  • Vietnam has no native apes within its borders. Yet countless soldiers reported to have seen them, or rather “ape-like creatures” similar to Bigfoot, when fighting in the country’s dense jungles during the Vietnam-American war. What were the Rock Apes? Hosted by Colin Heaton. The Forgotten History Channel is a 10th Legion Pictures Production.

So my wife and I were up in the Pacific northwest, drove up from Sacramento for a camping trip. Mt. Rainier was clear, though an occasional, chilly mist rolled in at times. I woke up before daybreak the second morning to the sound of something rustling just outside our camp. Grabbing my flashlight, I walked outside our tent, my wife still asleep. Soon I caught a repulsive, pungent odor, and again I heard the rustling, as if if were closing in on me. I struck my light, quickly scanning as much of my surroundings as I could. Then the rustling turned to obvious footsteps, and the thin light beam caught the dark, hairy, immense creature standing there... it was then that I realized my mother-in-law had somehow followed us up to Washington.

As a 2 tour Vietnam Veteran the only time I saw anything close to these so called Rock Ape was when we almost on the border of Laos and Vietnam. I still say that it was nothing but a oversized Orangutans. We weren't able to shoot at them because we were where we wasn't. Some of you know what that means. This was in 1967 and I had heard the stories of rock apes but never gave it much thought. Until that day when we 3 of us were being hit medium sized rocks and anything else this creatures could throw. I remember it was a very hilly area and some rock cliffs in there. As I said they looked more like reddish or orange colored Orangutans but about 12-18 inches taller and walked on their back legs from what we could see. After about 15-20 minutes they moved on and figured we weren't any danger to them. I saw nothing that resembled the descriptions some have given. And again we had a encounter with the same looking creatures close to Cambodia. I knew they were the same because that was my job to observe and report what I had seen.
Other than that I have spent a lot of time in the mountains of Appalachia mountains where I lived for 3 years. I never saw anything that I could really and honestly ID as a BigFoot. I did hear a lot of what I call as log ot tree thumping and some loud screams from deep in the mountain's. Most I ID with a wildcat or a panther. Which will make your skin crawl at the sound until you get used to it. They loved circling the campsite during out 8PM meals. We could see the glowing eyes but never the full size of it.
I hope I didn't bore you with my stories... thanks or reading. Have a great day...

My grandad served in Vietnam. I was 3 when he passed from cancer. Much too young to remember him unfortunately. My grandma however would tell us stories of the experiences and stories my grandpa told her, and one of them was his witnessing of hairy ape like creatures that passed through his camp at night. He said they did not crouch, did not hop, but walked upright like a human. His fellow soldiers were with him and saw the same thing, so this was not an isolated sighting by only one person. Very strange but very credible. I always wondered about those stories my grandma passed onto us and watching this video revived this memory.

I worked as a Temp Mail Handler for US Postal Service in 1990. I was 18 at the time. I worked along side quite a few ex marines and other retired military that served in the Vietnam War. At break, they spoke about certain things that happen in Vietnam. A few of those stories were about the Rock Apes. One particular story that one co-worker of mine at the time (Harold) spoke of. He was assigned to a transport Helicopter (Door Gunner). They would fly over a certain path through some hillsides and these rock apes would throw large rocks at the helicopters whenever they flew by. I remember him saying it was as they were waiting for them to fly by to launch these huge rocks at them as it was a frequent fly thru area. I will never forget the things they would talk about. I highly respected these men. These men have been thru Hell and back. Absolutely NO reason for them to lie or make up such things.

In 1973 while attending technical training at Lowery AFB there was a squadron for the rehabilitation of the many Vietnam returnees that were not able to be reestablished into regular military life due to their actions while stationed in Nam. We were treated too many first hand war stories and shown souvenirs that served as a reminder of some battles. One evening a young troop proceeded to tell us the story of his special forces platoon coming in contact with rock apes while retreating back to camp. According to his story a 45 min battle ensued and the gory details were very unimaginable to those of us who were just beginning our military service. The most heart wrenching part of the story was how three members of his platoon was killed by the creatures that seemed to come out of everywhere and only the fact that the creatures had no weapons other than stones and sticks or what ever was available they proceeded to tear into the platoon as if they were the Viet Cong. Until the viewing of this video I'd never considered sharing this story with anyone because it was just so unbelievable but I'm convinced that this young troop's story is very true and very real. Thanks Forgotten History for the opportunity to share this story and hopefully give credit to those many service members who encountered so many unrecorded historical battles that will forever be a part of history.
The rehabilitation squadron was the military way of dealing with what is known today as PTSD.

In 1991 I became a California Correctional officer, my 1st partner was a former Marine, Vietnam veteran. After a few months he warmed up enough to where he would tell me war stories. He told me they were on patrol and came across some caves at the base of some giant cliffs, inside one cave they could hear the chatter in which they took for Vietnamese, assuming they were Viet-cong, they yelled into the caves for them to come out, and the chattering got louder. At this time they tossed in a couple of hand grenades and then opened fire into the caves. When they had ceased-fire they entered the cave expecting to find the enemy, but what they found were dead rock apes. He said they had heard about them but had never seen them until now, he said there was about six or eight dead ones, he said they were about 5 1/2 to 6 feet tall but he could not tell if they walked on their hind legs or all fours as the ones he saw were laying dead.

It's amazing how these creatures have been talked about for millenia all over the world. I'm from Manipur, a Northeastern state of India. It's a place where "modernism" has been introduced only after the American missionaries came around the 1905-1910s. Before that, my forefathers were tribesmen who partook in headhunting and lots of rival wars between communities. And yes, we are closer to East and South East Asians than we are to mainland Indians, both genetically and culturally(just google some pictures to see what I mean). Even in the most secluded parts of the state, which to this day people live in mud houses and thatched roofs, stories like these have been reported. Some are flying fire-like orbs(mostly known as 'Kau' but they have different names), some are 'Zomisang' which is pretty much either a "skinwalker" or a bigfoot of some sort. They are known to mimic human sounds and speech, cry for help, make baby-cry noises, etc. which are all characteristics of some Native American Wendigos and Skinwalkers. There's so much more but I can't cover them all in one youtube comment.

They were walking through the jungle along a cliff and all of a sudden they started betting pelted by little rocks. The rocks got bigger and started hitting members of his platoon. They looked up and saw "hairy human like" creatures. The creatures started getting more aggressive so the platoon leader ordered them to open fire. As they started firing some of the creatures were hit. Others ran off into the jungle. My dad said there were about 20 of them and they killed a few and injured more. His platoon leader said..."This never happened." They recouped, reloaded and started moving toward their check point.

I can only imagine the strength of these beings. They usually have a family with them and just like any other kind of apex predator they'll protect their own by any means necessary.

My encounter. I want to say the summer of 89. My younger brother and myself were playing in the woods across the street heading down to my fishing hole in a small creek. By woods I mean the Alaskan bush. Even though housing was going in it was still very wild. I digress. We get halfway down the little hill about 10 feet from my spot. We both stopped dead in our tracks. We both see something black and hairy splishing and splashing trying to catch fish. We couldn't see it immediately due to an old growth birch tree had tipped over and the roots ripped up a 5x5 disk of soil. So the view was partly obstructed. I looked back at my brother his was pale and he was mouth breathing. At first we thought oh crap we are about to startle a black bear. My brother tried to whisper to me the thing stopped and squat down in the creek. Then it slowly stood up and peered over the top of the root mass. It reached out to move a birch sprout growing out of the roots with it's long black fingers. It tilted it's head and looked me dead in the eyes. I caught a flash of red. I saw the strong jaw and cheekbone. Jet black skin. The creek water on his face caught the sun light a little. I was able to make out more of a chimp face. My brother had enough and I knew we were too close. So we ran out of there so fast I puked up a little bit of dinner. We could hear it crashing away in the opposite direction. I glanced over to see it slinking under the criss crossed trees. He was moving low and fast. The trees quaked as it pulled itself through the brush. He was crawling as fast as we were running. Moving like a ghost. His reach was crazy. The fishing hole that thing was standing in was 4ft deep. Which puts him about 9 ft tall. Jet black and lanky. So less Hairy and the Hendersons and more Planet of the apes. Picture a chimp with a big square jaw line like a skunk ape but taller. So not only did I have to worry about moose, bears, and timber wolves, I had to think about this slippery dude. I have nightmares from time to time but the stress of walking home from my friends was so draining as kid. Your footsteps echo of the frozen trees in the dead of winter. It's so haunting. I want to say I caught a glimpse of the thing years later when I was grouse hunting. I was headed back crossing a pretty big meadow. I saw his arm holding onto a tree. As soon as I spotted him he slinked away. The sun was setting and I did not want to be caught out there at night. I beat feet for home. That was the last time I went grouse hunting that way again. I must have been around 15 or 16. The location was Wolf Lake trail. The creek as a small creek that was connected to Anderson Lake. Halfway between Palmer and Wasilla.

This is interesting in a way most people would not think of. In World War II, the foo fighters were observed by pilots from every country. In Europe, the Allied pilot though they were some kind German secret weapon and the German pilots thought they were something the Allies had developed. In the Far East, both Japanese and Allied pilots saw the same thing and thought the same thing too. Here, there is the story of some monster that threatens the forces on both sides equally. What have sailors and soldiers in wars that were fought before the age of aviation and steel ships experienced? I don't know, but there must be something.

My profile pic is of what I seen in Ontario Canada in 2018, I snuck out of my tent in a moss floor jack pine forest thinking I was going to catch some person playing a prank on me, I couldn’t have been more wrong. As it went to stand upright I snapped a photo and as it stood towering over my 5’9 body, it displayed a shocked expression of uncertainty. It then turned and walked into the darkness with every step sounding over a thousand pound mass pouting into the night. No further interaction has occurred the rest of my trip.
I liked the woods better not knowing they are out there but I think it’s important that people know there are more dangers that’s make black bears seem like poodles in comparison.

When you hear a relative calls your name when you know you are in the middle of nowhere dont go towards it. Thats why you tell your family to not come after you when you go hunting. I also heard a story from an uncle who went hunting one day. He has a little tree stand where he made. He slept there one day, and he saw a big dark shadow walk through the woods. The next thing he knew, he heard sticks cracking below his tree. He went back to lay down and scared. The next thing he realize it's head was looking at him, but it didn't do anything and climb back down and left.

Twenty-five years ago, I had a VA patient tell me about the "Rock Apes". So-called because they would throw rocks at the soldiers. He stated they would not shoot at them because it would give away their position. I believe he said they were around 4 ft tall. I didn't think it was unusual as there doesn't seem to be anything odd about apes in the jungle. I did find it somewhat amusing that apes were throwing rocks at soldiers though. He didn't present them as terrorizing but more as being annoying as no one was killed by them.

Gary Linderer is one of the most respected humans, in my opinion at least, to ever report an encounter with a Sasquatch (or similar species) as I have read his novels detailing his time in Vietnam. When people talk of a real man or a tough guy...this gentleman fits the bill to a tee.
Mr. Linderer was LRRP (Lurps as they were known) and those men were some of the bravest, toughest and feared soldiers in the Vietnam war. They literally would live in the jungle for weeks doing long-range scouting and recon. If you ever want a good read about the Vietnam War then I definitely suggest purchasing the books of Mr. Linderer.

I recall seeing elsewhere that the US tried to scare the Vietcong/NVA using scary sounding voice recordings.

All these stories about dead apes, but apparently nobody had a camera. Because soldiers never take photographs...

I remember the Vietnam Soldiers coming back to Alabama and were the next generations training Officers talking about Rock Apes and Other things. I didn't believe the stories thought they were trying to scare us. Thank God I missed Vietnam by 1 year.

Reading Roger Lockshier's book, "We saved SOG souls", a gunship crew chief for the 101st Airborne aviation battalion. He describes seeing this creature on a couple of occasions and tells of others from the recon teams also seeing them

Us hmongs call it a "mah-lu" ape with stiff joints who eats human intestines. My grandparents used to say that they used to sleep 2 people opposite of each other so feet at the head and head at the feet so at night when you're sleeping it'll look like both ends have heads so the creature won't eat you when it comes into camp

I hiked so many volcanoes in Nicaragua. My last trip was in Chinandega, where I hiked the Cosiguina Volcano. We stayed with a local family within the Cosiguina town, and that night I hear whooping sounds all night long. That noise could not come from a howler monkey since it sounded bigger and with a bigger lung capacity. I believe the Sisimite roams in Central America's Jungle.
