I bought a Keylab 49 mk1 dirt cheap just to get ahold of the Analog Lab license. I had major keybed issues (why it was so cheap) but Arturia came thru and found me a replacement keybed. My only frustration is Analog Lab and MIDI Control Center don't play well with linux. :( 's def. a nice controller tho.

I helped a friend pick out a MIDI board waaayy back then...we wound up with a Yamaha KX-88. Whatever they did, I have loved it above all contenders ever since. I do intend to check the Keylab 88, but because he gave me his KX as an early inheritance (I think he's jumping the gun) the Arturia has a tough mission to win me.

Arturia does not connect to any DAW without an insane amount of investigation you have to be super sleuth to get signal chain I got a second hand 49 and purchased what Jeremy mentions here (Anolog V ) you can’t beat the 8000 different sounds synths pianos drums you name it it doesn’t connect to anything so I though I’ll just upgrade to the newest ummmmm no but with FL studios newest update 21.2 and a trick I put in comments above it finally connects to something

I have a Roland A-88 MKII and until now I used VIP with AKAI Advance 25 to control the plugins but now I began trying Nektarine with Aura (this is smaller and probably newer or evetuakky hsa more polished workflow compared to VIP). VIP was not really updated so far, while Nektarine just recently received a huge update in features, not just bugfixes.
These two solutions can control any plugins. I am not familiar with Arturia's integration with plugins, or is more leaned toward Analog Lab and everything else is just a regular midi source, without the possibility to switch instruments etc.

I picked up a first gen Keylab49 for dirt-cheap because the keybed had issues, just to land a copy of Analog Lab V. Arturia's support organization was great, helping me transfer the software licensing with minimal pain, and eventually even scaring up a replacement keybed for me after they said they didn't think they had any more. With a replacement keybed finally installed, this is an amazing controller. Quite the opposite of my monster Alesis QS8.1, I love the light synth keybed, and having all those knobs and faders and switches I can map to different functions on the various soft synths I use is very handy. I wish the software behaved better under linux, but I guess I can live with occasionally having to light up a Windows VM to tweak the keyboard config. Just wish I had 61 instead of 49 keys. :D

can the keylab perform dual/layer function on different voices/sounds loaded on the keyboard? my Yamaha YPG-635 has a dual function that combines 2 sounds (Wah Clavi and Rotor Organ) for an amazing new sound, a feature I have yet to find on other keyboards. to be clear, it doesn't layer one sound on top of the other like most keyboards, where you can differentiate the different sounds even when played together...instead, it fuses them together to create an original new sound (it's analogous to baking a cake rather than laying bricks). can the keylab do this?

It sounds like an answer to a prayer. Evidently I would still need to set a up connection w my laptop though, and it's been quite a while since I've "done all that". I was playing in a church using my gear, and fiddled w my PC to it at home, but sold that older equipment since then, ... so unless you are stating that I can use it to some extent w/o my PC, I will need to get updated in that mentality, (or at least for DAWE's which is do-able) but if you are saying that I can begin to use sounds immediately w their (kindly included bundle) then, ... that would be ultra awesome! 😎

A don’t necessarily care about a lot of options, I just want one that is well made, sounds really well, and feels like an acoustic piano when I play. I’ve been playing guitar for 10+ years and I have bought too many guitars and I am sentimental towards them so I have kept every single one. It took me along time and a lot of money to find the perfect guitar. I don’t want to go through that process with pianos. I want to buy one that will satisfy me for a long time. $750-1000 range preferred, but may spend more if needed. Thank you!

Hi Jeremy! I love your reviews! I'm planning to buy a new piano/keyboard. Initially, I thought about a digital piano (e.g.Roland fp 30x or fp 60x) but I saw your review on Arturia and it changed my mind as I would like to produce music as well. I've got a very simple question - as Arturia does not have its own speakers, how are you supposed to use it if you only want to play the piano? Apologies if the question is obvious but I really want to make a decision whether to but a digital piano plus a separate mini Midi Controller or Arturia would be the best choice for me? Thank you in advance for your help ❤

The FP-30x is still really great for the price and it can work as a standalone. The key texture, the hammer action, and sensors are great and the Steinway sampling is excellent. I have one but don't need a vast array of instruments or tuning capability for recording. Let us know an update if you get the Arturia and let us know what you think. Jeremy makes everything sound great so would like another take. I would get sucked into a Korg or similar for a MIDI knowing myself.

    Hi Jeremy,
Just after a bit of advice regarding the Arturia Keylab 88 MK2. I am selling my current upright piano as it is very old now, its one I use to practice on when I was at school (I'm in my 40s now) and haven't really played properly since then but am looking to get back into playing, but want to dive into something digital as it offers more options for creativity. I've been looking at a number of keyboards, digital pianos, synthesizers etc for over the last year or two trying to decide on one and only came across this particular keyboard not long ago. I will be mostly playing with headphones but would also be wanting to invest in some decent speakers so that my kids can play in our lounge room.
What is the general rule when it comes to speakers and how does the sound compare to say something like a synth or digital piano with built in speakers?
Also is the learning curve steep for something like this? I'm coming from a classical background but am very much a moderately skilled player wanting to start learning again but want to have the option of multiple instruments playing with drum beats etc.
Is this more of a professional tool or can novices learn it quite easily.
Any help would be appreciated. Cheers.

Is this a good choice for a total beginner interested in learning piano? Or should I start with something more basic? Many thanks!

    • @stillmind5892
      @stillmind5892 Před 8 měsíci

If you have money to spend - why not. But generally for most instruments I find it's sometimes easier to start with something basic, just to get a feel of how to arrange tones and experiment. If something sounds very good, there is a possibility you will not learn as much, simply because no matter what you do it sounds great, so you can get hyped about the instrument instead your skills. With a good, but less than perfect instrument - you gotta be a bit more precise so it forces you to learn in a sense.
But it really depends, usually. IDK about piano in particular. I know that people learn differently and some need encouragement of it sounding good, while some need a challenge... the most important thing is to never give up, and you will learn no matter what. The question is are you more persistent when quality is amazing, or when you have to in a sense *find* the quality. Some people get lazy, like I mentioned before.
So for example as a gong player(among other things), I've started in fairly difficult circumstances, but this allowed me to be one of the best players - and it becomes very apparent on gongs that are easier to play... most people settle for a "good enough" sound without realizing there is more, and I can create miracles because I'm used to putting more attention and focus into it. If you can focus anyway, then it doesn't really matter, but many people require a certain challenge to learn effectively. If an instrument sounds perfect, there might not be as much incentive to make a good sound on it because it already does.
So it really depends. Maybe check his "beginner pianos" video? I'm personally very impressed by some cheaper options. Also keep in mind this isn't exactly a piano, but a midi controller - that video I mention has many options for all the needs and there is one very interesting Yamaha instrument for total beginners in particular.

This video portrays its capabilities perfectly.
The Arturia Keylab 88 MkII was very interesting to me. Although from the comments I’ve seen so far no one has answered the “circumstance” I’ve been looking for. I understand it’s a midi keyboard and needs to be connected to an interface IE a laptop or desktop. But would this be a good choice for me, I’ve been really interested in home digital pianos and I’ve seen that you’ve reviewed many. Kawaii and Roland have been the most appealing brands for aesthetic and features. But the problem lies in the fact that I want to be able to just sit down and play it like a regular digital. I know I’d have to get speakers to hear the sound and pedals for the things I want to play. And obviously the power source being a laptop. But is that all worth it?? I’m a complete beginner but I have such ambition to create music and just become technically advanced with playing piano naturally. I eventually want to get to an almost professional level. But I’m worried about this purchase maybe not being for me.
My fascination with this product lies in the fact of the digital suite it’s equipped with ans the fact that it’s one of the prettiest keyboards I’ve ever seen. Anyone taking the time to comment on this.. thank you so much it really means a lot to me.

    • @sinisterphant0m820

I forgot to ask, what would the weighted action on this unit be most comparable to. For example would it be closer to entry level home digital pianos from big brands like yamaha, kawaii, Roland, Casio Etc.. or would it be closer to maybe their $1100-$1500 piano models.
The action is very important to me because I want to make sure it can be very expressive on both lows and highs even it doesn’t have any internal speakers.

The display, control layout, and software capabilities of the Mk2 are somewhat different from the Mk1. The one you'll notice right off is that the 4x4 grid of drum pads has moved to the far left and the sliders are further to the right. The display is a bit bigger and IIRC conveys more information. And they've rolled more integration with popular DAWs

Great video again. The 88 key controller niche is pretty much exclusive for those that need the keyboard range and the acoustic piano like keyboard action.
All the features you mentioned is said well. Quality construction and materials, features and all the details. But, for everyone looking for a quality fully weighted keyboard would depend on the quality of each Instrument, and their personal level of expertise, experience, and their interaction and tactile feel along with all the other things we understand without need to go into explaination.
But, someone buying a Controller with 88 weighted keys that is accustomed to playing acoustic pianos and such should not purchase one without physically playing it.
This is not fully applicable to myself, as I don't have that musical background. My top keyboard would be a Roland Fantom-06 or 07 for church, and if I got an 88 key digital piano, it would probably be the R 88 or FP-90/90X.
If I did get a controller, I would get the new Roland A-88 MKII for $230 USD more than this one, with a new fully loaded Apple MacBook Air M2 series that just came out. But, I would find it hard to justify getting that over just the R 88.
But that's just me. With the Fantom 0 series, and the above, two I mentioned, Roland has a very advanced and huge software sound eco system, and I am very inclined towards Roland as my first preference.
But since at this time, I do not yet need a keyboard with 1/4" audio outs and such, I can do a lot with my 3 keyboards, more peripheral equipment, and a good laptop computer.
I also brought out my discontinued Roland CD-2 professional CF/CD recorder I had in storage for years and hardly used, and didn't realize/forgot all the incredible things it can do.
The Roland E-X50 looks great, with pro level connectivity, but it seems hard to get here in the US, or find much videos in English, as I think it is largely popular with the international ethnic music arranger keyboard market and a vast improvement over the E-X30.
I might still get the Casio CT-S1000V later, or might just wait and get a Fantom-06/07.
It's not available in stores, but online, I can get micro USB to USB-C and micro USB to Lightning cables to hook up my Go:Keys and PSS-A50 to my two smartphones or iPad Mini when I get it, or I think the iPad and MacBook may have USB-C and USB-A, too.
So much things and options from small, and low budget on up. My JD-Xi has all professional I/O jacks with the printer type USB cables for computers.
So, what I already have can keep me occupied for a long timed, but the sound is what makes me want the bother keyboards the most.
The main thing is that we enjoy playing, creating and listening to music.
