I have a new appreciation of the skill It takes to do this work. I’m here because I watched a video of a novice getting bucked out of a tree and wanted to see what he did wrong. I would NEVER try something like this myself. That’s why we always hire certified pros to cut/prune our trees. THANKS.

It's because if you yell "heads up" people tend to instinctively look up. It's better not to do that so your helmet can protect you. Aside from all that, ground crew should be clear anyway.

I didn’t know you had a CZcams channel. Thought just IG.
I rarely see (what I consider to be) smooth saw skills and piece manipulation in tree videos, I see a lot of ok stuff but you’ve got the production tree worker skills I love to see. Real world stuff, not all the nancy regulated dogma.

EXCELLENT EYES to pick that up. He got a freebie on that one and that makes it all the sweeter. These close calls and small mishaps are ALL great opportunities to learn from. Having it on the video to analyze is huge. I have learned so much from studying video. 10x looking at this clip in slow motion and it's still a bit of a mystery. Looks like the piece rotated slightly and then the top drifted left as the but went right. I AM guessing that is from the limb weight (or lean), which was slightly left (as evidenced by the spike in the severed notch), but it could have been the notch or the sail that caused this top to drift off-center.
So while the reasons for the drift are still unclear there is another good lesson to learn here. The sail of the piece caused it to straighten out and land but first, some feet away from the trunk, then it laid out it's full length from there, unnecessarily extending the drop zone to nearly twice the height of this piece. The width of the notch is going to affect the direction of movement and momentum at separation. At that point, an object in motion will tend to stay in motion. So the traditional notch is going to get the piece moving out and away from the tree, which is not wanted here. Then the tips catching air, straightens the piece out, which effectively makes this piece land even closer to the house.
Opening up the notch to 70 degrees or more would keep the momentum of the piece moving back towards the trunk at separation, and get the tips pointing and moving down, more so than a 45-degree traditional notch. This would have two effects. #1 it would take longer for the air to catch the tips and rotate the but down.. and #2 the but would hit closer to the trunk (thus farther away from the house). I know a wider face can put a good bit more force on the trunk and thus take you for more of a ride, but it would have been a better option here IMO
Of course, you could have just taken a smaller top when you were up there limbing the piece. I can only guess you were playing to the camera. I've done that many times so no criticism there. If you got it... flaunt it! And keep the good videos coming!

Particularly like the falling for friends or relatives segment where the woman says she’ll get husband or ie brother-in-law as was my case to fall root rotted hemlocks for dirt cheap 200 per tree , to much the lady said Makes you shake your head. Safe days !

Be very wary about rigging down on stems with kinks and twists in them like the one 9.54 onwards, there was a young student in the UK around 30 years ago that was killed when the stem with a similar growth feature failed under him when he snatched the top out. If you think about putting a lateral load test to destruction, it'd be that kink that give out first. Stay safe you young uns!
