Alvord Desert to Owyhee Overland Route Day 2 - Camping on a Cliff

  • This is Day 2 of the Alvord Desert to Owyhee Overland Route that Donald from Soft Roading the West and I are creating. We started the day having to drive back out a rough Jeep trail, that is a bit narrow for the full sized van. The Overland route takes us through Rome Station where we can top off our fuel supply. We then continue along the Owyhee until we find and amazing place to camp right on a cliff overlooking the Owyhee river. From camping spot on the cliff I could sit by the fire and look over the beautiful canyon that laid before me.

    You truly are an inspiration for new overland hopefuls. I just bought an E350 to build out and be able to leave anywhere, anytime. The freedom is invaluable these days, especially if you live in city. My friend also just got a 4runner so I've shown him your videos to motivate him to travel with me. Cant wait to travel up from LA to the pacific northwest. Keep it up man!

      There’s quite a few of us up hear that spend most of our time in the outdoors. So if you feel like doing a bit of wandering with a local that knows the area give us a shout. Most of us follow Jason of primal outdoors and/or Casey at coyote works. Its always fun to show people the stuff we take for granted lol. Cheers

    Be careful Jason on that rim with your awning!!.....I was camped right in that same area and lost my awning with a freak short blast of wind that came rushing up that valley out of nowhere sounding like a dang freight train or something...freak ...it was calm before and after...It took my Darche 180 awning ripped the stakes out of the ground and stood the awning straight up like a huge sailfish bending the mounting brackets! I went the next 5 weeks of my trip with no awning.
    It was all worth it though cuz well it's Owyhee!!...and the next day I got to the lookout and the place you camped with the RMT Jeep. I got the lookout you were at in a video I made if you want proof, I was there...on my BirdPhish channel... part 2 of my Owyhee Canyon videos.

    Jason, I really enjoyed the video. Now, for the intake and exhaust of your heater. A possible solution would be. As you stand beside the van.
    Facing the ladder. Attach your fresh air intake to the left side of your ladder. On the inside surface of the vertical ladder rail. Extending 3/4 the vertical
    length of the ladder. in turn, angling the intake hose downward in an inverted U shape Oriented toward the front of the vehicle.
    Placing a means of a filtering element over the fresh air intake. Keeping water and debris out of the intake tube.
    For the exhaust tubing. Attach it to the right side of the inner aspect of the vertical ladder tubing. Running the exhaust tubing all the up to the roof on the van.
    In turn, orienting the exhaust tubing toward the rear of the van. Covering the exhaust tubing with a means to keep insect and the like out. This design should minimize
    any chance of CO contamination. if you don't have one in your van. The addition of a Carbon Monoxide {CO} monitor. Would be a good adjunct, when the heather is in operation.
    Cheers, Mate.

    When we do prolonged overlanding here in the foothills of the Appalachian mts., I have added 2 four gallon Roto-pax containers to my vehicle (just in case!). Of course, we are more "crawded" here in the east than you are out west. Twice when my brother and I were exploring the western U.S.A., we couldn't find a fueling station when we were running dry. It's worth consideration.

    Really no white wine reduction? Ya, to fancy for my taste to. This was the best part of camping or overlanding in my books is your meal at the end of the day. I am not a fancy chief but I do like to push it over the top and do more than KD for the evening meal. By the camp fire with a glass or cup of spirts just sets up the hopefully great sleep. Something I almost never get at home. Great team you and Don, look forward to next adventure. Oh, no offence to Ed I like his vlogs to.

    • @theflyfishingnomad9641
      @theflyfishingnomad9641 Před 2 lety +1

      Before heading out there in the summer check the daily temps, it can get hot, maybe hotter then you like. I’d also reach out to the local BLM Office. A heads up on area and road conditions can save getting in a crappy situation. I like to ask if they were out there what roads would they avoid. Some of those roads become one vehicle wide going up and down hills and in and out of the canyons. Finding one blocked by rock fall could result in having to back out, and that would be a nightmare on those narrow roads, especially in and out of a canyon. I’m considering a drone to view the road before driving in and out of those canyons. Its beautiful country and the night sky is awesome, you truly see all the stars. If you fish you’ll find areas of the river that probably have never been fished. When your done it might require a tiring walk out of the canyon but the fishing can be great. One day I hit a bug hatch and my fly never sat on the water longer then a minute before being taken, one of the best afternoons of fishing I’ve ever had. A Couple of Screws Loose, enjoy your time out there. 🙃

    • @acoupleofscrewsloose
      @acoupleofscrewsloose Před 2 lety

      @@theflyfishingnomad9641 Thanks for the info. Yeah, we'd either go in the beginning of summer or early fall. And it all depends on forest fire smoke too. Last year that area had a lot. Something we'd like to avoid. I've seen people use drones for scouting out a head and thought that was hella smart. Getting one is on our list. Maybe it's time. Especially for scouting. Do you have any recommendations?
      We keep thinking we are all set with our gear and then of course there's always something else to add. 😄
