- Are you looking for a way to get your foot in the door for your next GIS job opportunity? Are you looking for a way to stand out from the crowd? Or maybe you're just looking for a way to share your hard work with the world. Whatever your reason, a professional GIS Portfolio is a great way to show what you can do and share who you are in a unique way. This presentation will go into what a GIS portfolio is, why you should create one, and how to start building a great collection.
Presenter: Kate Berg is GIS lead at the State of Michigan’s Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE), where she wears many hats including GIS administrator, open maps and data wrangler, project consultant, and geospatial educator. When she's not wearing those hats, she's wearing a 7mm hood so she can scuba dive a local Michigan shipwreck. You can find her on Twitter (@pokateo_) creating and sharing original map-related memes as a way to unite and uplift the geospatial community. Her innovative professional GIS portfolio has been featured on Esri Canada's "GIS Wow" show, Esri's Education Blog, and GIS Lounge.

Have yet to have one employer who has come to the interview having looked over my digital portfolio. It can be a great addition to an interview, but only if the hiring manager does their homework.

Fantastic!
Great presentation with a lot of useful information. Thank you, Kate!
Thanks for the tips
Is it old-fashioned to join a portfolio in PDF with a cv for a job application? I've just finished my first GIS course and so don't have much to show yet about 3-4 maps max. I dread a bit the time it takes to build a portfolio on line.
That's plenty to start with - for data or software portfolios, 3-5 is the typical number of projects. And any portfolio is a bigger boost over none, versus from okay to great. Go for it, and good luck!
