be wary of.
Wild you just make up your own reality and believe it
@@JOMaMa.. Astro is a solid company. Produce a lot of stuff with exclusivity to Matco.
Happy Friday (:
ford timing chain with the water pump was timed 2 teeth out with this kit . never will do it again i really thought it was timed right,
How come the tool truck companies don’t make any timing tools? It’s like all they want to do is sell basic hand tools now. When I used to buy from them, if it wasn’t basic hand tools, they would just buy from Amazon and resell.
I wouldn’t buy any car part on Amazon. Tools? Very few. Amazon de sometimes. , for German tools.
Are they great, no. Can they work, yes. 1.4 dodge, used it 1 time. Prob never use it again. It was around $20 though
Amazon is like harbor freight
Far worse
Charge customer for tool cheap enough
Quality of these tools isn't always great, that said most don't get used often enough to warrant a tool 10x as much....and if u end up using one enough to wear it out replace it with a quality tool
They're great tools for the price. You just need to modify them if capable. You're supposed to quench it and then temper it. Actually the only real problem of a chinese tool kit would be a bad alignment. If the set is aligning the engine as it should be , then you only need to heat treat the metal by first quenching it to harden the metal and then tampering it to return some toughness into the carbon steel. Of course you can buy the dealer tool which is 5-10 times more expensive. Or if you have a good machine shop around you they can do the whole process for a fraction of the price. This is if you don't want to explore other fields and techniques, and like to just be turning wrenches and watch at computer data and oscilloscope signals all day long. Man , auto repair industry is becoming boring.
Shop owner buying timing tools? LMAO
I've had to ship numerous jobs because tools would cost more than I'd get paid for the job.
Scamazon has some serious junk
Snap on is garbage
