In the frozen wasteland of Antarctica, a strange sight greeted an international expedition exploring the Little America exploration bases in 1958: a lone bamboo pole protruding from a massive snowdrift.
Intrigued by this anomaly, the team employed a bulldozer to clear the 23-foot-tall drift, revealing something completely unexpected-the Antarctic Snow Cruiser, a behemoth of a vehicle measuring 56 feet long and nearly 17 feet tall.
Inside the cabin, the belongings of the previous occupants lay untouched, with cigarettes, papers, and magazines scattered about. The expedition noted the vehicle's location and moved on, unaware that this would be the last time the Antarctic Snow Cruiser was ever seen.
The story of the Antarctic Snow Cruiser is one of novelty and folly. Designed by Thomas Poulter for the United States Antarctic Service Expedition of 1939-1941, the cruiser was a product of Poulter's experiences as second-in-command on a 1934 Antarctic expedition.
Convinced of the need for a mobile base camp, Poulter created a vehicle ahead of its time. The cruiser boasted a biplane platform, overhangs to prevent crevice falls, adjustable tire heights, and two diesel engines generating over 300 horsepower-a machine seemingly equipped to conquer the glacial challenges of Antarctica.
However, the Antarctic Snow Cruiser's arrival on the continent on January 15, 1940, was met with immediate misfortune. The wooden ramp used to transport the cruiser onto the Ross Ice Shelf buckled under its immense weight, and only Poulter's quick reflexes saved the vehicle from plunging into the sea.
Then, a critical design flaw became apparent: the cruiser's treadless tires, which Poulter believed would prevent the vehicle from getting stuck in snow and ice, rendered it incapable of traversing the deep snow that blanketed Antarctica. It could, however, move short distances but only when driven in reverse.
Stripped of its intended purpose, the Antarctic Snow Cruiser was relegated to serving as a base building at Little America III before being abandoned along with the rest of the base on December 22, 1940.
In 1946, explorers from Operation Highjump found the vehicle in excellent condition, needing only air in its tires. It was then left to the mercy of the elements until its rediscovery in 1958, after which it vanished from human sight.
The fate of the Antarctic Snow Cruiser remains a mystery to this day, and few clues have been found. The ice shelf that once housed Little America III fractured in the early 1960s, and in 1963, the USS Edisto encountered an ice flow containing remnants of the camp.
It is possible that the cruiser was on this ice flow, either remaining there or plummeting into the sea when the iceberg inevitably split again. Others speculate that the cruiser fell into the ocean when the Ross ice shelf originally calved and now lies beneath the rebuilt ice shelf, its exact location on the seafloor unknown...

I actually really like the shampoo, lol. Give it a shot! Its great when a brand can help my mission and has good products.
the brand sponsorship and your usual narrative lines was pretty good ngl
Well it sounds like you're back on your Adderall again lol.
“Individual results may vary” oooohh like any of ur 15 channels? 🤡

"I know you gentlemen have been through a lot, but when you find the time, I'd rather not spend the rest of this winter TIED TO THIS F--KING COUCH!"
Great Movie!
I love "The Thing" too!!!!
I was watching The Thing a few weeks ago. I skipped back to watch that bit 4 times cause it cracks me up 😂 it's a rare moment of utter hilarity amongst all the horror. I never tire of The Thing, it's still one of my favourite movies
lol !😂
Calm down Gary 🤘🏻😜🤘🏻
Raytheon were surprisingly uncooperative.
Really?
Raytheon uncooperative?
That's SO hard to believe.
Raytheon cooperating would have been MORE suspicious
Sarcasm duly noted.
My thought exactly. Who exactly was surprised by this?
I retired from Raytheon after 26 years, We would go out of our way to be uncooperative
Raytheon not cooperative is Fool proof test if you're a fed
Driving that thing after a few beers would be awesome 😎
Ikr.... Was that a side of curve I just hit.. no that was just a side of a mountain I just clipped.. oh well 😅
Especially in Antarctica, where there aren’t any cops 😉
yea in REVERSE too hahahahaha
Antarctica is one big mystery. Great presentation.
Just like the ocean, it's so interesting.
We aren’t allowed to properly visit incase we wreck the place yet there are expeditions by governments who just leave their entire camp behind to the elements
"Sir, our work is done, should we dismantle the base?"
"Nah, we're good. But don't touch that moss-covered rock over there!"
There is no law preventing you from visiting. That is a myth
That last one concerns me; why would a government agency and Raytheon not be willing to talk to investigators?
Probably more content sensationalism than truth. I work with methanol in the lab all the time. I can’t see how you could mistakenly take it or fail to immediately notice if your drink has been spiked with it.
There is no alcohol allowed down there, and between the boredom and isolation, depression can be a problem for some folks. As can the ability to rationalize a bad idea…
He may have thought he was taking a small enough dose to just enjoy a weak adult beverage. May have even been doing it a a few times without any severe trouble, yet.
Some moonshine have had high levels of methanol but folks could initially consume it without dying or requiring hospitalization, until suddenly they do.
The harmful chemicals produced from metabolizing methanol, like formaldehyde and formic acid can bite you hard and fast when they hit that very narrow tipping point from very small amounts per volume.
You know why: Because the government lies. Absolute power dictates truth and history.
Lol
@williamstearns7490 Funnily enough, the treatment for methanol poisoning is ethanol. It outcompetes methanol for the enzymes that break it down, so the kidneys just excrete the methanol without metabolizing it to formaldehyde and formic acid. Pretty neat, you get drunk and get better.
@@williamstearns7490 fedboi spotted :P
no treads on the tires brillant ,no one did a test run before shipping it out?
They actually did do a test of sort, by driving it on U.S. soil to the port where it was supposed to ship out from. It proved to do quite poorly even on wet asphalt and was found to be underpowered, but they decided to send it out anyway.
I'm hoping the scientists that thought bald tires were the best for getting a vehicle through snow weren't on the payroll....
They could've at least brought along tire chains🤣
The yeti has a new car!
😂😂😂
Made me laugh!
Yeah good power sliding about the place
Yeti still hasn't the money to have an M.O.T done
The way you intergraded the keeps sponsor was hilarious
The snow cruiser would have worked better if the tyres were not smooth. However even when it was touring the states it struggled to perform.
How could anyone think tread-less tires was a good thing?
@@RipplenatorGenius engineer makes such an elementary mistake.. sad.
@@nukemall3678that plus an entire team who watched it happen and just went with it lmao
Literally one of, if not the dumbest design choices I've heard in a while
@Ripplenator I think he was thinking about the principle of weight dispersion (and just forgot about track systems) and was thinking abo- yeah idfk dude I'm tryna play devils advocate and failing miserably lol, this was a massive and very odd oversight
I honestly think Disch worked for the Soviets (or something along those lines) and was ultimately picked up at a meeting point.
His "vanishing" was planned and he returned to the people he actually worked for. That's the most popular theory I've ever read in regards to Disch and it makes sense. He honestly could have literally just disappeared, it's possible, but I think there's way more to it than we'll ever know.
Interesting theory
Glad you got a sponsor here, I’ll watch it for the channel
Glad you got a sponsor :)
The Shoggoths got them!
🤫
It's shaped shifted to look like a Bar Tent and they walked straight in the door mouth !
It was the giant penguins of Leng that got them.
@@justinp103 They were inside the beer tent waiting for them ! 🐧🐧🐧🐧🐧🐧🐧🐧🐧🐧
HAHAHAHAHAHAHA good one!!
As long as they don't disturb the unknown creatures frozen in the ice they will be fine.
I can’t believe they went with treadless tires 😂
Snow cruiser driver: “Okay, everybody, remember where we parked…”
I always love hearing theories of Nazi escapees after WW2.
Same! Any theories you believe to be the strongest around Hitler, Nazi, etc.?
I've heard about the Nazis going to Argentina, conspiracy theories about them secretly taking over the US, and even going to the moon, but Antarctica is a new one.
Because Hitler did escape in the forty’s. Via an underground bunker that led all the way to the Berlin airport. He died in Argentina in 1962
Keeps me up at night
I love hearing all the theories of Antarctica. I believe there are so many answers to mysteries to be found there. Antarctica is endlessly fascinating.
You'd think they'd of just made new tires for the snow cruiser instead of abandoning it. Diesel engines can run 5-6x longer then a gasoline engine. They're very durable. She'd probably still be usable today if they hadn't abandoned her.
Right? And I'd LOVE to have that thing.
I believe the tires were a one of a kind special production but it seems like they sure could have run a second production with tread! I agree about the diesel engine, it would still be running today.
@Twerkulies
“You'd think they'd *have* just made…”. There. Fixed that for you.

This guy's voice makes hair loss sound as bad as nuclear armageddon.
#4: gravity anomaly-leave the Predator's pyramid ALONE!!
What is even more interesting are the no-fly zones there , a friend who did a few "milk runs" to re-supply the bases there was told NOT to waver from his flight path , when he asked why he was told he would be intercepted ,when he asked by who ? the answer was just stick to your orders and follow the flight path ,hmmmm
I know an Air National Guard guy who goes there 2-3 times a year, I’ll have to ask him about it. He’s a loadmaster, not a pilot, but I’m sure he could shed some more light on that for me. I’m pretty sure international treaties say you can’t put weapons there, but… I wouldn’t be surprised if every country was violating it.
Any info from you friend yet ?
@@Sniperboy5551 ya ask the pilot if the earf is flat
The Snow Cruiser looked well ace!!! Way ahead of it's time, would have loved a ride in it!!!

the diesel does freeze and will not drive the engine...
Last one - I wonder if the guy and/or others were operating their own still and making hooch. That's why I stick with prune-o.
That is the prevailing theory, which was not mentioned in this video. The theory goes that they ran out out of the regular alcohol they brought for the season, and this guy happened to be a heavy drinker. Instead of experiencing the withdrawals and simply live out there sober for months he decided to drink the methanol they had in the stock room to get his fix. If true this illustrates the true nature of the disease of alcoholism. I have heard anecdotes about people drinking various forms of alcohol when their ethanol supply ran dry. Aftershave, sanitizer, other solvents. As a recovering addict with seven years sober I do understand the form of desperation that could drive a man to risk drinking poison like methanol to stop the cravings and withdrawals from occurring. Luckily I myself had a stroke in 2017 due to mixing drugs, and I was in a coma for a month and ended up with anoxic brain damage. That was May 29th 2017 and I have not used illicit drugs to get high since that date. Anyhow, this theory seems very plausible to me. The intentional poisoning theory seems very implausible. If you put enough methanol in someones drink to kill them they would absolutely notice right away and stop drinking it. How else could you intentionally poison a man with methanol?
"DSS Wormald stated it was not credible to believe he had deliberately drunk the methanol, when he had ready access to a large supply of alcohol. Marks had recently entered a new relationship, had nearly completed important academic work and had no financial problems. He had promptly sought treatment for an illness that confused him, and there was no reason to suspect suicidal intent."
@@burningchrome70 The report I heard said that the team had been partying every night and had run themselves out of alcohol..
Distilling ethanol isn’t difficult, you just have to discard the fore shot, maybe the first 100mL or so. Even then, if the ethanol concentration is high enough, it’ll prevent most methanol toxicity which is only due to the formaldehyde and formic acid it metabolizes into. The treatment for methanol poisoning is ethanol, so you can get medically drunk which is neat. Sounds more like a suicide or desperate attempt at getting drunk with hand sanitizer or something like that.
Amazing video as usual.

Great music in this one. Always interested in military and elite mysteries, thanks
Beautiful segue into KEEPS 🏆👍🏻
We need some Dark Docs on Hair Loss.
Just shave it all off, better than putting some chemical BS up there!
That snow cruiser looks like something that would emerge from Thunderbird 2.
You'd have thought they would have tested the snow cruiser or even just how the tyres would grip on actual snow beforehand wouldn't ya !? DOH !!
Thanks Dark 5 for another deep dive into the mysterious 👍🏴❤️
That was not a Goodyear in Antarctica 1940.
There are more people who have perished from accidentally drinking methanol than you could throw a moonshine still at.
Love your content - keep it coming.
Thank you for sharing!
That commercial was really funny. I loved how it took me by surprise
I liked it too and I was happy to see he worked different Antarctic themed photos and video into it.
6:24 so they fired flares into the sky and pointed floodlights into the sky and suddenly someone saw strange lights in the sky? Now that's... that's something...
300hp????? That's not a lot for such a huge vehicle
Designers examined the ice crystals on the surface of Antarctica and realized it had similarities to certain types of sand. They found that tread-less flotation tires worked on the sand so assumed it would work on the ice. Oops.
The Snow Cruiser could pull its tires inside of the fenders where the exhaust from the diesel engines kept the rubber warm to prevent cracking from the severe cold. This same feature along with the long front and rear overhang let it push itself over cracks in the ice.
Biggest dark 5 mystery? Hair loss lmao
I cannot tell you how much I appreciate you bringing back the intro! ❤ Thank you!
Out of the 5 I feel we would probably solve the gravity anomaly sooner than the others.
Glad to check out anyone who sponsors your great videos.
Chillin like a villain with the Dark5.
haha the way you go into the hair loss keeps
Was pretty darn funny
I was in here and thought it was part of a creepy video lol
I believe the narration is perfect. Thank you for this video
Carl R. Disch was 26 years old.
I absolutely love these videos

Every Dark 5 upload, is going to be a good upload. ❤👍🏻❤
That was the weirdest segway into a sponsor I have ever seen.
Keeps was in Antarctica, pretty sick. Never seen a bald man in Antarctica.
I know at least one currently there
It's incredible that something THAT big was only powered by 300 hp. My SUV has that!
the base is in Mar del Plata, province Buenos Aires.
Threadless tyres the snow 😂😂😂😂 good one
I've read about tbe Australian dieing from methanol but i dont remember any one mention the fact that her worked for ratheon.
"Why don't we just... wait here for a little while... see what happens? "
I always look forward to the Dark channels new videos. Great videos.
Treadless tyres. For getting around in snow. Truly ahead of it's time.
Very interesting stories and well told.
Thanks!
My great, great grandfather , an eskimo chief named Ugmock the Squaw stretcher, swears his tribe found the huge vehicle and later traded it for 2 tons of strawberry ice cream !
Cheers Dark 5. Cheers.
Like an auctioneer wow 😂
They couldn't have made new tires with treads?
Smooth Tyres, like a Chocolate tea pot 🤣😂
They couldnt just put chains on the tires on another mission..? 😂
How do you know where something is, but consider it “lost”
I respect it keep goin
I will admit, my first thought on the first ice-vehicle was: Obviously, the Soviets stole it. Of course, it isn't necessarily probable, but that was my first thought.
It sounds like the narrator is whispering and panicking \o/
🎵 Boop-a-doop beep-a-deeep beeepy booopy booopy 🎶
Awesome Episode! Very in-depth and interesting! These are rare mysteries, that are not brought out into the light enough! The first video seems like industrial espionage! We know that Germany had a base in Antarctica before anyone else did! The last video, maybe this person SAW too much, maybe, KNEW too much! They keep Antarctica secret!
It wouldn't surprise me if a severe alcoholic drank methanol. If it smells the drink, go for it. I was with one of those.
Me 2 life is so much better without it me thinks.
That would make sense if alcohol wasn't readily available anyway
The most important Antarctic mystery. Was it MacReady or Childs who was the thing.
Neither of em. That's the twist. The film wants you to believe that one of them is the thing. Most of the time when a film wants you to believe something you shouldn't.
all they needed to do was put chains on tyres and vehicle would have worked fine
Yea let’s not have treads on our tires that are gonna be traversing across snow and ice…😂
I think I will make a model of this vehicle. Something very different and easy to make with some thin styrene sheets and spare parts from my tank models.
kudos on landing the keeps sponsership
Got to remember to waych on .75x speed or speech is too fast
That hair loss plug caught me off guard
imagine 3000 years from now a new civilization finds the snow cruiser in the middle of a field.
When he said "bulldoser" my mind made me hear it like in Payday 2. Trauma is real.
1:43 So it was from before a time there was ice in Antarctica
The sixth unsolved mystery is where is my hair?
Slick tyres on snow...
That vehicle was flawed in so many ways, wasn't warm enough, needed lots of fuel, it's a perfect example of what happens when engineers design on paper without real world knowledge.
Treadless tires...in the snow. Yeah, I guess the inventor has never driven in a northern winter before.
Hey Dark5 why are u remaking ur old videos???
So the Barely Mobile Base got stuck ? Who would've thought "Chains on Snow Tires" was an Advanced Concept...?
Alienware had the fan set up you mentioned. Back before and shortly after, dell bought them
The real mystery here is why an "engineer" would think racing slicks on ice would be a good idea 😂
Owch, not a good look for good year tires.
and i thought a head and shoulders commercial was bad enough :(
Treadless tires seem like a brilliant idea
For Formula One cars, yes. Also, drag races and NASCAR vehicles.
