---- About the Pattern ----
The Mosu Bag is a crocheted Japanese knot bag that is handy, practical, and can be used year-round! It is made completely in one piece and comes with a full video tutorial. The size can easily be adjusted and customized. The name of this bag, Mosu, is inspired by the moss stitch used in this design, as it is the Japanese word for “moss”. The moss stitch, also known as the linen stitch, is very easy to crochet and produces a beautiful texture as the final result.
This project works up beautifully with solid colors, variegated yarn, or self-striping yarn. It is recommended to use a yarn that does not stretch, such as 100% cotton yarn. If desired, you may add a cloth lining in the bag or to the underside of the straps to add durability.
The Mosu Bag is perfect for kids, adults, teachers, friends, parents, and more! This accessory works well as a wristlet, market bag, clutch, purse, tote, and handbag. Sell them at craft fairs or make them as gifts for birthdays or holidays. The PDF pattern includes photo references and full written instructions.

Exciting news! A CROCHET KIT for this pattern is available: yarnsea.com/en/project/2145/mosu-bag-easy-japanese-knot-bag-diy-tutorial-free-pattern-for-beginners
I am a beginner, but wanted to.make something with this beautiful yarn I have. Yours is best video for me. You are so calming. Not to mention your pattern has the easiest stitch marker placement. (I can't grasp the concept for some reason.. 61 yr old brain here). You are the 3rd crochet channel I have subscribed to a d I am so glad I found you.
I'm so happy to hear that, thank you for the amazing feedback and kind words! I hope you'll enjoy more of my patterns! :)
Don't blame the age, blame the pattern 😢
I have never crotched but want to learn, your clear instruction verbal and visual is excellent thank you

Thank you for this tutorial!!! It was easy to follow and I really appreciate that you talked through the pattern along with displaying the pattern on the screen. I’m a fairly beginner crocheter so I was a little intimidated by bags but I was able to make this one!

It must be sooo lovely in Sakura pink!!! So glad you enjoyed the pattern!
How much yarn should I expect to use if I'm using a worsted weight?
I’m not sure Dawna. The purse used up 1 1/2 skeins of the cream and sugar cotton yarn at Walmart.
I hope to make this bag! Love how you made the base and the moss stitch is my favorite stitch!
yay, hope you have fun making it!! I love the moss stitch too!
Thank you for teaching me how to make this beautiful Japanese bag!

Thanks so much!! You are so kind; thank you for supporting me by purchasing the pattern too. I really appreciate it!!
Thank you sharing the written pattern AND for creating this video.
I tried out the first two rows (before I found this video) & got lost in the increases. 😬 Following you start the project here on YT really helps a lot!
I'm so glad the video helped! That's what I made it for! :)
You're awesome 😊I made this bag along with the tutorial in royal blue🧶 exactly as yours ❤❤.. thank you 🦋🌺🥰🌺💞🌈🌻
Wow, it must look amazing in royal blue!! Happy you enjoyed the tutorial, thank you!
Loved the tutorial and your voice the most💖
Aww you're so sweet, thank you!!
I love this bag. I have made 2 already. Thank you😊
So awesome to hear!!
Honestly, I don't understand how or why people are rushing to mention that they found the tutorial super easy...the written instructions are kind of nonsense? It isn't a bad pattern and she seems like a great crocheter, but stuff like "in the last 4 stitches sc 3 and inc"? after SCing the whole time...that's just inc in the last stitch of the row. It definitely threw me off and led to a few mishaps, BUT I still managed to make the bag as a gift to my grandmother, so I am thankful nontheless :-)
That part is to explain to the crocheter how the increasing works, since we're increasing in an oval shape. This allows the person to see the repetition that was used in the start of the round to make teh first half of the oval, and then the end of the round. Sorry you didn't like the instructions. I wanted to word it in a way that is didactic and allows the crocheter to learn how the shape is formed, so they can identify the pattern easier and add more rounds by following the repetition if needed. This helps them adjust to their needs.
The Transcript is very useful👌
Glad to hear it!! :)
Thank you for doing such a clear tutorial! I love the outcome of the bag. I’ll be buying your pattern to support you 😊
That's so sweet of you! Thank you for such positive feedback and I am so grateful that you got the pattern to support me. That means a lot to me!!

Thank you, excellent tutorial. So easy to understand!
So glad you like it!!
Thank you for the pattern! I now have a cute knot bag! 😃 I used 2 strands of #2 cotton like you did in 2 colours & made it a bit smaller than yours. Love it! Thanks again 💕

I love it. I am going to make this. Thank You. 🥰
I'm so glad you like it, thanks! Happy crocheting!
Very nice!
Thanks so much!!
I actually completed this after a do-over, and it's not as big as yours but I'm proud of it!
Yay, good job! Sometimes projects turn out smaller due to yarn weight, hook size, or tension. You can make a bigger one with thicker yarn and a larger hook!
Hello from NZ lovely bag will make thanks for sharing
THanks for liking my design! Hope you'll have fun making it!
Interestingly 😊cute thank you 😊
So glad you like it, thank you dear!

So glad you like it! Thank you for the amazing feedback too!!
I have a cloth version of this bag I got from a makeup brand, and I was wondering if there was a crochet version. Thank you for posting this! I'll try it soon!
Yay, glad you were able to find this tutorial! Hope you'll have fun making the Mosu bag!
Gracias, muy bonita
Muchisimas gracias!
Thank you so much for the pattern and tutorial. I have been wanting to make a knot bag and moss stitch is my favorite stitch.
I'm so happy to hear it!! I love the moss stitch too and I thought it'd be perfect for a knot bag since it can be worked obth in the round and rows. I wanted to make a more seamless bag without a harsh trasnition between the bag and handles!

Thank you so much!!
hi!! thank you for the tutorial! i made one with scrap yarn and it turned out so cute! i wanted to make another one for my sister but was unsure how much yarn to buy. Would anybody happen to know a rough gauge on how much yarn was used in this project? thanks in advance!!
❤gracias ❤🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉😊
De nada!!
This was the first thing I made to begin my crochet journey! It came out a little differently than yours but I still love it. I was wondering if I wanted to make a bigger one, do I just do a bigger chain at the beginning?
Wow, I'm so humbled you chose my project as your very first make!! That's amazing! Thank you! Congrats on finishing it and I'm glad it'll be LOVED because there's something so incredibly special about first projects.
I really liked the look of the base of this pattern. Tried to follow the video tutorial but was confused with the increase in Rows 3-5, went to the website and tried to follow the written pattern but got it wrong as well. So, I had to print the pattern, and watch the video simultaneously to finally get it.
Sorry to hear the video and written pattern didn't help, but that the PDF pattern did. I'm guessing it was because of the photo references in the PDF pattern! I'm glad you were able to make it now
Thank you! I want someone who teaches me how to crochet not just show me in a video! And you do just that. Anyone can show someone else how to crochet in a video but if you don't know the rules, when, why, and how you can't learn to crochet properly. I want to understand crochet and not just duplicate someone else. Thank you for sharing your knowledge...😘😀
WOW!! Omg, thanks for the donation; that's my very first CZcams donation ever! AHHH I'm so humbled. Thank you, thank you, and I'm very happy to hear that you enjoy my tutorial!! Your feedback is super helpful for me as I create more videos!
@@SweetSofties your very welcome. That's exciting to know i was the first. I just completed the Japanese knot bag Wed. I wish I could show you a picture I used rainbow colored yarn, it goes through all the colors one by one. It turned out beautifully! Thanks for sharing your knowledge. God bless.

Hi just wanted to know how long this bag takes to make? Love the style!
Thanks! If I had to guess (since I didn't actually time myself), I think this bag took me about 5-6 hours to make!
Hi, lovely design and detailed tutorial. Just want to know, is it nessecery to take two strands,if we have thick yarn. please reply. Appreciate your help. Thank you. 🥰🤗
Hi, thanks for asking! If you're using thick yarn, you can just work with a single strand. I had to combine my yarn strands because they were quite thin/light-weight, meaning I would have to make a lot more stitches to get a decently-sized bag. With thick/bulky weight yarn, you can go ahead and just use a single strand!
Thanks for sharing this tutorial! Could you advise how I could adjust so that the base of the bag comes in a depth?
Hi! you could start out with a regular circle instead of an oval shape. Work in a magic ring and steadily increase around. Then when you get to the body portion of the bag, follow the moss stitch pattern as indicated. Hope this helps!
@@SweetSofties Thanks a lot!
@@iamkari1 You're very welcome!!
Thank you so much for sharing this. Is there a link to a written pattern including the abbreviations? I am not a native English speaker so it might be useful to have it written in order to look up the abbreviations. Thank you so much
Sure thing! Here's the written pattern: www.sweetsofties.com/2022/06/mosu-bag.html
Would this also work with a lemon Peel stitch for the body of the bag instead of a moss sticht?
I haven't tried it out but you can experiment! :)
Hi! Thank you for the pattern! A question though, I'm not able to end the first round of the moss stitch (Round Seven) on a chain space.
All my stitches prior to this round seem to add up correctly. Am I missing something?
Hi! I'm sorry to hear that...I would assume that is because you have the wrong number of stitches and are perhaps one short or one too many. However, if your stitches prior to that round are adding up correctly...I don't know waht the cause might be. :( I'm sorry if this is not helpful!
Hi, in row 7, when u end with the chain stitch, u actually skip one stitch b4 u begin with row 8, 1st sc on the sc stitch. Watch around 16:08 of the video, u will notice there is a skip stitch b4 the row 8 1st sc
Hola podrías colocar la opcion de subtitulo en español. Se agradecía. Gracias
Hi, I would like to do that! Unfortunately I do not have the option to use automatic Spanish subtitles...I would need to add the subtitles myself and I do not know Spanish well enough to do that. I'm so sorry!
Hi, and thank you! In the video it looks like you have used two strands of yarn, is that true?
For the strap part you have chain 2 and turn at beginning but in video you say chain 1 and turn. What should I do?
Is it okay to use polyester or polycotton yarn for this project?
Yes, but I'd recommend using a cloth lining to keep your bag from stretching out of shape! Hope this helps!
Hi! Love the pattern, but I’m also trying to clarify the instructions. When it comes to increasing in R3, it says "in the last 2 sts: sc, inc". In R4, it says "in the last 3 sts, sc 2, inc". In R5, it says "in the last 4 sts, sc 3, inc". Does this just mean to simply increase in the last st of the row? I'm trying to figure out why you're saying to sc as normal across the row, then in the last 2, 3 or 4 sts, you should actually just continue as normal and just increase in the final st. I feel like I'm missing something. Am I misunderstanding? Thank you!
Hi, I wrote it that way because it follows the pattern of increases in the instructions in the round :) For example:
"R3: (Sc, inc) x 2, sc 28, (sc, inc) x 3, sc 28. In the last 2 sts: sc, inc."
"R4: (Sc 2, inc) x 2, sc 28, (sc 2, inc) x 3, sc 28. In the last 3 sts: sc 2, inc."
R3's increases look like: (sc, inc).
In R4, the increases look like: (sc 2, inc).
I hope that makes sense. It's to show the crocheter how the increases are formed.
@@SweetSofties thank you! Sorry for the trouble. It makes sense now.
Hi, want to clarify something as your way of writing pattern is different from the ones I used before.
In base R2: Inc 2, sc 28, inc 3, sc 28. In the last st: inc. After the inc 3 you make 28 sc and in 29 you make inc OR you make 27 and make inc in 28?
You will sc 28, and then after that, increase in the 29th st. Hope this helps! :)
I am working on it. Does it go narrowing when the height goes up?
Hi! There is no narrowing/decreasing with the height. Hope this helps!
So jow did you work with the corners? I thought mine getting narrower ini these areas.
As you crochet the height of the bag, you'll be crocheting in straight rounds (keeping the same stitch count) and repeating the rounds. The sides hsould look like they're going straight up like a square, and not curved in like a triangle. The bag only looks triangular-shaped because I put the straps together in the end. If you check out my blog post (see description box for link) you'll see a photo of how the bag looks laid out flat. Hope that helps!
How long does it usually take you to crochet this beautiful purse/tote?
It takes about 2 days for me to make! I crochet in a couple sittings, so maybe about 4 hours total?
I love making this bag. Nice tutorial easy to follow. Thank you for sharing
So glad you like it! Thank you!!
If you are using medium weight yarn, how many yards (or meters) would you need for this project?
I apologize but I don't know the yardage! It can be easily adjusted to be longer/shorter/bigger/smaller though!
I would like to make this in a worsted weight wool to later felt it. How much yarn was used for this tutorial?
Hi! I wish I could provide a yardage but I'm not entirely sure! My very rough estimation would be that ~400 yards was used?
I was really excited to start on this project and even finally found a weight 4 yarn in a colour that i like but it's acrylic and not cotton:( does it matter that much? i'm really bummed out about this u.u
if your worried about it stretching out i would add a lining if you can but i just used a 4.5 mm hook and it made the stitches tight for me so i’m not too worried about it. you can definitely use acrylic for bags just don’t put crazy heavy things in them, phone and wallet (without a lot of change) should be fine
@@peepeepooie if i were to put lining would it be okay for me to put heavier stuff into the bag?
Hi Maria, like what A M said, you can use acrylic for bags! The concern is that if you don't add a bag lining, the acrylic yarn is usually pretty stretchy so the bag may stretch out of shape with heavier objects inside. If you add a cloth lining, you should be able to put heavier things into the bag! I recommend cloth lining even for bags made with 100% cotton yarn because it's good to have a protective lining inside anyway...to keep small things from slipping through stitches. It'll help your bag live longer!
@@SweetSofties thank you!
Hi, there's only hobbii twister yarn which contains 55%cotton, is it still suitable for this pattern?
You can use it, but I would recommend adding a cloth liner in the bag to keep it from stretching!
how many grams of yarn did you use??
Hi! I'm estimating here...but probably around 300 yards of yarn for the whole project? I'm not sure what hte "gram" equivalent is. If it helps, I held yarn doubled (2 skeins) with Hobbii Summer Twister and used less than 1/2 of each skein.
Can I use acrylic yarn? Would it make a difference?
You can use acrylic yarn but it'll be stretchier, so you'll need to sew a cloth liner inside to make sure it doesn't stretch out of shape. Hope this helps!
@@SweetSofties yea it did, thanks!
How much cotton yarn did you use?
is it possible if I use milk cotton chungky yarn
Yes you can do that! :)
I see two strands being held together as one, the directions here say to use worsted weight but in the blog the directions say you used a fine weight. I’m confused.
Sorry for the confusion! The yarn is fine #2 yarn held doubled, which would be equivalent to a single strand of medium weight 4 yarn. That is why I put both. Hope this clarifies things!
In the increase rows i had to add a sc 28, 29, 30, 31, as we increased in each row otherwise it wouldn't look right. Did this happen for anyone else?
Hi, sorry to hear that! Let me try to figure this out. There's already a "sc 28, 29, 30, 31" in the increase rounds at the end. It's done twice during each round because it makes up the two long lengths of the cylinder. If you see the instructions below, they're already embedded. Could it be that you overlooked that part of the instruction?
R1: Insert 2 sc in the 2nd ch from the hook. Sc 28. Insert 3 sc in next st, bringing you to the other side of the chain. Sc 29.
Tip: place a stitch marker at the start of each round to keep track of your rounds.
R2: Inc 2, sc 28, inc 3, sc 28. In the last st: inc.
R3: (Sc, inc) x 2, sc 28, (sc, inc) x 3, sc 28. In the last 2 sts: sc, inc.
R4: (Sc 2, inc) x 2, sc 28, (sc 2, inc) x 3, sc 28. In the last 3 sts: sc 2, inc. R5: (Sc 3, inc) x 2, sc 28, (sc 3, inc) x 3, sc 28. In the last 4 sts: sc 3, inc.
@@SweetSofties Im making a second one, it did not happen this time. I'm unsure what went wrong the last time. But it did not majorly affect the final look of the bag. Except I used a 5.5mm hook so my bag actually ended up being 30cm long
@@dylanm1325 I see! Sorry it didn’t work out the first time but I hope you’re liking your second bag!! 😁 sounds like it’s bigger than expected. Hope that’s a good thing, more roomy!
How many yards did you use please?
I used 100% cotton worsted yarn (#4) and I for sure went through 1 skeen (190yds) and i think a foot from another skeen.
@@ahmeagibson5113 thank you so much, going to go look at the stash 😊
Sorry I didn't calculate yardage for this one! :( Looks like Ahmea had a very helpful answer though!
Thanks for sharing your yardage!
How much yarn did you use to make the bag?
I didn't keep track of yardage, sorry!! :(
Wicked hard to follow the increases. Wish she would slow down and be more deliberate and clear with what's a single crochet" vs "an increase".
Hi, I would like to join this profession, how should I start?
By learning to crochet! ☺️
How much yarn was used for this project?
I used this fine #2 yarn (hobbii.mvk.co/2h8v3) held doubled. I didn't track the yardage but I'd say I only scratched perhaps 25-30% of both skeins.
Roughly how much yarn did this take to make?
I didn't calculate it, but I think it's maybe around 400 total yards of weight 3 yarn (which I held doubled)...?
Are you crocheting in spiral?
Yes, you're still working in continuous rounds with this one!
how much yarn did u used? I have like 100 gr of #4 yarn and I was wodering if that would be enough😊
Hi!! Sorry for my delay in getting back to coments. I would say you would need more to be safe because you're using medium weight #4 yarn (I'm using #3 yarn doubled). It would work up faster if you get another medium weight yarn and hold it doubled for this pattern! It'll also ensure that your bag isn't too small. Hope this helps!
So the short strap is not 12cm?
The short strap is 12cm. :)
I cannot understand the instructions in yarn caused the yarn in our country, philippines, don't have any instructions like what number is the yarn and hook to use.
Hi, sorry about that! It's DK weight "3" yarn...not sure how to translate that to yarn in your country, but I hope that this chart may help? www.thesprucecrafts.com/understanding-yarn-weights-2117311

The pattern is free if you scroll down to the "crochet instructions" section :)
i can't avoid that at some point, all of my rows end up looking the same, this pattern is literally insufferable to me. It's a shame because i literally love this stitch
I'm sorry you feel that way. I don't know what to say; from a glance the Mosu Bag's stitch is repetitive and you can see that the rows look the same. I'm sorry you saw that and chose to work on this project anyway and had a bad time! Hope you can enjoy a different crochet project.

@@SweetSofties 👍🥰🙏
Definitely your use of crochet terms and directions are confusing. I love the tutorial style. You could give us a count of stitches at the end of each round. How you describe an increase. Huh? Please some clarity. I am a fan instantly butwhat do you mean by increase last 4 stitches ? 2 stitches in each stitch or sc nxt 3 and the 2sc in nxt??? I tried to look at your project but i am guessing.
Hi! Are you referring to the last part of R5, which is: "In the last 4 sts: sc 3, inc."?
If so, it means that you will single crochet in each of the next 3 sts, and then in the very last stitch, you will increase by inserting 2 sc in the same st.
My terminology for increase is to insert 2 single crochets in the same st. Hope this helps!!
I agree. I love this bag, I have the written pattern, but had to actually watch the video to get some clarity. I had to go back a few times to watch how to increase. Like I said this is a great little bag, but a bit confusing.
@@SweetSofties hi! Love the pattern, but I’m also trying to clarify this instruction. If I’m understanding right, you’re simply saying to increase in the last stitch of the row of 28. Why not simply say that? The way it’s written, I feel like I’m doing something wrong for simply crocheting the row of 28 normally, then increasing in the last stitch, as that’s what it sounds like you’re saying in your reply to the original commenter. Am I misunderstanding? Thank you!
@@MsjankenYou should be doing more than 28sc before inc. The pattern separates each round into 5 sections: there are two “sides” of 28st each; there are also two “corners”, created by working additional stitches into each end of the starting chain, one of these corners is broken into two sections.
The pattern is written as follows-
1. work required Corner A stitches,
2. work 28st to form the first side,
3. work required Corner B stitches,
4. work 28st to form the opposite side,
5. work remaining Corner A stitches.
In more conventional terminology, R5 would read: (3sc, inc) 2 times, 31sc, inc, (3sc, inc) 2 times, 31sc, inc [86st]
Ch 31.
R1. Starting from the second ch from the hook, inc; 28sc; insert 3sc into the final chain, turning the chain, continue working along the opposite side of the chain; 29sc [62st]
R2. 2 inc, 28sc, 3 inc, 28sc, inc [68st]

This was so frustrating-- I was so excited to make this bag, however it was very difficult to follow along.
Love that bag, but the tutorial is not clear at all.
Sorry to hear that! Can you tell me what part of the tutorial isn't clear? I'd love to improve on it for my future tutorials.
I’ve been crocheting for years. This is the worst tutorial.
Sorry you didn't like it! Is there any specific feedback you can share, such as a part of this pattern that made it the worst tutorial, so I can improve next time?
Love that bag, but the tutorial is not clear at all.
I'm not sure what are you saying , obviously you don't know how to crochet. She is clear enough.
