What is indulgence?
In religious terms, an indulgence is the remission of the temporal punishment for sins that have already been forgiven. In the Catholic Church, an indulgence is believed to be granted by the Church through the merits of Jesus Christ, the Blessed Virgin Mary, and the saints. It is important to understand that an indulgence does not forgive the sins themselves but rather releases the individual from the temporal consequences or punishments that may remain even after the sins have been forgiven through the sacrament of confession.
The concept of indulgence is rooted in the belief that God's justice requires a temporal punishment for sins committed, and this punishment can extend beyond the eternal consequences of sin. Indulgences are seen as an expression of God's mercy, allowing believers to receive spiritual benefits and help in their journey towards holiness.
To obtain an indulgence, specific conditions must be met, which often include performing certain prayers, acts of penance, or charitable works as directed by the Church. There are two types of indulgences: partial indulgences, which remit only a portion of the temporal punishment, and plenary indulgences, which grant full remission of the temporal punishment.
The Catholic Church's teachings on indulgences have evolved over time, and today, indulgences are typically associated with specific devotional practices, pilgrimages to holy places, or participation in designated religious events.
