    Probably the simplest AR15/M16 animation out there, each section depicted in an easily-absorbed sequence. Even a total novice could come away with a working knowledge of the weapon operation. Great vid!

      Bill Melater as a former infantry soldier myself I can say that they don't. You learn how to shoot and clean your rifle very well, but as far as the mechanical workings are concerned, they're (the military) not required to even talk about it.

      Seems like the two would go hand in hand, but I guess knowing what makes it tick doesn't prevent you from learning to use it. This is not meant to reflect those in/used to be in the service, but some people I run into at the range know two things (most of the time) 1. where the bullets go. 2. Where the bang switch is. Anything after that is sometimes a complete toss-up.

      When I served my 2.5 years compulsory military service in my country back in the early 1970s, we were taught the principle of how the M-16 rifle works. Back then, There were only 20-round magazines like those you see in those 70s Vietnam War movies.

    Now that I understand how the trigger actually stops the hammer action twice, I can understand why a binary trigger fires on both the pull and release action. Thank you for the crystal clear visual understanding of the complete firing action. This will be invaluable for troubleshooting problems.

      @@bovineexcrement8635 From what I can tell not allowing either of the "catches" to do their job would cause out of battery hammer falls... which could be bad. Maybe I'm missing something that also blocks the hammer from falling while the bolt is going forward as well.

      @@TheFlyingZulu The segment of coat hanger is for converting the "disconnector" to an automatic sear: if bent properly, the hammer release is delayed long enough for the bolt to lock

      Not even close lol, it's great and more complex than many other adopted firearms, but it has nothing on AN-94, TKB-022PM and many other prototype and adopted in small numbers firearms, they were simply too good for their time.

      yeah I thought Armalite designed this and it was sold to stoner as the M16. Colt redesigned it as the AR15 as we know it today. but the foundation and principals explained here are the same. the difference is the trigger mechanism

    Awesome animations. I can remember the countless times in basic training where we had to clean our M16s. I had pretty much all that figured out from cycling it over and over again and seeing the parts moving. The animations confirmed what I had come up with.

    What amazes me, is the bolt can go in, lock against the pressure of firing, then unlock and go rearward again, and do that at a fast rate of fire. I know this got invented long before, but it seems to have reached a pinnacle with the AR-15. Its a very pretty piece of engineering.

      @@moritzrossbroich It locks into the front to hold it in place during primer ignition. Those teeth fit through slots, then it rotates, so that they would catch on the slots when pressure tries to push it back out.
