There's more goth styles than trad goth, and trad goth isn't the "correct way to look goth" or something. I get it completely that when someone says "goth" you expect them to go with more in-depth recognizable styles of goth, but most people who don't really know the subculture nowadays tend towards that weird surface level mall goth-soft goth middle ground. Which is just what happens. They recognize that things like black clothes, lace/netting, hardware, leather, etc are goth even if they don't know the details. But no, saying it's not goth at all would be disingenuous.
