    Trivia: Lenny & Slash went to high school together -
    "Slash and I went to high school together, but we hadn't seen each other since,” Kravitz told MusicRadar in 2019. "When my first album was out, I went to the American Music Awards and Guns N' Roses were getting awards, and they were sitting in front of me. He and I just kept looking at each other like, 'I know you.' Not 'I know that you're Lenny Kravitz and you're Slash' - but, like, 'I know you.'"

Two powerful egos, maybe. Personally, I think this album was his very best of his many great records in the 90s. Every song bangs.

    Lenny plays the rhythm guitar, bass and drums on this song. He recorded it "old school" using analog equipment, the same recording equipment used by the Beatles. Henry Hirsch was his engineer at that point in time. Always on the run is one of lenny's best. I build this garden for us is another good track you should check out.

    So a riff, is a short repeated phrase it can be any instrument. Riff rock, refers to rock ‘n’ roll songs that use the riff as the background for the lyrics and sometimes even the chorus.
    A riff is Single note lines as opposed to chords. The line that you’re hearing the bass do is like a counterpoint to the main riff so they complement each other and it adds interest and movement to the song.
    Different enough to make the song more interesting and catch your ear but similar enough to go seamlessly together.

  • @mokospoko
    @mokospoko Pƙed rokem +1

    That makes sense Brad. Lenny was playing a very distinctive funk style chordal rhythm guitar that is very predominant in that it takes the forfront over the riff. . Slash is play a single line Riff. Most "riffs", regardless of instrument it comes from is a single line of notes that repeat. The Bassist is playing a simple bass groove that complements Slash's Riff. Bass grooves are mostly some sort of repetitive single line riff in itself. In total in makes a complete super groove that is just killer effect to the ear. the Key is to not have one instrument step on the toes or get in the way of each other. Much like the experience you will get, say for example all the different complimentary moving vocal line in Queen's Bohemian Rhapsody. This interaction of multiple moving lines at the same time is referred to as Counterpoint in classical theory.

    Lenny is playing "Rhythm" (funky riff) in your left ear and Slash is playing "Lead Rhythm" (rock riff) in your right ear. They are 2 different riffs that go together. Its called contrapuntal rhythms. Lennys influences here are from the funk/jazz/rock geniuses of the 70s, like Herbie Hancock's "Head Hunters" or Stevie Wonder's "Higher Ground". Listen to those, if you like this.

    Yes, there are different riffs. Kind of. It's called an arrangement. Letting each instrument play distinct lines that complement each other but let each instrument be unique and recognizable. From experience I can tell you that this song is so much fun in a band because you have so many layers that are unique but go so extremely well together that I get goosebumps everytime I can play this with a good band.

    There are two guitar riffs in this song, they are supposed to complement each other. The reason you picked it up so hard is most likely that they are panned to the different speakers.

    How have I never heard this song before? I was into Kravitz for a quick minute in the late 90s & early 2Ks but somehow I completely missed this one. Strange...đŸ€”

    Time for you guys to revisit Molly Hatchet - song = "Gator Country" a Florida song by a Florida band for those that dwell in Florida. Their whole 1st LP is great.

    You guys should try some Michael Kiwanuka like 'Love and Hate' or 'Cold Little Heart'. The live sessions of these songs are amazing. The guitar work in Love and Hate will make your brain melt.
