  • The English Renaissance was the time of new learning; the invention of the printing press and moveable type; a revival of the arts; of war and reformation; devotion and persecution; soul-burdening theological controversies and dilemmas of conscience that affected every wrung upon the social ladder.
But how did this affect the development of English poetry? That’s what we’ll consider in this lecture. Out of this time came one of the most productive periods of English poetry. Renaissance poetry is a cornucopia of new inventions-a relish for the refinement of classical art; a new courtly and anti-courtly attitude; melodious love lyrics; an exuberant excess of love sonnets; and psalms translated into English so touching in their emotional power and so sobering in their plain, unaffected beauty.

The online discussion of Sonnet 33 picked up on the word "whit" in the penultimate line to explore the possible connection to Whitsun and the liturgical celebration of Pentecost (the Sunday when the Holy Spirit inhabited Mary and the Apostles 50 days after Easter). I explored a little further and found striking similarities to the Whitsun Liturgical Reading Veni Sancte Spiritus (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Veni_Sancte_Spiritus) known as the Golden Segment and widely regarded as one of the most beautiful liturgical hymns. The formulation of the Pentecost prayer as a lovers lament echoes the third paragraph in Sidney's Arcadia "But indeed, as we can better consider the sun’s beauty by marking how he gilds these waters and mountains than by looking upon his own face, too glorious for our weak eyes: so it may be our conceits (not able to bear her sun-staining excellency) will better weigh it by her works upon some meaner subject employed." suggesting some deeper meaning in both works.
