- After so many requests to head down to Mad O'Rourke's Pie Factory in Tipton, I decided to head down there and try one of their famous pies. Although, I didn't decide to go with the challenge on this occasion I may return in the future!

Stumbled upon your channel. From Sweden here. I gotta say, you're one of the best food review channels I've come across. It feels like I'm actually there, driving across the UK trying out authentic UK restaurants. No fancy video-editing or nothing, it's proper food review. Keep it up!
Thank you!! That's very kind of you to say.
I've only discovered it recently. Great stuff.
Agree 100% Gary. That wasn’t a pie. It was a hotpot with a bit of pastry on top.
Indeed Peter.
Agreed not a pie.
@@step4798It is a pie. Just not a pie shop style pie. Fish pie, cottage pie, shepards pie, Cumberland pie, apple pie, etc etc are all considered forms of pie…
@@step4798 a type of food made with meat, vegetables, or fruit covered in pastry and baked:
Literally from Cambridge dictionary.
@@xaoc6084 Look up the definition of a Pie, it is enclosed by pastry, furthermore look up the definition of enclosed, surrounded or closed off on all sides, by just putting pastry on top does not make it a pie.
I would have been gutted if i had gone to a place called the world famous pie factory and was presented with a bowl of beef stew with a piece of pastry on top. Excellent review as always.
Lol. Cheers Jason!
This.
This used to be my local for a couple of years in the 90’s. The cow pie was great as was the festive Rudolph pie (contained pigs in blankets) with antlers coming out of it.
I am of the opinion that a pie needs to be fully contained in pastry and is not just a pot of stew with a pastry lid.
I completely agree with you.
Pie's in pots with just pastry lids are called pot pies.
@@janetpendlebury6808 they are called "take this back and bring me a real pie".
Shortcrust or suet crust pastry as well.
@@dansharpe2364 🤣🤣😆
Hi Gary. Great video again. I live about 10 minutes from the pie factory. It used to be owned by an eccentric Irish man called Collum O'Rouke. He built up a chain of pubs all over the west midlands and surrounding areas. His first pub was the little pack horse in Bewdley. All the pubs were very quirky and themed. There was the sausage factory, upton muggery, the dry Dock (with a real narrow boat for a bar), the henhouse and many others. The first opened in the late 80's and he sold the chain about 15 to 20 years ago to a pub chain who ruined business. The pie factory is the only one to have survived in its original form. The pub was originally called the Dowty Arms. There used to be boxing matches held upstairs and a claim to fame is that Frank Skinner performed there before he was famous. In the old days, the Dan Pie was much larger. You had whole potatoes, whole carrots, and a mountain of meat. I once had at the pack horse a huge dan pie followed by a large steamed treacle pudding with lashings of hot custard. The pudding was big enough for a family! It was a real belly buster of a meal. I'm really glad you liked your experience, keep up the good work!
Thank you Tim. Very kind and all the best.
The desperate Dan pie with the pastry horns OHHHHH YESSSSSS!
He had a couple over here in Worcester too. The kipper house and out in the villages bradley green he had one I remember eating in. Didn't he have the crooked house once to ?
Good info, interesting.👍
I had a Desperate Dan pie in the Little Pack Horse many years ago. It was huge.
Another great review. Simple, no nonsense, honest opinion. A class above other CZcamsrs.
Wow. Thank you!
That looked lovely, but a proper pie is completely enclosed with pastry
No Gary, that's not a pie without the filling being encased. The only exception I can think of is shepherd's pie. Just my opinion of course.🙂 Keep up the great reviews.
It looks a cross between a scotch egg and a chicken kiev
Yes, I think a pie needs to be encased to be a "pie".
I dunno. Marco never encased his pies, just lidded them and they're absolutely banging
That’s a pot pie not a pie. Both can be delicious, but a true pie takes more skill to bake as getting the crust on the bottom and the top takes a degree of skill not necessary for a pot pie.
As others have noted, that is a pot pie. I'd say a pie should be encased in pastry.
No, by definition, it's not a pie unless it's encased in pastry. That takes a lot of time and effort, which aren't exactly priorities, nowadays. Nevertheless, it looked tasty, and you take what you can get in this day and age. Worth a visit, certainly. Great review, as usual Gary!
Thank you Ian and you're spot on.
Agree, pastry topped pots of beef - not pies in any way.
Agreed, by that logic someone could slap some pastry on a pot noodle and call it a pie.. But the filling did look amazing!
What's a cottage pie then? Or a fish pie?
@@dogcatdogable Both are mashed potatoes on top a tasty filling. You can call them "pies" if you like, just like some people call Sunak a PM, or Biden a President. Cheers!
I discovered this channel a few weeks ago. I'm glad I did. Gary seems like a genuinely nice bloke. 🤝🏻
Thanks and welcome!! Much appreciated.
Agreed 👍
It's great to someone who gives a real honest opinion.
He is 💯a great down to earth guy..rare on utube 🎉
I've been to The Pie Factory a few times as I'm from the Black Country, and I've never had a bad meal from there. You should try the Mix Grill. It comes out on a shovel 😂. I think what you tried was very basic from The Pie Factory. The lamb and mint pie is exceptional and the Andy Murray curry Pie is to die for. They do their own ales (called Sledgehammer) as well. It's a brilliant place to eat. Also, there's a challenge pie called the Desperate Dan cow pie. That brings me on to battered chips. Battered chips are a staple in the Black Country. You'll find them more often than not at most chip shops. They are 100% better than regular chips, in my opinion. I'm glad you liked your visit and keep uo the good work 😊👍🏻.
Great stuff Andy. Loved it mate, I've heard about the mixed grill. Very quirky!
I definitely feel disenfranchised when I'm presented with a pie with just a hat on. A pie isn't a pie without the meat being fully surrounded by a delicious pastry.
Indeed.
you could not surround the meat with pastry as the amount of gravy would just make it soggy.
there was only meat in the pie. no onions or anything else.
Yes, not in this case but generally speaking.@@davidsworld5837
It's technically a pie. However it is a Pot pie and should be described as such on the menu.
Yes, it’s a pot pie. That’s what you usually get when you have a pie in an Irish pub.
Strewth, what a terrific Beef Pot Pie. Melt-in-the-mouth meat, marvellous gravy and a crispy puff pastry hat. Battered chips elevate that side to a new level. Agree that a runny egg yolk would have completed the ‘kibbeh balls’ styled black pudding. Another great review Gazza.
Well said 💯agreed..👏👏
Great choice for the weather as it is. Steamy goodness and generous chunks of well cooked beef and yes, the gravy's consistency and colour looked perfeckt. That episode was definitely mouth watering. Pity about the egg, the devils in the detail.
Oh yes. Glad you liked the video Paul.
Thats why you should always ask your waiter before ordering
This channel gets better and better.
Thank you James!
The pie filling looked really tasty, although I think the gravy may have been a little thin to have been fully encased in a pastry crust. Battered chips huh, I hope they come with a side order of a defibrilator!!
That would be more than needed Greeno. Will email you very soon mate.
That pie looked delicious! Thanks for another honest review
My pleasure!
Mad O'Rourkes. The scene of many a night out after work in Birmingham in days gone by.
Top place back then. Looking forward to finding out what it's like now.
Lol. Hope you enjoyed it!
It’s actually just outside Wolverhampton, not Birmingham. It’s proper Black Country. I lived about 10 mins from there as a kid but moved to London in ‘84. Nice to see you showcasing such places, Gary. It was always brilliant back then so glad to see it’s maintained the standard. Great review.
Thank you mate - apologies.
It's actually nearer to Dudley if we're being picky!

That "pie" looked fantastic!!! The melt in the mouth beef looked delicious & the pastry topping was superb. I agree that the chips are probably not the healthiest, but they sure looked good!! I agree about your comment on the starter. The egg would have been better had it been more runny & would have helped with the dryness of the black pudding cake, though I think I'd still have managed to eat it. At least there were no mushrooms anywhere to be seen 🤣
Luckily no mushrooms, Sandra. Don’t feel like I’ll be that lucky for much longer!
Hi Gary, happy new year and all the best for 2024!
I had no choice but to freeze the video at 01:26...The "and Wales" made me laugh too much.
I honestly believe to fry, poach or boil an egg to the extent of losing the runny yolk should be made illegal!!! I love egg yolk so much!
That was not just a beef pie that was a beef stew encased in pastry, you had so much meat there! That was a fantastic review. Thank you.

That's the best pie I have ever seen. Such a great review. Your food reviews are the best. Thanks 👍👍👍👍

A pastry topping on a beef stew does not constitute a pie for me.
What about a cottage pie, I’m with you though a pie should be encased in pastry.

@@GaryEats I obviously meant 'food' 😄😄
According to Oxford English Dictionaries, a pie is defined as "a baked dish of fruit, or meat and vegetables, with a top and base of pastry.
Indeed Jamie. I have to agree it needs to be encased to be a pie in my opinion.
Regardless of if the pies are indeed pies, it's great to see a local restaurant serving quality food doing so well amid a climate of cookie-cutter chains. More power to them.
Exactly!
Gary, the food looked absolutely beautiful. I liked the look of the chips' brilliant price, another great review 👍
Cheers Paul. The chips were superb!

Thanks for the review Gary and Mr C. Would have liked that pie dish with mash and cabbage as looked like stew with puff pastry topping. I prefer a proper encased pie personally but not a bad effort
Thank you!!
It always amazes me how so called chefs in the UK can't cook a decent fried or poach egg. If you were ever wanted to begin to work for the Roux brothers you had to demonstrate you could cook a fried or poach egg before you were even allowed next to the pot wash. As it should be if you strive for excellence
That would be a poached egg in uk.
i think Gordon Ramsey adopted this tactic from the Roux brothers too when he started out working for them
Fair comment Andrew. All the best.
The actual story behind the Roux story was , it’s not just if you could cook an egg , they wanted too know how much care and attention you put into the preparation and cooking of it , the reason being if you put a lot of effort into making it perfect then you would be the same with all penetration and cooking .
Thank you Gary good review on pies where wold we be without them
You're too kind Caroline - thank you.
Hello Gary, nice to see you again. Keep the video going. I watch you every night I think your videos are amazing. Love to meet you one day. Save travels and keep smiling
Hi Scott. Much appreciated for watching mate, one day for sure. Thank you and take care.
Nice one Gary. Four of us visited Mad O'Rourke's a couple of months ago and it was rammed, I had to park on the street, as the large car park was full, so it is very popular. We only had pies and chips and agreed we would all return. I had the steak and kidney pudding, which was superb: my wife had the veggie pie, son had a steak pie and his girlfriend the lamb pie. We could not fault any of them and, as you stated, the battered chips are a bit good.
Great to hear and I'm glad you enjoyed it!
Gravy looked a little too runny for my liking , i probably would have ordered some mash to soak it up. Chips looked lovely 👍🇮🇪
No problem Jay 👍🏼👍🏼
I’m so glad I found your channel, your videos are amazing and so much better than so many other clickbait youtubers 😊 you seem so genuine and lovely, keep it up please !!!
Thank you Kelly - very kind!
Despite being the Pie Factory, the quirkiest thing about the place is the mixed grills. They come served on the head of a shovel. Some people say the Pie Factory is a tourist trap but I think that does it an injustice; the food there is well worth the money.
Might need to give them a go next time!
The pie with just a pastry lid is a huge deal breaker for me. Food looks lovely and the starter is really innovated. I love my egg as they've done it.
No problem 👍🏼
I've been there and I totally agree. Personally I think it's overrated although you can obviously do a lot worse. I've found the best pies to be Lancashire/North East, especially from a standard bakery.
The mixed grill here is underwhelming and overly difficult to eat off the shovel… but the ribs & chips are to die for 🤤… also I don’t rate their pies without a bottom… their frozen take out pies are much better as they are fully encased with pastry.
a pie is NOT a pie without a bottom!
Slab of frozen pastry on top of the filling! Famous since pub pies started looking like this in the 1990's
Yes, I think a pie needs to be encased to be a "pie".

Been there loved it. Battered chips are a black country speciality! These days chips are mainly bought in ready to cook bags from the wholesaler, cooken in tasteless oil. Only a few places left that give their chips and customers the royal treatment. Watching that made my stomach growl and mouth drool. Well done!😅
I wish I could have more.
Brilliant review Gary. What a quirky place you found, love to have a visit. Thanks for another stonkingly good vlog. 🙂
Glad you enjoyed it! I think it has to be encased in pastry for it to be a pie but that's my opinion.
One of my pet hates is stew with a lid on being called a pie.
Indeed.
I'm always wary of the "world famous" repeated non stop.
Real shame about the egg. Otherwise it looked a great starter.
It's a pie if it's just a top crust. Full pastry top and bottom is a tart. The pastry looked absolutely lovely. Not a bad price for a good meal out.
Another excellent and fair review. I would have given this the same mark as you Gary. It's a real good pie !!
Andrew you wouldn't call a pork pie a tart.A tart has pastry on the bottom and a lot of the time the sides aswell
😂😂who cares..a pie a tart.. i do think it' can be a regional thing...our scholl dinners in the 70's has a " Manchester Tart" it was pastry nased the jam and custard..no top..nom nom....battered chips wow Gary...for a treat only i think..🎉enjoyd the vlog...looked yummy🎉

A pork pie is a classic example of a real pie, top, bottom and sides encasing the filling! Looked very nice tho. Great video!

Lovely with a bit of mustard or pickle
Pastry on a beef stew does not make it pie. A pie is pastry enclosing the meat/veg. chicken.
The meat looked wonderful - as did the black pudding cake.

Thank you Flower. He had one, loved them. Yes, I think a pie needs to be encased to be a "pie".
I mean you’re speaking about a pie shop style pie (which I suppose they should do as they’re self styled as a pie place). However a pod isn’t just enclosed… there are countless variations of pie which are only topped. It’s wrong to suggest otherwise

I make my own pies, short crust bases and a flakey top, but, the fillings of course are most important! I have to bake in bulk with these. Deep pies that are filled, no half measures. Chicken and vegetable curried pies, Steak pies, ham and potato pies. All have their own gravies. The gravy truly is key! I make all the filling the day before so they marinate in the fridge overnight. The steak ones as the most popular as I make a thick red wine, herb, peppery gravy that has to be a good thick gravy. 👍👍👍👍👍👍😀
Delicious. Can I taste one? Lol.
Hi Gary, been watching your videos from Day 1 and you're the only food reviewer I watch even though I don't particularly go for some of the foods that you review. A very fair and entertaining review!
It's particularly impressive that you managed to capture the audio despite the extremely challenging background noise. Some great camera shots in this one too.
I'm fascinated to try battered chips, though I remain unconvinced by a pie with only the top made of pastry.
My only recommendation is that Tipton is very proudly part of the Black Country, with pies like this being part of the local heritage. It's totally forgivable as you're not a local, but introducing it as 'just outside Birmingham' misses chance to highlight the Black Country and its proud towns such as Dudley. There's a great museum nearby called the Black Country Living museum which is worth a visit.
Keep it up Gary and Cameraman!

Had battered chips before, but it's not very healthy so I save them for special occasions. They are full of saturated fats and other things I won't bore you with. Another fantastic review in the bag, Gary. Havd yourself an absolutely wonderful rest of your day and speak to you very soon. 🍻😊
Yes, definitely saved for special occasions otherwise I'll need to carry around a defibrillator with me.
My wife is locally sourced too.. lol...... 😊 Those chips looked AMAZING......as did the Pie. What a fantastic review mate. You present such an amiable review that they are always such a pleasure to watch 😊😊😊😊
Lol!! You're very kind (and funny).
🎉🎉🎉 Enjoyable channel.
Glad you enjoy it!
