  • In the past two weeks, six paramedics have been assaulted whilst caring for the ill and injured.
Sydney based paramedic Nathan Williams spoke about one of the more recent attacks that has had an impact on both his working and home life.
Commissioner Willis is very concerned about the recent rise of alcohol fuelled violence towards his staff. Mr Willis admits that some of the violence is sparked by mental health issues, but is more concerned with the sudden increase of intentional attacks on paramedics directly attributed to drug and alcohol abuse.
NSW Police are trained and have the resources in place to handle such violence, however paramedics only weapon of choice is conflict resolution by lending an open ear and heart.
With no other way to protect themselves, paramedics are increasingly becoming the "punching bag" for those who choose to overdo it.
The recent spate of violence is not just limited to the mean streets of the Sydney CBD, it's a state-wide issue.
For twelve years, Paramedic Williams, along with all his supporting crew have been subjected to unspeakable horrors that many could not begin to deal with. The last thing they need is to be threatened and attacked on the job.
During this festive season NSW Ambulance & NSW Police are pleading with all to think carefully about how much alcohol is consumed.
The Australian culture is based on the "have another beer" attitude. But if you can't make a sound decision that helps you protect your family and friends, you've simply had too much.
It's hoped that some take it a little easier than usual, but for goodness sake, take out any frustration in the gym and not after calling triple zero for help.
