They designed this intro pretty well. The SNES can only ever have 1 unique Mode-7 layer on-screen at any one time, so they had to cheat a bit. The Kirby at 0:05 doesn't appear until the Nintendo/Halken logo is _completely_ off-screen. At 0:06, there's a black transition because they had to change the perspective and couldn't do so live without needing more than 1 7-layer. And then Kirby is a sprite, while the Mode-7 layer is the ground, then Kirby's back to Mode-7 after the grass is off-screen as well. Whole thing perfectly choreographed while still looking good.

I'm no expert on SNESDev, but Mode 7 only allowed for affine transformations of a background, meaning.. well, _flat_ . unless you use pre-drawn scaled sprites (a la _Super Mario Kart_ and _F-Zero_ ), there's no way to do anything that transforms alongside the background. anyone feel free to correct me, as I may be incorrect.
