Fish - Little Man What Now (from 'A Parley With Angels' EP)

  • This was one of the first lyrics I completed for the ‘Weltschmerz’ album during a period of intense self-reflection while recovering from surgery last year. I was inspired by the 1933 novel of the same title by the famous German writer Hans Fallada which was written about a young couple desperately trying to survive the harsh economic depression at that time in a society that was raging and in turmoil. I applied my own take and created my own ‘Little Man’ who was struggling to come to terms with his life; the heartaches, betrayals, the constant battle against his own inner demons and inherent weaknesses that seem to take him down at every turn. It’s about an eternal fight in which he refuses to surrender in but questions his involvement every day. I wanted a broody dark atmosphere in the song that suggested 1930’s Germany and the addition of Egbert Derix’s string arrangement together with David Jackson’s magnificent saxophone performance provided a cinematic feel that fitted perfectly with what co-writers Steve Vantsis and Robin Boult and producer Calum Malcolm and I had envisaged. It’s my favourite song on ‘Weltschmerz’ so far.

This man ( Fish is the same age as myself ) has been part of my life since the day i discovered Marillion, all those years ago. I like many others, don't want the big man to stop doing what he does best, giving us great pleasure with his music. But I know how i feel having worked for the last 40 years and would like to call it a day, just like Fish. I don't want him to stop, but we can't deny the man his retirement, he has earned it.

    Little Man What Now?
    Fish
    He deliberates the night
To convince himself the fight's worth winning
At the end of every day, he just wants to walk away, and give in
Embrace the dark, and curl up in his bed, the curtains drawn
Shut out the light, and prays his sleep is deep and long
So he forgets the things he did and hasn't done
The guilt that thrives, and fills the empty spaces in his mind
The cut-out work that's frayed, that he has left yet another time
The words deserved to be spoken, when his tongue was tied
The truths that were too difficult became easy lies
In a world which if he's honest, he'd be glad to leave behind
If his heart would just stop beating and he was only less alive
So little man what now, little man what now?
When the weak can only whimper, and the strong assert their claim Cowards thrive and prosper, once brave men shy away
From straight-backed moral duty, desert the higher call
And eloquently mumble as the ignorant shout them down
Backed into a corner, humbled by the might of greed
And market forces of the privileged who cite
    Well little man what now?
    Tangled up and tangled down
    Your thoughts are strangled tight
The creeping knotweed, tearing down your castle and its towers
All your hopes and all you did believe
The mortar crumbles, the stones dislodged
The rooms now darkened, the ceiling falls
    He awakes with trembling hands
To break the crust of dried out tears from swollen eyes
Trying to recall just who it was, or what he'd lost that made him cry
The only thing that's making sense is the here and now
With the how's and why's just meaningless asides
He can't seem to find a way to focus on the day, he's overwhelmed
He just can't wait for hours to pass to crawl back into night
He picks at daydreams with the food he hardly stomachs
    Drowned in wine
The TV silent, the images up loud
He registers the heartbreak without a sound
With all the grace that he can muster, the emotion he allows
He entertains the dizzy headiness of flight
But he's grounded by what he cannot leave behind
He's scared by possibilities, by matters out of his control
He's only ever faced the world with his back against the wall
And the voices in the background, the voices in his mind ask
    Little man what now?
    Well, little man what now?
Tangled up and tangled down, your thoughts are strangled tight
The creeping knotweed tearing down your castle and its towers
All your hopes and all you did believe
Tangled up and tangled down, inevitable tendrils slowly twisting
Cutting out the light from nascent hopes and seedling dreams
    Naïve persistence
You slash and burn ,you cut and run, the creeping knotweed
    The miserable Fear!

I used to be able to remember all the Script..and Fugazi..LP lyrics (even wrote them all from memory at work in the early 80s whenever I was bored) but it's more difficult now. Still love to be 'in the moment' with his tracks though. This is epic. ❤️

I saw him at Manchester Apollo in the early 90s. It was near Christmas so you can imagine what the atmosphere was like.😃 The gig in Carlisle was at The Brickyard, I believe, maybe about 10 years ago? The time flies so quickly now I lose track of it. I've lived in Carlisle since 2005 but I'm from Blackpool originally.
I agree about his new stuff. It instantly takes me back to when he fronted Marillion. I saw them a few months ago (with H, obviously) in Toon and I'd not seen them for years either. That was an epic gig as well. Fish, however, well, he was my first love lol.🙄

I had read this book during high school and it was an utterly depressing story but well written. I expected none other than Fish to be able to transmute this work into his own world. I escaped darkness, but this old f(r)iend ever keeps watch, piggybacking wherever I go, so I have to feed him every day. The diet is humour.

I'm sorry to say that, but that's what I feel. I love Fish in the Marillion season. After that, it's been more of the same. Each album is a copy of the previous one with slight differences. I realize that his voice is no longer the same, but what I miss is the theatrical voice with which he sang, the small nuances. Now is more a singer like many others. Marillion's Fish disappeared with his departure.

It's probably time you got over it. Fish left Marillion 30 years ago He's made a huge amount of wonderful music since then. And his voice sounds much more rich now when he sings in a lower register. He has aged like a fine wine. Get over it.
