    For all of you asking which pool? Every pool has wingdams and walleyes. Go find them. Asking for the specific pool is an inappropriate question.

    The current up there looks slower to me. Have you ever noticed on the helix how fast you drift downstream? I did back when the Mississippi was low, and I was going 1.2mph. On the other hand, even when its low, the Rock pushes me around at 4.2mph.

    Lance, are there certain characteristics that you look for in a wing dam other than the right amount of flow to narrow down which ones you might try first? Or is it just experience and jumping around until you find active fish? Love the videos

    • @AnglerX
      @AnglerX  Před 4 měsíci

      I think every wing dam is worth a few casts so I like to hit everyone of them in a stretch of river. I won't spend much time at any one wing dam if I'm not getting bit within a few casts.

    I liked the video you made about positioning on wing dams. I still get confused as to water flow and boat position. Is it preferable to park boat upstream of wingdam and then cast down stream just before the wingdam and pull back to the boat? Or park downstream of wingdam and cast upstream to edge of wingdam and pull back to the boat. OR park parrallel to the wigdam and cast on either upstream or downstream side of the wingdam and pull back to the boat?
    Where are the fish sitting in relation to the wingdam? Do they sit on the upstream side of the wingdam and wait for food to come? or do they sit downstream side of the wingdam in the pocket of slow water, waiting for food to come over the wingdam?
    I think I struggle with this because I havent done much walleye river fishing and dont understand them as well as other species. Methods. For instance when I used to trout fish quite a bit on small rivers and streams, they would sit below in the turbulent water waiting for food to come to them and pick through whatever is fluffed up in the turbulence from the water. Or when I was a kid fishing below a dam, the slack water area below the dam is where fish would rest and the turbulence would be a feeding area to also catch fish.
    But since the wingdams direct water, its not like a ton of food is being pulled over the wingdam like a regular dam or rapids, falls etc. So if you could explain where the fish are and what they are doing again that would be helpful. I live closer to pool 2 so that would be my area of interest and I'd like to get out and try, wingdams are such a unique piece of structure there are literally nothing else like it really and other rivers that arent so full of sediment and needed for commerce dont have them, its pretty unique. I get the concept for water flow, just struggle with the prime fish location and what they are doing there.

      Very good points and questions.
      How that river works is very interesting.
      I've fished the Missouri River in the Dakotas and Montana over my entire lifetime but the Missouri is a completely different game; the Missouri Walleye fishing areas are all reservoirs.
      I hope he sees your post and has time to answer all of those questions.

    • @AnglerX
      @AnglerX  Před 4 měsíci +2

      There is a lot that can be talked about when describing how fish use and relate to wing dams. Generally, when I'm looking for walleye and hopping from dam to dam, I position the boat on the upstream side of the dam and cast downstream. By bringing the jig into the current back to the boat. This allows me to really slow down and control the fall rate of the jig. Fall rate is especially important when the water is cold and jig needs to hover in the strike zone.
      Walleyes can be found on the downstream side of wing dams and tend to be more neutral. I find if they are using the upstream side, they are there to do one thing and that is feed! The amount of flow in the river can play a major role in which dams are holding walleye and which side of the dam they will be on. Higher flows will tend push walleyes to the downstream side of the dam where they can get some relief from the current.
      This whole topic could be a book! I'll have to talk about this more in future videos. Thank you for the question!

  • @codybertram6122

    I see many guys around the rivers jigging past 12 o clock. I’ve found I definitely don’t go past about 10 o’clock especially if using mono. I see guys at the river all the time and they got the rod behind them. They literally drag the jig as far as they can with the tip then reset. Ive gotten bad hooksets doing it this way and it’s just awkward trying to get the slack line in and hook set at the same time. At 10 o’clock you have way more power and speed.

    • @AnglerX
      @AnglerX  Před 4 měsíci

      A good hookset is important and if you're not in the proper position to do so it can cost you fish. It happens when you least expect it.
