  • Kenneth Douglas Stewart Anderson (8 March 1910 - 30 August 1974), was a writer and hunter who went on several adventures in the jungles of south India and wrote books about his thrilling stories of hunting Man-eating Tigers and Leopards.
This is my attempt to follow up on his adventures to try and find the places where those events took place. During this trip i went on the trail of "Spotted Devil of Gummalapur", from the book 9 maneaters and 1 rogue, where kenneth followed up and shot a man-eating leopard (which had accounted to 45 lives by then) at a place Devarabetta, near Thally in tamil nadu. I thoroughly enjoyed following up on this trail and had a bit of an adventure myself.

Nice tour! The calls of Brown-headed Barbet and Grey Junglefowl made me feel I am actually in the jungle!! Anderson talks of forests on all sides of Bengaluru at reasonable distances. It seems despite the deforestation, they still remain in many tracts....

Thanks for this video. It reminds of our family visit to this place during sixties.we use visit this place quite often with Late Mr Roreich(Russian painter) who was owning a big estate in Kanakapura Road. Then we use to take Harohalli-Dodda Maralawadi-Dodduru-Bilalam-Thally.In those days the road was existing from Dodduru to Thally was Bullock Cart Tract.I understand now this track has been converted to motorable road.I request SR to clarify as you are frequent traveler of KA’s territory.I want to travel by this road to visit Gumulapur & Devarabetta. Many thanks SR for presenting this video.👍👍🙏

Thank you Sir and its good to know about your visit in the 60's. Regarding Mr Roreich, I have visited Devikarani-Roreich estate once and it was a beautiful place. About the Harohalli-doddamaralawadi-Therubeedi-Thali road, well it's a beautiful taramac road now to drive, but am sure in the 60's it would have been exciting and adventurous to travel in this track since the forests would have been much denser.

Thanks a lot SR.Now I will take this route with our family members. But without Mr Roreich & Mr Kenneth. We miss them a lot.I agree earlier Forest use to be dense. We have destroyed 80% of our Forest in last 70 years whatever is left we should preserve.Kanakapura,Muggur & Denkanikota forests are really beautiful. We admire your courage in exploring these forests alone on Bullet Motor Cycle. All our family members my father, grand father,my brothers & sisters are nature lovers we continue to do that.We have trekked entire Nilgiris when my father was posted from HAL,Bangalore to HPF,Ooty. He retired from HPF in 1976.I was in Banking Service & allotted To Syndicate Bank.I retired in 2012.Now I stay in Brigade Omega,BSK 6th Stage,1sr Block,Opp.Thurahalli Reserve Forest.Hope to meet you soon to exchange & share our experience.I congratulate your family members supporting you in your adventures.Onceagain thank you very much.God Bless your Family.🙏

Denuded forest. How forests are denuded by cutting trees or burning is unbelievable. Durung East India company rule it was considered a good pastime or exercise for soldiers to hunt in forest to kill bison elephants and Tigers. Trees were cut and sent ti England and Mazagaon Dicks Bombay to build ships as well as sleeper for railway.
