One of the greatest things about Renata's storytelling, in my opinion, is despite the Jojo poses she feels very *real*. I grew up in a low income black household and I can't help but see the parallels between Renata and the myth of "black excellence". Someone who rose above their past material conditions and is looked up to, but ultimately does nothing to materially change systems that gave birth to the "person who made it" (think Obama or Beyoncé). And especially if I think about her the way a small Zaunite kid would, sure in reality she displaces hundreds of families and wrecks the environment, but I don't know that. All I know is that her medicine is why my grandmother is alive, her respirators are why I can go outside some days to see my friends, and in the future her employment is what will keep me from starving. Now there's no guarantee Riot sees her the same way, but currently the way she fits into the class struggle narrative of PZ makes for a bone-chilling yet compelling villian.

Renata Glasc is always a character I point to about sexy characters vs sexualised characters. She's clearly designed to be attractive but that attractiveness comes from the same things as what we've come to expect from sexy male characters: her confidence, her sleek, expensive outfit, her experience, etc. She has a great body and a large chest, yeah, but the same way male characters can be built without being the focal point of the design. I'm pleasantly surprised with LoL for this and I hope this and the popularity of Mel, Sevika, Vi, and Ambessa from Arcane encourages more executives to allow their artists more variety in what's appealing. Like, I wish we were allowed more female characters who *aren't* meant to be attractive but hey, at least this is in the right direction

In the reading I've done into social power structures, I came across one account that said that, in matriarchal societies, women are considered most attractive when they're in their 40s or so, since that's the point in life when they're most likely to be properly established and have a large amount of wealth, property and status. I feel that's definitely what the designers were going for with Renata.

    • @PoisonFlower765

I feel like there's nothing wrong with _every character being attractive,_ as long as they're still unique and their character isn't compromised for their attractiveness. A more important caveat is that if every female character has to be attractive (in some way), so does every male character.

    • @Sootielove
      @Sootielove Před 9 měsíci +8

@@PoisonFlower765 Personally, I think there is an issue with every character needing to be attractive because it's often an incredibly limiting view of what "attractive" is and ugliness has its place in art/design, but you're 100% correct that the issue is that all women have to be attractive but the men don't and often comes at the cost of character

    • @PoisonFlower765

What I like the most about Renata is how she doesn't fit visually with anyone. If we look at Zaunites, they are always more rough in clothing or appearance overall, while Piltovans are more geometrical and industrial. This creates a distinction. Looking at her, you can't put her in a box with anyone, which makes you always see her as special, different from everyone and as a result it compliments her story and her boss-like apppearence. You don't look at her and think she's important. You look at her and suddenly all others' designs fade into the background. The visible contrast makes her steal the spotlight, but contrary to likes of Seraphine, instead of making her out of place, it makes the place look out of her league.

I think it’s because you can see the aesthetics at work, just tweaked and morphed. Her tech still has that liquid tubes and glass vials feel of zaun tech and she wears white and uses gold in her tech like piltover. But the pink liquid sets it apart from green chemtech or blue hextech, and the black and pink accents and the face mask set her apart from the gold and white and blue piltover aesthetic. It’s a mix of their aesthetics with a heavy dose of her own flair added, mixing into something wholly different.

I like the idea of a mix between “villain victory” and “villain defeat”-namely, she’s not defeated at the eleventh hour but at the stroke of midnight. Wheels are already turning, Piltover is already crashing down, and though Renata may be chased off her throne, it’s too late to keep the status quo.
Because there’s a tolerance limit to her poison, and after years of microdosing, the elites of Piltover hit that limit. They go irrevocably, violently mad, tearing apart not only their city but Renata’s empire as well. She realizes what’s happening and flees at the last minute, with the heroes on her tail, and while she escapes…nobody can escape the consequences.
Now, for the first time, everyone is on equal footing: the bottom. Some unite for the hood of all, others try vainly to re-establish the status quo, while others act on old grudges now their oppressors are in reach. Every P&Z champion is left to, in their own ways, pick up the pieces. To ally and fight over their own visions of rebuilding.
And Renata? She escapes the law and the urchins, but not the consequences of her actions. She did what she set out to do: become powerful and bring down the powerful…including herself. She’s right back where she started: the bottom.
But she knows how to work her way up, and how to form a loyal faction. Can she do it again? Can she silence those who know her crimes and rebuild the twin cities in her image? Will she OWN her actions, painting herself as the avenging savior of Zaun? Or will whatever new order emerges take her to task for destroying the old one?

@@danielorlovaquinn to be honest, I'm not surprised that we didn't have an old lady character until now. Camille is an enhanced human, a combination between flesh and machine brought up by a cold and perfectionist family and taught to be cold and perfect, which is why she is ageless and elegant. LeBlanc is a powerful mage and a master manipulator, so why wouldn't she use her magic to stay young and good-looking? Elise was obsessed with maintaining her looks and beauty, so it's her entire theme - she agreed to become a monster just so she could stay young. All these characters had the means not to look their age and used them - because they had no reason not to use them.
What makes Renata special is that she could have invested in means and tech to make her look younger, but she doesn't care. Her main goal is her revenge. She doesn't give a damn about her gray hair or her wrinkles, she does her best to look stylish and presentable, and she rocks her look. @@velvetgorge3844 Good point about LeBlanc. Also, IMHO, I kinda get why most of the characters in League of Legends use the opportunity to look younger (and be immortal) -- this is what most people would do IRL. Very few men and women would consciously reject the option, it's natural for us to want more time, to extend our prime years as much as possible. Therefore, when a character living in a world where magical rejuvenation exists ignores or refuses this opportunity in favor of putting their resources elsewhere, it communicates their resolve, determination, and philosophy. For instance, Swain, while not old, isn't exactly young. He could probably use his demonic powers to rejuvenate himself. But he applies them for more practical purposes and isn't afraid of his mortality. In fact, he even prepared an assassin to kill him if he ever goes mad with power, as the old Noxian king did. His signs of aging are both marks of his experience and humanity, the humility behind his pride and dignity.
I'm cool with more characters who look older or even old, especially female characters. But there is something fascinating about the characters who look their age, not because they don't have the means to change it, but because it's their conscious choice.

No redemption, it just feels so out of character for her to have a face turn and want to heal all the damage she did to achieve her goal. Renata has become my favorite champ. She's a powerful supervillain type character, an elegant Lex Luthor with a touch of Joker(in terms of methods of how she uses her chemicals). I like how the story doesn't try to portray her as a hero or necessarily in the right but she has a real solid motive. It's also refreshing that she's a villain who revels in what she does and that makes her stand out against a lot of the grim dark antagonistic characters in league, landing in a similar spot as Veigar and Odyssey Kayn. I especially like how she's just a person, not some mage or demigod or warrior, just a person who outsmarted and outwitted people. She's a powerful businesswoman with a commanding presence. I've always loved fun and interesting villains who almost have fun with what they do and she fits this perfectly. Her gameplay makes you feel so clever and powerful when you save an ally and set up an objective or pull off a successful ult. Add that with fantastic design and character and she's the perfect villain for the story of Piltover and Zaun.

As a character designer, I believe critical analysis of character designs is both helpful in learning as well as holds designers accountable for their decisions. I am constantly frustrated by overly sexy designs that have no character reasoning behind them.
They become an attractive design but if there is no reasoning behind it I feel it cheapens their character. If the only reason that can be given for a character being sexy is "sex sells" then you are admitting that the character design is uncompelling and was designed around marketability over depth. Particularly with Arcane's redesigns it was shown that different proportions, muscle, scarring, and imperfections on female characters can be really interesting and equally as attractive without going the conventional "safe" route. I can only hope these ideas are furthered as we move forward.

The most obvious example of this, to me, is Sona/Seraphine. The characters are so similar both mechanically and conceptually (notice i said "similar," not "the same") that i see no reason why we shouldn't just pick one and delete the other entirely

    • @alanaazzopardi8190

Tbh, I don't think getting rid of seraphine or sona is a good idea if you factor in people's reception to doing that would be. Both have their fanbases. They are both beloved characters to some people. I think one needs to have their kit reworked, though, to distinguish the two gameplay-wise. I do think seraphine's fans are more probably interested in her appearance and skins so if her kit was tweaked somehow to be more distinct from sona's I wouldn't imagine there'd be much backlash from that. But there are a lot of champions that I don't know if many people care about. Don't know the meta too well, though, and who knows, maybe there's an underground cult following even for champs that I forget exist.

Every single time I see the “Sera and Sona have similar kits” discussion, it shows that you haven’t played both of them. Seraphine is primarily a damage dealer, and Sona is primarily an enchanter. Seraphine is honestly closer to Lux than she is to Sona.

I've been doing a big roleplay thing with someone that has Renata as a main character to explore her story and stuff more. I should write some Renata fanfic stuff. I don't even play LoL but I found her so captivating that I got into your videoes wanting to learn lore for context around her and the world around her especially after having finally watched Arcane.

Another interesting end scenario would be "I became Piltover's aristocracy so it could die with me." She could attain her victory, reach the top of the pile and then willingly face justice for her crimes to right both the injustices she inflicted, and also create a wave empowering Zaun to either swallow Piltover or rise up to meet it and demand similar justice from its entire system. Based on how you've sold her character I don't think she'd care which happened.
I view this scenario sort of like the priests from "The Order" who indulged in sin their whole lives that they knew the church would never forgive and so they call in the Sin Eater at the last minute to cleanse them so that they can reap the rewards of their faith without ever having followed it.
Renata ruthelessly chases her vengeance and drives to the top of Piltover's society then, as though she can make up for her actions, funds a rebellion or otherwise draws the attention of the Zaunites to rise up and topple her empire and Piltover with it. She Assuages her own conscience by falling on what she sees as a martyr's sword without living a life to atone for her actions. She gives death for death rather than a life for a life.

I, too, am tired of that typical anime girl design that is so prevalent in LoL. Even though I've stopped playing the game, as someone who enjoys lore/world/character building, I still keep an eye on it. Even at this state, most champions are so interesting, imagine if they invested a bit more effort into the lore. I live for dramatic, morally grey or even anti-villainous characters like Renata Glasc. So, I absolutely loved this video. Especially your fan fiction. It definitely left me feeling things. Mostly bittersweet, Renata's situation is so hopeless and I felt that to my core.

Absolutely love the talk about how important her age is. It is true that most champs in this game, specifically female, they are either middle aged or outright ancient and don't show it. I'm not saying we need everyone to have saggy skin but Renata showed us you can look old and stylish.

Kalista never really read to me as particularly young. I kinda figured her translucence added to her smoothness. She seems late thirties but that may be influenced by knowing her story and that she’s one of the few female characters they let be posed in a dark and angry way that adds mature vibes to her.

I'd love to see that, especially with Jinx having already attacked the council. Maybe she uses the resulting confusion, the losses and paranoia to insert herself as a stabilizing influence, slowly gathering power to herself and playing herself as an ally to all sides in the conflict. And by the time anyone realizes what's happened, she's already made herself invaluable, untouchable.

In that revenge scenario I could see her settling down in some backwater in noxian occupied ionia, maybe with a connection to sett and try to live out her twilight years being tended to with ionian remedies and trying to 'take it easy' after getting what little adventure she could out of her rapidly withering body, deprived of all the chemtech she was pouring into it.
In that kind of scenario I could see some particularly ambitious Zaunite managing to track her down through a mixture of dumb luck, intense sleuthing and borderline divine providence on a potentially ill-fated quest for revenge after their own family was stepped on in Renata's metal-heeled march to power, they'd find Renata with the help of some sympathetic ionians, vastaya, human, maybe a ninja (whatever they're called in canon) or two- They'd find not the imposing chem-baron queen that brought piltover groveling to its knees but a tired old woman sipping hermal remedies and being doted on by who knows how many fussy handmaidens, generously paid for by underground arenas and smuggling rings-
Our plucky young would-be revenger would snarl their story, demand justice and Renata would sigh, shoo away her attendees and tell her own story, tell this young'un to look at her, really look at her and ask themselves if following in her footsteps on a quest for revenge is really worth it, to let it eat away at the soul the same way it did for her...
While its easy to question the merit of that kind of story it just feels like the kind of story a villain like Renata would produce in the followup of her 'victory' over piltover. Maybe she'd tell them to go home, do something really meaningful, make Zaun a better place, do what she didn't, let her waste away in relative peace... Or just take the shot and stop wasting both of their time.

    Stand Name: [POISON HEART]
    Stand User: Renata Glasc
    Reference: Poison Heart by Ramones
Ability: Allows the user to generate any chemical concoction they know the ingredients of and administer it as a gas. She can also fire projectiles filled with gas that burst on impact.
Seriously though, read the lyrics of Poison Heart and tell me they couldn't be the her inner thinking! Like, it doesn't directly correspond to canon with every word, but many parts do and even the rest could, we just haven't seen it! Gonna post them below. Amazing vid again Skyen!
    [Verse 1]
Well no one ever thought this one would survive
Helpless child, going to walk a drum beat behind
I lock you in a dream, I never let you go
I never let you laugh or smile, not you
    [Pre-Chorus]
Well, I just want to walk right out of this world
''Cause everybody has a poison heart
I just want to walk right out of this world
'Cause everybody has a poison heart
    [Verse 2]
Making friends with a homeless torn up man
He just kind of smiles, it really shakes me up
There's danger on every corner but I'm okay
Walking down the street, trying to forget yesterday
    [Pre-Chorus]
Well, I just want to walk right out of this world
'Cause everybody has a poison heart
I just want to walk right out of this world
'Cause everybody has a poison heart
    [Chorus]
    A poison heart
    A poison heart
    A poison heart, yeah
    [Verse 3]
You know that life really takes its toll
And a poet's gut reaction is to search his very soul
So much their confusion before my eyes
But nothing seems to phase me, and this one still survives
    [Pre-Chorus]
I just want to walk right out of this world
'Cause everybody has a poison heart
I just want to walk right out of this world
'Cause everybody has a poison heart
Well I just want to walk right out of this world
'Cause everybody has a poison heart
    [Chorus]
    A poison heart
    A poison heart
    A poison heart
    A poison heart
    A poison heart
    A poison heart
    A poison heart

I think it would be very interesting to see her win just to explore what she actually wants after she's had her revenge, humiliated and ruined those who wronged her. Would she actually enjoy a life of luxury, or would it be nothing but a bother to her? What would she do when she's given time to think about what she wants out of what's left of her time? If she had a moment to think about the morality of what she's been doing, would she?

The absence of the old witch feels like it speaks to the increasing mixed influence of capitalism, tech, and superficial fashion. Particularly catering to China's fashion-demand for young hyper-thin archetypes. But a recent example of an old witch I loved is Madame Gao from Netflix's Daredevil -- unashamedly wrinkled, walking with a cane, treated with utmost respect by Kingpin, plainly wise, and substantially more powerful than she looked (at least until they watered her down in Defenders...) How I wish someone like her would show up in League or other games as a playable character.

I would love to see a “hero of another story“ style story for Renata. The noble intentions that she has of dismantling the oppressive heads of Piltover could easily be fuel for a redemption arc. It would take time, and would involve a lot of fixing past mistakes, but the idea that Renata has the potential to become a hero by taking down the chem barons and the xenophobic heads of Piltover could make for a very interesting “antihero“ plot
