  • Can you play a single stroke roll for 30-minutes straight free of any tension? Or place an accent anywhere you want while playing a roll with total control and confidence? No shame if you answered no. John Hvasta created this video to give Jazz drummers a view into how to achieve whatever you want with your single stroke rolls to give you one more layer of total freedom of expression and movement on any surface and between surfaces. Jazz drumming isn't just about feel. It's about control, speed, velocity, dynamics, movement, and total freedom of expression. If you want to seriously up-level your Jazz drumming this video will give you several approaches to help you do so.

Keep at it. Make sure you're relaxed always. And experiment every way you can with all aspects of shoulder, arm, hand, and finger positioning, movements, tension (not tensing up, just light tension) and release. Great to learn techniques that work for great drummers, but also important ultimately to experiment and figure out what works to get you the playing you want. We'll be getting some "how to practice" tips up soon that may help too. Could also be worth booking some lessons with John. I used to think my hands were just slow too, but lessons with John got me way faster and better in every other way.
