The best ways to make money are to fulfill requests, and craft things to sell on high price days. Plus making friends with certain characters will reduce the cost of buying things. Like becoming friends with the mayor, Gale, will reduce the cost of buying land upgrades.

Yeah, it takes time to get those points up. If you work hard at it, you can get it done by the end of summer of your first year, but you're more likely to do it in fall. And they reset every year too, but it becomes so much easier to surpass him in future years.
