- After comments about the menu system and wether it makes making sounds difficult, I thought I'd make one from scratch.

We are so lucky to have SonicState.
indeed we are.
I'm not
You are, you just don't realize it.
I realize it's kinda off topic but do anyone know of a good site to stream newly released series online?
@Finnley Deacon I use flixzone. Just search on google for it :)
analog simplicity with deep digital programming if you want to dive that deep. well designed synth. the teams involved in this instrument have done a god job . future classic.
At 7:05 I got an email "You have authorized a payment of 999 USD"
Lol I just got an email from Roland about warranty. Weird glitch x
please do more of these (not necessarily on the deepmind, i just love to see and hear you making those crazy patches :) )
me too :)
b4wd0DD great idea!
Agreed, there needs to be a regular "patch from scratch with nick batt(ch)" segment on Sonicstate
Nick, you are such a class act. Thanks much for your efforts.
I would definitely pay for a Nick preset pack. How the fuck does he do this with every fuckin synth. Korg ms-20m patches I'd definitely buy.
CooperMan.inC Studios check this website. MS20 patches galore. 20patch.constructingtowers.com/patch
Yeah, know it, the site with the infinite amount of copies of the pseudo-paraphonic patch, got some really good stuff too though.
Love that Nick's subconsciously channeling Barbieri/Sylvian circa Tin Drum; influences imbedded deep in the DNA of our youth. ;)
Yeah, a lot of Barbieri in this patch!
I hope "DNA" is a reference? :)
Nick, thank you sooo much for all the work you do with unerring intuition for the things we really want to know. Just awesome. Thank you :)
The menu diving on this synth looks pretty pleasant and clean with a decent size screen and visual feedback on most of it makes it allot less hidden to me.
This channel continues to put out quality content. Keep up the good work.
I'd love more patch making vids on different machines. great idea!
Yes please!
Love the shortcuts for selecting modulation sources. In this example, you still have two envelopes available for modulating the noise level for example, plus lots of other sources to play with for making new expressive sounds. Blows the original Juno series away really, and so much cheaper. My local music shop was selling the Juno 6 for £799 in the 80s. That was a lot of coin in today's money. Very impressed by this instrument.
Love the quirkiness of the patch and how you demonstrated the sound design capabilities of the dm12.. thanks, this helped me a lot...also pushed the dm12 up a couple of slots on my ever so neverending want list :)
Wonderful unusual patch, watching the process I realized I had to calibrate my VCFs because de self oscillation was different for each voice, thanks 🔝
Thanks for making these videos. This one is helpful AND inspiring.
I love the nonchalant way you make something that sounds fucking brilliant. Got a deepmind last night and it's great to see what you can get out of it.
You're spoiling us with fascinating DeepMind videos, Nick! Not that I'm complaining of course - it's great to finally get a look at the patch creation process.
For those complaining about menu diving on the DM12, try and program some sounds on something like the Kurzweil K2000 and then rethink your life.
lykenthropy 96 k2000 is a NIGHTMARE.
You make a great point comparing this to a synth they stopped producing 15 years ago. Maybe not the one you thought though.
Or a Korg Prophecy
*wants to buy death sticks*
The menu diving doesn't even seem that bad on the Deepmind. Maybe that's cause I've programmed on a lot of late 80s and 90s rack synths though lol
Always a treat to see master at work!
Very cool masterclass in synthesis. Thanks Nick!
Really appreciate it, to see you do a patch from scratch. I've been very temptated to buy the deepmind12 from the start when the audio-examples where coming up. But I've been feeling put off by the menu-diving and general learning curve by it all. But I guess I'm getting it now. Sounds fantastic.
Did you get one? The learning curve is nil compared to learning synthesis in general so it was a great first poly for me. I don’t want any others!
Hammer, Nick, danke! Der Deepmind ist eine zeitlose Inspirationsquelle.
great video..... I loved it when you just played the resonance on the filter, I never actually knew that could be done. I'd use that patch at a breakdown with masses of reverb and stereo delay. I'd then want a repeated sequence with that patch that i could just improvise over for hours. I've not had a good day today but this video has somewhat brightened it up slightly thank you.
Thanks Nick. Best demo of this synth so far. With a few less bells and whistles. No effects at last.
Excellent!!! both the synth and the patch you've made
God, I love this synth!
You haven't experienced menu diving until you've made a patch on the Akai Miniak. In comparison the Deepmind is an absolute delight
*LOL* yes, I know what you are talking about
Ha! I tell people the same thing. *ONE* (1!) knob and a tiny calculator screen for a surprisingly deep 3 oscillator virtual analog. Akai could release a _good_ knob-heavy Miniak 2 but the synth scene has scared them off after their analog ventures..
Myself and others were wrong about Behringer. They aren't perfect but here's the thing... None of the other synth companies are perfect. None.
I really like my DM6. The way it sits there and doesn't take up much room but has so much sound potential! It's hefty. Its sound design capabilities are quick. The FX are powerful. And yet, there are still people that never owned one and feel capable of judging it harshly. Seriously. People judge Behringer synths much harsher than the others. Behringer could have proved them right had they taken the easy route. But they did not.
They came into the scene as music muckrakers but they asked synth heads what they wanted, how they wanted it, and provided it without being greedy. People should be rooting for Behringer. They exposed just how ridiculous the prices of synths can be and we might not have questioned prices accurately. Sure, not every company has Behringer's manufacturing resources but some do! These are the companies that needed a good kick in the pants and Behringer obliged.
Now it's time for these others to evolve or Behringer will leave them in the dust. Thanks Uli, Midas, and the entire Music Tribe group. Their sincerity is now obvious and i'm excited to see what they will do next.
Have you seen their channel? They have their engineers listening to people making music, the reactions aren't fake or overdramatized, they're genuine. They also listen, as you said. Like really listen. It's insane.
Master of synthesis
Great sound designer.
Very cool sound.
Brilliant! Thanks Nick.
That patch sounded great, Nick, and thanks for the extra video (and thanks to everyone behind the scenes)! I think Behringer hit it outta the park with the Deepmind, looks awesome.
I don't really understand the aversion to the edit pages, either. They don't seem hard to use, and it's not like one needs to go deep into them to get to the desired parameter. And if Behringer only included parameters they could fit on the front panel, the Deepmind would have much fewer features, and be less flexible and versatile. Would those people really want that? Just so there's no edit pages? I appreciate those extra features.
And I think it sounds good! - Especially with the multiple unison modes with detune (right on the front panel!). That filter is definitely nice, too.
Sorry for the long comment, heh. If anyone reads this, thanks to Nick and everyone else who make these videos happen. Fantastic content.
lol@ Nick, he has the bug, and we all love it too, more more!
interesting just playing the filter, great demo and as others have said, thankyou sonic state. best synth demos in the world, cheers Nick your laid back but informative demos of new gear is truthful and entertaining.
Wow - I'm really impressed. Overall the sounds of DeepMind 12 is not my cup of tea I fear, but this patch is superb!
Nick you are an inspiration and a scholar
AllNightDayDream and an acrobat!
Man, that's a great patch! Thanks you!
in exactly 6:20 he created and unheard of beautiful patch. This is a man who is passionate about his work. I hope to achieve such a level.
Thanks, great sound and i think its easy to program with the menu.
Awesome!
Thanks Nick. 😀
Looking forward to making patches. I am used to Rolands where 95 percent of the presets are horrific. This has some decent presets to start off from what I have heard.
Bloody BEAUTIFUL!!!
Your great st ambient downtempo stuff Nick,
What a modulation path you invented... so nice results!
Excellent video, thanks!
03:35 the patch made me think of Plaid especially the Tekkonkinkreet soundtrack they made :)
A master at work.
The tweakers asking the questions don't make music. They are the collectors. Back ion the day we turned a synth on and if it sounded good we bought the thing. I never knew anyone who carried on like today's synth tweakers and I met a lot of people who made a lot of records.
"Records" Granddad? Lol
(Only joking, I'm 58 and I remember there was a lot of tweaking in those days too.)
If people just want to mess around with sound then what’s it to you? Live and let live, friend.
I confess I had no idea where you were going with modulating the LFO with the Filter - that seemed to reverse the traditional direction of the routing. But, after a number of other surprising and inscrutable steps on your 'from scratch' journey, wow, what a unique and musical result! (Nice notes too.) Respect.
Nick Batt is like the Bob Ross of synth patches.
Great Sound making !
Thanks Nick!
you made it sound like one of my old Korg X5 patches!
This is why I like the System 1: even a novice like me can get good sounds out of it. This looks pretty intimidating. It does offer a LOT more potential though, so that is really cool. Maybe one day when I get more used to working with synths.
The man knows what he's doing. That's for sure.
Be interesting to see how the programmer App works with the Deep Mind. It looks like it will (hopefully) make the functions available via the menu system much more accessible. Saying that the menu system on this looks pretty easy to use.
Great as always! :)
King of reviews
I always have enjoyed sound editing. This machine has good capabilities for adjusting and routing for the the additive style. It has a fun styling looking mechanics, maybe because I like all those small screen editing features. A synth for me.
I LOVE it! Thank u mate :D
Really nice patch, Nick. I think i'm about 80% there into selling my P'08 and replacing it with this. There's so much bang for the buck here.
@ghost mall Haha, you know what, I sold it, and replaced it with the Deepmind. I regretted it. Sold the deepmind. It's funny you just replied to this now, because I just picked up a Prophet Rev2 last Friday! So I'm back where I always should have been :)
I really like the sound of this synth. Seems like it would be good for film scores more studio friendly, and really has that 80's film score sound
So good. I’ve seen this several times now. I keep coming back for more nuggets of wisdom.
What a great little weapon this is going to be
Indeed it is a venerable sonic weapon
Hello, I've been studying this synth for a while now and seriously interested in getting one, only question I have that no one can answer yet is if I can do microtuning on it? That is tuning individual keys to quarter notes! To be able to play middle eastern microtonal scales. If not is there any trick to do that? Thanks!
Nick you the Man!!
Nick, you're a master programmer.
Hi!
I need help..
i tried to do a patch from scratch, using nothing but the resonance and the frequency from the filter at the beginning. Just like in this video. But it seems like the pitch of the filter is moving up and down (in dissonance.) Each time i press a key on my keyboard the tone of the filter is different. It doesn't KYBD-slider is all the way up. In this video i think the tone of each key is always the same. Is my the filter of my deepmind broken or something? I thougt that maybe some detuning on the Keyboard would be the reason for this, but the pitch of my filter is shifting even when i'm using my Laptop as MidiController, too. Please help..
Greetings!
Great demo. Can you make Buchla -like sounds with this synth? Thanks.
Linear FM via LFO filter mod nice!
Can you actually control the LFO depth with an Envelope on the DM12?
Excellent!
that sub is amazing
feels like engaging the Boost button (below Highpass slider) muddied up low mids, now I'm wondering if lifting the Highpass a bit (while Boost is engaged) would arrive at some sweetspot compromise between having weight to low end and clarity?
you could be right, that is possible too
Let me guess before watching: PWM involved.
Edit: I was wrong. But very nice patch!
I don't understand the part where Nick tuned the VCF to match the Oscillators?
Thanks Nick. Can't help but notice that the LCD resolution looks horrific for some of that small text - what's it like in practice?
is there any DAW editing available for this?
Excellent
so when is this coming out exactly?
Most of this video went over my head. I wish I knew more about synthesis. Lol
I have many ideas for patches but have no clue how to create them.
please do a full deepmind 12 review now that it's out. :)
I am a guitar player and I am interested in learning how to play synth. My question is which synth (good quality, reasonably priced) would be good for someone in my situation? I love the Jupiter 8 sounds and I'm looking for something that produces those nice analog sounds. Currently, I'm considering the following: (1) Deepmind 12 (2) Roland System 8 or (3) purchasing the three Roland JP-08, JU-06 and JX-03 with an Arturia Keystep.
Out of those 3, which would be my best choice? What are the pros and cons of each?
Wow, this video is really putting me off of this machine, but to be fair, I don't need to dive as deep as you're going. It does not look simple, or obvious, or intuitive, but it does look customizable.
Hello there, is there a possibility to access sounds quickly; the menu suggests 4 knobs, left right, up down, does not seem to be practical for playing songs live ...???
This sounds so interesting. I guess how deep can one go with modulations on this synth....
How do we save new sounds we create to the Deepmind 12?
I really like the capture you affect in your videos. So many so called reviews leave such a disgust to the palette in considering an instrument that it's a complete turnoff.
Fantastic how you explore the capabilities and enrichment of the circuitry
It would be helpful to see what you did to get the initial mod. Cannot see what your hands are doing when the video is switched to the parameter screen.
How do you make microtonal intervals?
So the keyboard slider is keyboard tracking? And all the way up is 100%? Can you go beyond 100% keyboard tracking?
please do a full in depth review deepmind 12 now that it is released.
cool Ken Bone outfit
when i try to play the filter on my dm12 d each voice plays a different filter frequency. I don't know how to get it to work right... any ideas would be helpful!
Did you figure it out?
Maybe calibrating it might help.
Fun!
If you own a Deepmind 12 I re-created the original JUNO-106 Factory presets that you can load into it!
Here's a link to hear the presets and the download link is in the bio: czcams.com/video/kLCo1tTiVjc/video.html
sorry if this is a daft question but I havnt been able to find out the release date do you know when it's out in the UK please
Sonic Boom Digital They said at Behringer and Midas that it would be the end of this year.
jamie munro Thanks for responding
Nice bonus review. Can anyone say whether the keyboard is nice to play? Might wait for rack otherwise..
Nick said it wasn't bad.
But this is not the final version, so he didn't know if it was the final units keyboard.
But people have different preferences when it comes to keys.
And this keyboard is kind of limited in range.
Get yourself a good keyboard, at a good size for you. Hopefully you can find one that has some usefull real-time controls (faders and encoders that are not endless should almost be overlooked, as they can be hopless to use when playing, if they are in the wrong place when you call up a patch, but if the keyboard comes with other interesting controls, it can have those as well).
Make sure it has Midi ports, and not only USB. (both is best, and USB host as well would be even better, but the most important thing is standard Midi-ports)
Then you will have great keys to play no matter what synths you get.
It's mostly a good investment, if you find keys you really like, they will probably feel more right to you than most of what hardware synths come with.
Worm sound
I must say it really sounds good, but that the mod matrix is only accessable via display/edit buttons is a dealbreaker for me. I prefer my Prophet 6 UI.
Welp, tried to emulate this on my mininova. Failed spectacularly :p
However it did make a very different noise that is kinda neat in its own right.
Hmm.. You should be able to make something very similiar. Apart from the pan spread of course.
Yeah, the issues I had were that I could not get the self oscillation to sound anywhere near as good as the deepmind. Since it was very obvious that it was a digital audio source, so anything I tried to build on top of that had a very very different sound to the one in this video. In general much more crunchy and digital, which is to be expected from the mininova I guess.
in 1:05 where I'm left only with the filter, I play notes and they seem to be out of tune. like randomly out of tune. anybody knows the reason why?
Calibration, the filters are analogue so will require occasional calibration. There is an item in the system menu as far as I recall.
About to save for this bad boy just cant decide if i want the desktop or keys version ha
