I have a love/hate relationship with Mr. Vernon. I love the majority of his albums from a production standpoint and his penchant for experimentation is admirable. Too bad everything else about him and his music I find insufferable and/or pretentious. Him collaborating with Kanye basically set off a wave of alternative artists attempting to buy their "black card". I'm not against musicians fleshing out their sound and exploring new avenues, in fact, I sort of encourage it. I'm not a purist, and good on those in hip hop that gave them a chance and the exposure. Y'all didn't have to. It kinda rubs me the wrong way that the genre is handing out credibility like carnival lollipops, as if the majority of those in, in this case, Kanye's audience rlly cares that much about who contributed to a track. Hip hop has strayed away too far from its roots. The reason why people turned to rapping was to avoid getting into trouble/being harassed and profiled by white, racist cops, by releasing that negative energy into a passion. You're now giving your oppressors the spotlight. (I admit his vocals on "Dark Fantasy" are fire, tho.)
A friend of mine said it best: barista rock. If he could've won Best New Artist category, it should've been for his debut in 2008. This was definitely the era of the Grammys where they gave too much of a fuck about critical reputation. Trying to appease the indie crowd and the pop crowd simultaneously. Kind of ironic since Bon Iver was already signed to a major label at this point. It's known as a showbiz, almost Vegas-y event in the amount of bloat and pomp. Nicki should've won because, frankly, 2010 wouldn't be the same without her providing the soundtrack. There are a thousand of Bon Iver clones, and ones who did it better with greater success.
The Pinkprint should have most definitely won a Grammy, still the best female rap album to date.

Well it's was important, because people held the academy in high regards and respect. Because it's to supposed to represent talent and artistry. Its music biggest night. Now we know what's going on behind scenes, and the Grammys has lost respect, and value. The Grammys and Oscars wasn't just a trophy prior to the discovery. It may have appeared as just a trophy, but to even get a nomination was once a huge thing. To have nominee in front of your name elevates your career and increases your demand.

I remember watching the 2012 Grammys and Nicki’s performance. I was in awe. I was shocked. It was the best thing I’ve seen on television, the best performance I’ve ever seen ( besides Amy Winehouse ) in a long time. Funny how that song blew up years later because of the meme culture but the meaning is fantastic. Nicki’s theatrical abilities is powerful and she is a legend. She’s deserved so many #1s and Grammys at this point but remember Katy Perry, Snoop dog, Sia , Diana Ross etc do not have Grammys. I will even give Doja a nod because I believed she was robbed for BNA but again Grammys doesn’t define your excellence, talent and versatility. Nicki will come back this year and make this a very interesting year in music as she’s always done. The people are waiting, they aren’t waiting for a Grammy. It’s like an apology that you force out of someone, it means nothing when forced.
