  • My quest for the perfect tripod may never be complete, but this video series is! What was supposed to be a quick comparison of Manfrotto and Benro has turned into a saga spanning many months, and many tripods. In this video I'll show you the tripod I've finally settled on -The Ikan E-Image GA752T Tripod with GH06 Video Head - and explain my new-found love for the original Manfrotto 055 that I started off with.

    Hey Matt, thanks for sharing your thoughts along this journey of yours. Buying new gear is always a complicated process for those who care about getting the best value for their hard-earned dollars. I appreciate your insights and the time you've spent on providing a concise, sincere, and informative series of videos. The jury is still out on what video tripod/head I'll ultimately buy, but I really appreciate hearing about your experiences and observations. Great job!

    Hi Matt. I've really enjoyed your video min-series. I'm grateful for you following things up and saving me from making a purchase I'd probably have been unhappy with; the Benro head. I have settled for the Manfrotto as being the best compromise for my needs. Wishing you many happy years with your tripod and looking forward to more from you on here.

      You will not be disappointed with the 055/502 combo. I just finished four days of shooting video and stills and we had it there the whole time. I used the E-Image as well, but that Manfrotto is just the right balance of sturdy and easy to use. Check out my recent video on the way I'm now using the head - it takes a while to get used to but once you do, it's great. Thanks for watching!

      It's a shame to me that Benro has not maintained its quality. One of my first travel tripods was a Benro from the 4 series. I use it to this day and really like it. I still feel like the E-Image offerings are the sweet spot in terms of value for money.

      Thanks. That's what I tried - marking the ring (I used tape on the ring and the base and tried to align the two). Unfortunately, it did not work because of the amount of slack in the mechanism. Even if you return the ring to the same position, it doesn't guarantee that the resistance will be the same.

    Thanks for the insight on these tripods. At the moment, I'm currently stuck between the Ikan E-Image GA752T Tripod with GH06 head and the SCG (Smooth Camera Gear) T6AL2 / T8AL2. Very similar price points with durability (AA) and carbon fiber options for SCG. thanks a lot for the saga ! I also need a new tripod head, i have an older version of the 502 and need a fluid head for video work. This is still not ideal for me, but it checks a lot of boxes that i need. The major downside for me is the payload, 6kg is great but my rig tends to be a little higher (with monitors and other accessories) which raises the center of gravity quite a lot, reducing the payload substantially :(
    If this head had a 8kg payload, would be an instant buy for me. Other similar heads that i've found in this price bracket would be the benro BV8 (but Benro has some hit or miss products), the Sirui bch 20 but i havent found any reviews on it and the Teris Tsn6 plus, but i think the finish is not that great when compared to this GH06.
    Overall, all of them (gh06 included) have a drawback, but i think , overall, the gh06 might be the best option on this price range. I also looked at the gh08 but seems to be worse in every way, despite having a better payload (gh08 makes no sense for me though)

    • @MattSpaugh
      @MattSpaugh  Před 2 lety +1

      If there's one thing I learned in all this it's that no one tripod setup is going to work for every situation. The 502AH is still the best all-rounder that I have, but for smoother movement and heavier loads, the GH06 is my go-to. The adjustable counter-balance on the GH06 makes it a much more flexible piece of gear. My rigs usually max out in the 4-5kg range so I'm not dealing with the kind of weight you're talking about.
      Glad you enjoyed the videos, thanks for watching!

    For over $500 between the ikan and manfrotto is a no brainer to me ( both as a photographer and videographer). The manfrotto is way less expensive and more versatile ( can't take that ikan on a landscape hike cuz of its form factor).. you're not alone in the journey to getting a tripod you're satisfied with..btw the manfrotto nitro system offer counter balance.

    • @MattSpaugh
      @MattSpaugh  Před rokem +1

      The GH06 is in a different class than the 502AH. The better comparison on that front would be to put it up against some of Sachtler's more affordable heads. I've used those (at twice the cost of the GH06) and it holds its own fo sho. If smooth pans and tilts are your top priority, it's the one to go with.
      That said, the 055/502 combo is more versatile, lighter, and much cheaper.

    Great video, really appreciated the detailed comparison/breakdown. On the Ikan tripod, is the top lock that adjusts the angle of the legs adjustable, like the Manfrotto? In the case I want to get a low-angle/adjust my tripod height when all legs are collapsed

    • @MattSpaugh
      @MattSpaugh  Před 3 lety

      The Ikan legs do not have any positive locks on them. You either use the center-spreader to adjust the height or remove it and rely on the spikes or feet to hold everything in place.
      I like the system as it provides more adjustment, but it takes some getting used to.
      FWIW, I'm still loving the E-Image tripod. That GH06 head is just fantastic!

    Great video, good timing too - I've been looking around for a solid video tripod for a bit now and these two are up there in the list. I do have a question though, how does the ball head on the e-image handle sliders? Wondering if it'll slip and I'd best be going with a flat base head.
    edit: I just finished your second video in the series, looks like the head isn't removable. That being said, any insight on general bowl heads working with sliders?

    • @MattSpaugh
      @MattSpaugh  Před 4 lety +2

      The Manfrotto 502AH is a flat-based head. It works on my GVM 31" slider, but to be honest that head is heavy and that slider is not what I'd call heavy duty. Using a head that heavy, it needs some support on either side to keep from bowing downward. I usually use a small bargain ballhead on my slider. I made a video about it a few months back: czcams.com/video/lC7ky0zr3og/video.html
      I can't say enough good things about the E-Image combo. It's big and heavy but like I said in the video, it's a blessing and a curse. Let me know what you end up with - particularly if you find something I haven't looked at. Thanks for watching.

      Still very much liking the E-Image, and using the Manfrotto on almost every job.
      The 502AH is a flat bottom head. The legs I have with my E-Image kit use a bowl. You'd need to add a 75mm bowl to that head to make it work, but it would be a good option in my opinion.

    Thanks for making such a detailed comparison of the heads and a detailed journal of your experience. I am going through the same thought process and I think I am settling on thr gh06, except could you share the dimensions of the gho6? If you were to remove the pan handle bar, what is the length/dimensions of the(1) widest point and (2) the deepest /thickest point of the fluid head? I plan to stuff this in my gear bag but it has limited space and fluid heads tend to be huge but the gh06 seems to tick off most of my requirements.

    • @MattSpaugh
      @MattSpaugh  Před 2 lety

      FWIW, I'm still a big fan of the GH06. I really think there's nothing out there that touches it for less than a grand (maybe more).
      Not including the bowl, the head is about 5.5" tall, 4" wide and about 4.25" deep. It's surprisingly compact. It's definitely smaller than the Manfrotto 502AH that I use.
      Honestly, being so used to the 502, the GH06 almost feels too small at times but that's not to say it won't do the job - it's never let me down.

      Glad the video was helpful.
      I'm still very pleased with the tripod and head although I will say that I've noticed just the SLIGHTEST bit of backlash when panning. You pan slowly left, let go, and it moves back to the right just a hair. I normally hold my pans and tilts for a second after stopping so this is not an issue but, since you asked, I'd say that's the only thing I've noticed.
      The spreader is easily removed, just a small release pin that pulls out. There is no retaining strap of any kind so once they're out they can get away from you if you're not careful. It's never been a problem but again, worth a mention.

    Hi. Thanks for the vid. I watched all three and about to make a purchase. Is it easy to detach fluid head from Manfrotto tripod? I saw a guy on CZcams using a screw driver to take that off. too much hustle. The reason I'm asking is that I have a slider with another fluid head and wonder how quickly I can get my slider on top of Manfrotto tripod. Is iKan better in this regards? Thanks 😊

      The 502 head has a flat base and screws off pretty easily - no tools needed. I've used it on my GVM slider with no problems at all. Works great!

      U can buy the new E-Image GH06F, u can screw the bottom part of the bowl off to get a flat base. So u can use it also on a slider. That to me makes it the best fluid head!

    hey, these vids are some of the more helpful & unique re the 502/055, thank you kindly!
    i just got my first video tripod, to coincide w my first (real) video camera, and grabbed the 502AH/055PRO3 combo that's like $360, and comes w a free Move Quick Release system (that will be of little use to me, it seems like, til (if) I get more Manfrotto gear. Sneaky of them to throw that in, bc it makes that combo seem like a deal (to the untrained eye, I didn't leave myself enough time to research tripods before BF) when if I'm not mistaken it's been that price for years, and then incentivizes you to buy more Manfrotto.
    After seeing your relatively recent leveling vid, I'm wondering if you stuck w the GH06, and any comments you might have about the two heads. I have plenty of time to return the Manfrotto (the MOVE was back ordered anyway) and pick up a GH06, and since I'm planning to work video assets into my business I'm investing in equipment I hope not to have to soon replace.
    So the cost differential bw a GH06 combo and the 502AH I have isn't anything I need to worry about. Once you take into account the addition of a leveler, the difference is nominal.
    So I'm just kind of wondering which you'd go with, if you could only have one?
    The lack of a ball head is the main issue, I think, but the 055 legs are heavy and the Ikan style seems preferable.
    Any help would be greatly appreciated, I've subbed and am looking fwd to more vids, regardless. i saw the end of your tip vid about switching the handle side (thanks), and know you said you "kept coming back" to the 502, but do you use it more than the GH06? bc staying level is gonna be crucial.
    thanks so much for anything you can say
    cheers!

      I use the 055/502 for a lot of my work just because it is convenient to travel with. However, the GH06 is still my preferred tripod for any kind of video work that requires camera movement. The 502 is fantastic, but the GH06 is a better fluid head and works better with heavier rigs.
      If I could only have one, I'd say the 055/502 combo is a more versatile setup - especially when you include the 438 leveler.
      Many of my professional shoots require two cameras, and I always use the GH06 for my A-Camera and the 055/502 for my B-Camera (usually with a small slider on it).
      I hope that helps, thanks for watching.

      @@purinsat sure, I picked it up at Adorama but I just checked and that was on sale, it's back up to like 525... i think the head is supposed to be a particularly great value, you can still find it for like 175, and then some legs separately maybe... yeh, just checked, the MT055XPRO3 is 250 on amazon, so together would be 425, which isn't 360 but it's closer to it than to 525

    Can I get the GH06 Video Head and put it on a lighter tripod than this GA752T? I'm primarily an in-the-field bird photographer (with some botanicals mixed in) and that 21 lbs. total weight was scary for little ol' 5' 6" me and 73 years old.

    • @MattSpaugh
      @MattSpaugh  Před 2 lety

      As I commented on your previous comment, I think for your work a fluid head is not necessary. If you really like the E-Image stuff (which is awesome), a better solution for you might be the GH03 head - it's smaller and the fluid drag is fixed instead of variable. You're using a relatively light load, so that level of adjustability is likely not needed. The E-Image 760AT legs would give you all the benefits of the Manfrotto 055, but a bowl mount instead of the center column. SO, you could go really low to the ground, have an excellent way to level your camera on rough terrain - and it's only $299. Heck, typing this up, I've convinced myself to buy one!

    • @MattSpaugh
      @MattSpaugh  Před 3 lety +1

      The 3-Legged stuff starts to push beyond my budget - part of what makes the E-Image GH06 so attractive to me. It's not the best, but in terms of value, I don't there there is anything that can touch it.
      The Airhead Cine is an awesome looking head, and something I'd like to try, but not having any first-hand experience with it, I can't offer a reliable opinion. If you ever use the Airhead Cine, I'd love to know your thoughts on it.
