Bizarre and Bloody Practices of Medieval Barbers

  • Barbers in the Middle Ages were excellent multi-taskers. It’s true: a lot of surgery in the Middle Ages was done by so-called barber-surgeons, a medieval precursor to the old dude with the combs in the blue water down the street. But they did a whole lot more than just cut people open. The list below features some of the surprising - and often disgusting - things that medieval barbers did besides just cut hair.

      For a simple explanation, guilds were similar to unions! They were comprised of the working class, and many of them were men. There were also guilds of working women. They were like a family, making sure everyone was paid fairly, no one was being being treated unjustly, and that if anyone needed anything, they were there to provide. So it was very much like unions!

    A report on ancient execution methods could be interesting. Since the 18th century the guillotine has been famous. The story is not what you might think. Dr. Guillotin didn't invent the machine and was opposed to capital punishment. However, as he could not get support for abolishing it, he did the next best thing.
    Executions at the time were quite horrible and dreadfully painful and if one goes further back in time they probably weren't any better. So he advanced the idea of using a machine that had been invented long before as quick, less painful way to carry them out. He was actually trying to make the distasteful process more humane, or at least less inhumane.

  • @alanhyt79
    @alanhyt79 Před 2 lety +3

    When I was in nursing school, we were studying surgical nursing and I was lucky enough to get in to watch the most respected, local gastrointestinal surgeon remove my patient's entire large intestine and connect the end of his small intestine to a stoma located on his abdomen. The last step was to remove the anus and seal that wound with stitches since he wouldn't need it any longer. When the surgeon examined the perianal area, he said, "This has not been shaved." The orangey-brown of the povidone-iodine solution used to sterilize the skin was there, but hairs were sticking up and they were obvious. One of the OR nurses said, "I'm sorry, doctor. That was my fault. I can do it right now." The surgeon said, "No, I'll do it myself. Just bring me the razor." He lathered up the area and began shaving off the hairs. I'll never forget what he said next, because I cracked up and almost fell over. He said, "This reminds me of the days of the Barber Surgeons." Only a couple of us in the theater got the joke. The surgeon was well-pleased with us.
    I saw the thumbnail for this video and remembered that experience. I remember being glad that I had been fascinated and even horrified by primitive medicine and surgery (turned out to consist mostly of superstitious nonsense that tended to cause more harm), so of course I read up on it. I ended up hating on Galen and his followers for the harm they did over a thousand years with their "laudable pus" theory. They'd beat up anyone who dared question the great Galen and insist that poultices of animal dung be placed on wounds after surgery "so that pus can form and thus the wound can heal. A wound cannot heal without the formation of pus!" they claimed, those idiots. How many people died because of them? It's hard to say.
    IMO, Ambroise Pare was one of the most fascinating characters of the barber surgeons. His writings and illustrations, especially the "monsters," are incredible and often fanciful. There should be movies made about Ambroise Pare.

      @@PollyAlice2000 It’s a quote from that part of the movie! An old guy not yet dead is being loaded into the cart and doing everything he can think of to avoid being trucked away. Meanwhile the person wanting to load him on the cart is trying to convince the cart guy that the old dude is honestly about to snuff it and please can he just accept the not-yet-dead fellow on this round. It’s my favorite part of the film!

    Wait, wait, wait now... blood letting is not a wholly ineffective treatment. I'm sure it was for 99% of the things it was used for, but there are diseases like hemochromatosis where bloodletting is the actual modern day treatment.

    A field surgeon during the Civil War was very dismayed about having to amputate legs and arms. He tried everything nearly literally to try to stop gangrene. The saviour of soldiers limbs he discovered in a very old medical pamphlet that In ancient Egypt Doctors used garlic. So the doc would clean the wound/ wounds. Then stuff a clove of garlic into the bullet wound. He had the least amount legless of soldiers after fact.

    Who was the first person to suggest boiling oil be poured into a gunshot wound, let alone all the potential Nobel Prize winners that came after carrying on the practise?! It suggests to me that the human species has an inherent stubbornness that we shall never be rid of.

    Well there was some interesting things here but I already had a good idea what the barber surgeon did.
    Did you ever wonder haw the barbershop quartet came about. When the barber was carrying out surgery it could get quite noisy, because of the amount of pain involved for the patient and the lack of painkillers not given to the said patient. So the barber would leave out sheet music and musical instruments for his other customers so that their singing and music playing would drown out the patients cries. From this came the barbershop quartet. Though having heard four men dress as barbers from the start of the 20th century singing in close harmony some of use prefare the screams.

    Redken actually had a shampoo in their men's line called Clean Brew. The shampoo itself was an Amber beer color, and even the bottle looked reminiscent of a beer bottle...
    Although I'm not sure if the product actually contained any beer or not, I do recall it having a (verrryyy light) beer fragrance mixed with some 'masculine' botanicals.

      There was also a shampoo called "Body on Tap" that contained beer back in the 70's/80's. I remember the commercial "it has beer, but DON'T drink it"...quess why they discontinued it? Yup! Some morons were drinking it and getting sick. People can be so stupid.

    With proper training and equipment I'm all for small town barbers like the ones in towns with no medical facilities nearby being trained in more than basic first aid for emergency situation as a stop gap to keep people alive till higher trained medical help is available, or basic wound care and whatnot provided it was in a separate sanitized place from the shaves and whatnot. Or God forbid a massive casualty incident they could set up a triage center at the barber until the disaster unit or whoever got there.
