- Picking games for 1995 was so much more difficult than for the two previous years... And I didn't thought it possible. xD But I think that I landed on the most essential and important games for the year. Covering most genres, so that anyone should be able to find something to play.

1995 has a pretty good claim to having been the best year. I still play half of these.

1992 to 1998 was really awesome regarding games. Say, from Dune 2 until Half Life.

For me 1995 (and partly 96)will Always be the best year in gaming for dos and PC in general

Me and my friends were gaming on PS1's for Command and Conquer Red Alert, we'd use a serial link and play epic Vs. Battles against each other. Good times. We're all on PC now but back in the day I had a bit of PC knowledge out of our group and I was the only one for a long while. I was learning the DOs language at one point but never finished.
It must've been fun in local multiplayer. :)

20 of these I have in my PC collection (I was not interested in arcade or platform games, generally), in their big boxes, disk(s), manuals, maps and advertising! Needless to say, I play them regularly! 1995 is, so obviously, the best year in gaming!

For me, some of these games made extra impression because except Populus 2 on the Amiga, it was the first games I participated in linking several computers together and play against each other.

Dark Forces is legendary & for good reason. Not sure if younger viewers would understand this but the fact that you could aim up & down was a big deal at the time, even if it didn’t actually affect the way the game projected your shot to target, you could keep the gun straight & still hit enemies on walls & ledges. The reality is it’s as important to gaming history as Doom is, Dark Forces is absolutely the better game. It told a story that went way beyond “collect keys, get to the end” that is even considered Star Wars canon. I love Doom but Dark Forces is the better game & I love it.
Full Throttle is awesome & absolutely a recommend it. I never felt it was cheapened by the puzzles, I just felt it was a bit different & the game flows better for it, without constant backtracking & moon logic.
BioForge looked incredible in it’s day & whilst the pre-rendered background trick means it isn’t perfect it still looks better than others in the genre. It also has a better story than most for the time & is absolutely a classic, not to be missed. Now I come to think about it having characters scaling on a pre-rendered background is not dissimilar to modern movies having actors walking around a green set & pasting in the environment later. 😄
The Beast Within is great, the whole series is. The FMV sequences can be a bit campy but it just adds to the game & the story telling is, for me, the story telling.
Discworld! Awesome, awesome game that captured the humour of the books well. My ex & me completed it & the sequel on the PS1, where it played fine with a controller *but* that is in part because there’s no fast action to worry about. As fans of bacon… sorry, sorry I don’t know why I’m thinking of bacon? As fans of the books we loved every silly, moon logic moment of it.
Decent was 1 of the first games to really show of what a Voodoo (or other 3D accelerator) for you over software rendering & managed to be an excellent game too. It got tough & you needed to adapt your tactics as much as you could but it was great fun & had a weight to it’s physics that felt great to play.
Worms! My mate & me played so much Worms our other friends stopped playing with us because they never stood a chance. 😄 That was also on the PS1 though, where playing with a control pad was a but slower than with a mouse but being turn based it wasn’t a big deal.
You put Crusader on my radar I think? It’s an interesting one to be sure but back in ‘95 it was 3D FPS or nothing for my shooters & I didn’t give it any attention.
Earthworm Jim is so much fun that it carried over from the 16Bit era. It’s still fun now & I actually have it on Evercade now.
The Need For Speed looked more real than it was to me too, back in the day & the variety in the way the different cars drove was so much more varied than most for the time. What you may not know is, there’s no damage model because that was a condition of the licence agreement with real world car manufacturers. Car makers didn’t want gamers to see their cars with damage on them, as silly as that sounds now, & it was not just NfS, that was the same for several early 3D racers as graphics got more realistic, by the standards of the time anyway.
Terminal Velocity originally released as a software only 3D game & the 3D accelerator patch(s) came after. What makes that impressive is how well it played in software, although PC’s were getting more ‘powerful’ at that point. It plays so well & I love it. Not one to miss out on.
Simon the Sorcerer II improved on the first game & is great fun, even if it is aimed at younger audiences.
The Dig is a lesser known classic & one any fan of P&C games &/or great story telling in video games absolutely should play!
Has Open Tyrian been ported to practically everything? I have it on my (hacked) 3DS right now! As for They Live & Story of Ricky (AKA: Ricky O) They Live rocks for sure, that fight scene in the ally between Roddy Piper & Keith David was filmed in real time & went on for so long because they were actually competing with each other & neither wanted to be the first to quit, when they get exhausted at the end that was real, they were so knackered. Story of Ricky is something else. There’s no way to overstate just how over the top it is or what creating anime violence with practical effects looks like. Absolutely do invite friends to watch it & see how many say “I thought you were exaggerating but…” 😄
Screamer was & is excellent for it’s time but Screamer 2 feels like such a step up over the first game, because it was.
Hexen! What a great game! If you’re in to FPS’s (First Person Shooters) it’s absolutely recommended.
Rayman is legendary. It was ported to practically every platform at one time or another so it’s not hard to find but yeh, you put it perfectly when you said “it still is.” (One of the best platform games of all time.) I personally think the art style means it even holds up in that department to this day as well as playing as well as any modern 2D platformer. It’s legendary for a reason.
I’m going to be honest, by the time MK3 came out I was done with 1 on 1 2D fighters. There were so many new experiences on the market I just didn’t go back to that kind of game.
What a banger list! My goodness that’s a list from the year consumer 3D acceleration became a thing but doesn’t only lean in to the “new hotness” of 3D gaming, thank you.
Dark Forces with the looking up and down was indeed a big deal. That combined with classic bottomless Star Wars chasms was the first occasion when a game gave me vertigo.

I agree. While first stage in first Doom has the best FPS music to date (in my eyes that is), Dark Forces is a better game. I think cause while being FPS, it was less of a shooter, more of a movie that you participated in. And in Doom, it's definitely A shooter.
Oh some of the Beast Within videos are as cringe as they come, and you can definitely tell that the actors are having fun being odd goofballs, but that's irrelevant and doesn't take away from the incredible story at all.
All fans of bacon should unite! We would easily be the biggest force in the World. Both, in number AND size. ;)
If you're interested in the Crusader, there's the second that came out a year later, I believe, "No Regret" was its subtitle, and it was even better.
Yep, both movies are great, and both are a bit ridiculous in their own right. And most importantly both are must-watches!
Oh, Screamer 2 is my favourite arcade-style racer of all time. It's just so much fun and in such a beautiful (for the time) package.
The platformers are a fun genre because they don't get old. I mean look at flight simulations or strategies for instance. People rarely come back to them, as there's been so much improvement and so many new mechanics added to them, that objectively speaking the new games are much better. But platformers, they've peaked in the mid 90s, and ever since then, there's been more good games, but they don't differ that much from those of our youth.
The next will cover 1992, but one after will be for 1996, and there will definitely be few of the video accelerated games in it.

I played quite a bit of Heroes of Might and Magic back in the day and recently too.
Same with Tyrian, which is really good in my opinion. I recently finished it on my phone as Open Tyrian. The story was really cool :D
I notice now how much the language barrier was hindering me as a kid, so I had trouble with games where understanding English was important to their enjoyment and/or completion. Now I'm glad to go back to those games with the right weapons to bust that language barrier.
I've heard of but not yet played most of the other games. And what I've heard was high praise. I fired up The Dig once but left it for later, when I'd have more time. :D We all know what that leads to.
Jagged Alliance looks very interesting as well.
That little bit of footage of The Dig took around an hour to record, and to get to. A lot of story in dialogue in that one. That said, I've not felt the passage of time. It's so well written, it's really good!
Jagged Alliance is really one of the better games ever made. If you're into the genre. Good, b-movie story in it too, so that's always fun.
And my fave Heroes would have to be the second. It had everything the first did but more, better and fixed, and still sported a nice to the eye pixel graphics. I think it's the graphics in third, that make it my least favourite out of the original trilogy. Even if objectively speaking it's definitely the best.

I like team RPGs, so one where they also interact in some way with one another is even better. If that doesn't happen, I usually make up some some backstory for them anyway.

I loved X-Com Terror From the Deep and the music was so effective at putting over the environment. I seem to remember that they tried to explain away the loss of technological advancements in the first game by saying that all alien technology stopped working after you kill the brain on Cydonia, but don't quote me on that.
You know... That would make A LOT of sense. OK, now I know. Not checking, I trust you with this one. :)
No, the second game didn't have tech from the first because 1) lasers and plasmas are useless underwater (would have been handy for the terror missions, though!), 2) Elerium is incredibly precious, 3) Alien Alloys dissolve _really_ readily in salt water (which only makes the Elerium even _more_ precious, because a lot of the sunk UFOs are already quite ruined). If you squint a bit, it makes sense, most of the technology really wouldn't have been very useful underwater. Even the armour is useless, because the enemies use sonic weapons which would not be dissipated in the slightest by the "conventional" armour (and melee attacks are strong and accurate enough to penetrate the weak points, as with Chryssalids from the original).
The _third_ game didn't have tech from the _second_ because it all stopped working when T'leth was destroyed. The only remnant is Zrbite itself, which while now inert, became incredibly useful exactly _because_ it's so inert - no longer as a power source, but instead an inert lining for spaceship engines, allowing extreme temperatures and pressures, and opening the path to interstellar travel. The small amounts of Elerium flowing from the Frontier and Mars finally allow us to slowly start using Elerium-based technology again.

I still need to go back finish playing Gabriel knight 2. and although I own Heroes of Might and magic, I have yet to play it. I must remedy this.
You can really see actors having fun in Gabriel at times. Also, the story's good.

Yeah, I know, I've done the big DOS series already, with each year covered more thoroughly - good and bad. But picking the 25 out of hundreds of games is difficult as often more than that deserves to be "the best". xD

Albion looks so much like Ambermoon.
Because same developers was working on it. And it is considered as spiritul succesor to Ambermoon and Amberstar. There is even Amiga tech demo of Albions 3D FPP engine.
